Palladium-catalyzed carboxylative cyclization of propargylic amines with aryl iodides, CO2 and CO under ambient pressure

A six-membered N-heterocyclic polyionic liquids with palladium nanoparticles as a heterogeneous catalyst for the multicomponent one-pot reaction of carbon dioxide

A series of heterogeneous catalysts, designated as POP-n-Pd (where n = 1, 2, 3, or 4), were synthesized by polymerizing a six-membered N-heterocyclic compound with an alkyl substituted group monomer (S1), using divinylbenzene (DVB) as crosslinkers. This process was followed by the incorporation of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles. The impact of the substituted group and the S1:DVB ratio in the catalysts, together with the reaction conditions, was investigated to assess their influence on the catalytic performance in converting propylamine, carbon dioxide (CO2) and 4-iodoanisole to oxazolidinones. The POP-1-Pd catalyst, featuring a methyl substituted group and a S1:DVB ratio of 1:4, exhibited remarkable efficiency, resulting in an excellent yield of 96 % under room temperature and ambient pressure conditions. Furthermore, it has demonstrated wide applicability across a variety of substