Nitrogen Fixation by Manganese Complexes - Waiting for the Rush?

Manganese is currently experiencing a great deal of attention in homogeneous catalysis as a sustainable alternative to platinum group metals due to its abundance, affordable price and low toxicity. While homogeneous nitrogen fixation employing well-defined transition metal complexes has been an important part of coordination chemistry, manganese derivatives have been only sporadically used in this research area. In this contribution, the authors systematically cover manganese organometallic chemistry related to N2 activation spanning almost 60 years, identify apparent pitfalls and outline encouraging perspectives for its future development.

Oxidation-induced ambiphilicity triggers N-N bond formation and dinitrogen release in octahedral terminal molybdenum(v) nitrido complexes

Coupling of octahedral, terminal d1 molybdenum(v) nitrido complexes supported by a dianionic pentadentate ligand via N-N bond formation to give μ-dinitrogen complexes was found to be thermodynamically feasible but faces significant kinetic barriers. However, upon oxidation, a kinetically favored nucleophilic/electrophilic N-N bond forming mechanism was enabled to give monocationic μ-dinitrogen dimers. Computational and experimental evidence for this "oxidation-induced ambiphilic nitrido coupling" mechanism is presented. The factors influencing release of dinitrogen from the resulting μ-dinitrogen dimers were also probed and it was found that further oxidation to a dicationic species is required to induce (very rapid) loss of dinitrogen. The mechanistic path discovered for N-N bond formation and dinitrogen release follows an ECECC sequence (E = "electrochemical step"; C = "chemical step"). Experimental evidence for the intermediacy of a highly electrophilic, cationic d0 molybdenum(vi) nitrido in the N-N bond forming mechanism via trapping with an isonitrile reagent is also discussed. Together these results are relevant to the development of molecular catalysts capable of mediating ammonia oxidation to dihydrogen and dinitrogen.

Heavy metalla vinyl-cations show metal-Lewis acid cooperativity in reaction with small molecules (NH3, N2H4, H2O, H2)

Halide abstraction from tetrylidene complexes [TbbE(Br)IrH(PMe₃)₃] [E = Ge (1), Sn (2)] and [Ar*E(Cl)IrH(PMe₃)₃] gives the salts [TbbEIrH(PMe₃)₃][BAr^F ₄] [E = Ge (3), Sn (4)] and [Ar*EIrH(PMe₃)₃][BAr^F ₄] [E = Ge (3'), E = Sn (4')] (Tbb = 2,6-[CH(SiMe₃)₂]₂-4-(t-Bu)C₆H₂, Ar* = 2,6-Trip₂C₆H₃, Trip = 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl). Bonding analysis suggests their most suitable description as metalla-tetrela vinyl cations with an Ir[double bond, length as m-dash]E double bond and a near linear coordination at the Ge/Sn atoms. Cationic complexes 3 and 4 oxidatively add NH₃, N₂H₄, H₂O, HCl, and H₂ selectively to give: [TbbGe(NH₂)IrH₂(PMe₃)₃][BAr^F ₄] (5), [TbbE(NHNH₂)IrH₂(PMe₃)₃][BAr^F ₄] [E = Ge (7), Sn (8)], [TbbE(OH)IrH₂(PMe₃)₃][BAr^F ₄] [E = Ge (9), Sn (10)], [TbbE(Cl)IrH₂(PMe₃)₃][BAr^F ₄] [E = Ge (11a), Sn (12a)], [TbbGe(H)IrH₂(PMe₃)₃][BAr^F ₄] (13), [TbbSn(μ-H₃)Ir(PMe₃)₃][BAr^F ₄] (14), and [TbbSn(H)IrH₂(PMe₃)₃][BAr^F ₄] (15). 14 isomerizes to give 15via an 1,2-H shift reaction. Hydride addition to cation 3 gives a mixture of products [TbbGeHIrH(PMe₃)₃] (16) and [TbbGeIrH₂(PMe₃)₃] (17) and a reversible 1,2-H shift between 16 and 17 was studied. In the tin case 4 the dihydride [TbbSnIrH₂(PMe₃)₃] (18) was isolated exclusively. The PMe₃ and PEt₃ derivatives, 18 and [TbbSnIrH₂(PEt₃)₃] (19), respectively, could also be synthesized in reaction of [TbbSnH₂]^- with the respective chloride [(R₃P) _n IrCl] (R = Me, n = 4; R = Et, n = 3). Reaction of complex 19 with CO gives the substitution product [TbbSnIrH₂(CO)(PEt₃)₂] (20). Further reaction with CO results in hydrogen transfer from the iridium to the tin atom to give [TbbSnH₂Ir(CO)₂(PEt₃)₂] (21). The reversibility of this ligand induced reductive elimination transferring 20 to 21 is shown.

Facile Addition of B-H and B-B Bonds to an Iron(IV) Nitride Complex

The nitride ligand in the iron(IV) complex PhB(ⁱPr₂Im)₃Fe≡N reacts with boron hydrides to afford PhB(ⁱPr₂Im)₃FeN(B)H (B = 9-BBN (1), Bpin (2)) and with (Bpin)₂ to afford PhB(ⁱPr₂Im)₃FeN(Bpin)₂ (3). The iron(II) borylamido products have all been structurally and spectroscopically characterized, demonstrating facile insertion into B-H and B-B bonds by PhB(ⁱPr₂Im)₃Fe≡N. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the quintet state (S = 2) is significantly lower in energy than the singlet (S = 0) and triplet (S = 1) states for all products. Stoichiometric reaction with (Bpin)₂ does not produce the mono-borylated iron imido species PhB(ⁱPr₂Im)₃FeN(Bpin). DFT calculations suggest that this is because PhB(ⁱPr₂Im)₃FeN(Bpin) is unstable toward disproportionation to the starting iron(IV) nitride and PhB(ⁱPr₂Im)₃FeN(Bpin)₂. Attempts at B-C bond insertion using phenyl- and benzyl-pinacol borane were unsuccessful, which we attribute to unfavorable kinetics.

Hydrogen Atom Abstraction from an OsII(NH3)2 Complex Generates an OsIV(NH2)2 Complex: Experimental and Computational Analysis of the N-H Bond Dissociation Free Energies and Reactivity

Double hydrogen atom abstraction from (TMP)Os^II(NH₃)₂ (TMP = tetramesitylporphyrin) with phenoxyl or nitroxyl radicals leads to (TMP)Os^IV(NH₂)₂. This unusual bis(amide) complex is diamagnetic and displays an N-H resonance at 12.0 ppm in its ¹H NMR spectrum. ¹H-¹⁵N correlation experiments identified a ¹⁵N NMR spectroscopic resonance signal at -267 ppm. Experimental reactivity studies and density functional theory calculations support relatively weak N-H bonds of 73.3 kcal/mol for (TMP)Os^II(NH₃)₂ and 74.2 kcal/mol for (TMP)Os^III(NH₃)(NH₂). Cyclic voltammetry experiments provide an estimate of the pK_a of [(TMP)Os^III(NH₃)₂]⁺. In the presence of Barton's base, a current enhancement is observed at the Os(III/II) couple, consistent with an ECE event. Spectroscopic experiments confirmed (TMP)Os^IV(NH₂)₂ as the product of bulk electrolysis. Double hydrogen atom abstraction is influenced by π donation from the amides of (TMP)Os^IV(NH₂)₂ into the d orbitals of the Os center, favoring the formation of (TMP)Os^IV(NH₂)₂ over N-N coupling. This π donation leads to a Jahn-Teller distortion that splits the energy levels of the d_xz and d_yz orbitals of Os, results in a low-spin electron configuration, and leads to minimal aminyl character on the N atoms, rendering (TMP)Os^IV(NH₂)₂ unreactive toward amide-amide coupling.

Photoelectrochemical Conversion of Dinitrogen to Benzonitrile: Selectivity Control by Electrophile‐ versus Proton‐Coupled Electron Transfer

Nitride complexes are key species in homogeneous nitrogen fixation to NH₃ via stepwise proton‐coupled electron transfer (PCET). In contrast, direct generation of nitrogenous organic products from N₂‐derived nitrides requires new strategies to enable efficient reductive nitride transfer in the presence of organic electrophiles. We here present a 2‐step protocol for the conversion of dinitrogen to benzonitrile. Photoelectrochemical, reductive N₂ splitting produces a rhenium(V) nitride with unfavorable PCET thermochemistry towards ammonia generation. However, N‐benzoylation stabilizes subsequent reduction as a basis for selective nitrogen transfer in the presence of the organic electrophile and Brønsted acid at mild reduction potentials. This work offers a new strategy for photoelectrosynthetic nitrogen fixation beyond ammonia—to yield nitrogenous organic products.

Spontaneous Ammonia Activation Through Coordination-Induced Bond Weakening in Molybdenum Complexes of a Dianionic Pentadentate Ligand Platform

Ammonia oxidation catalyzed by molecular compounds is of current interest as a carbon-free source of dihydrogen. Activation of N-H bonds through coordination to transition metal centers is a key reaction in this process. We report the substantial activation of ammonia via reaction with low-valent molybdenum complexes of a diborate pentadentate ligand system. Spontaneous loss of dihydrogen from (B₂ Pz₄ Py)Mo^II -NH₃ at room temperature to produce the dinuclear μ-nitrido compound (B₂ Pz₄ Py)Mo-N-Mo(B₂ Pz₄ Py) is observed due to substantial N-H bond weakening upon coordination to Mo. Mechanistic details are supported through the experimental observation/characterization of terminal amido, imido and nitrido complexes and density functional theory computations. The generally under-appreciated role of bridging nitrido intermediates is revealed and discussed, providing guidance for further catalyst development for this process.
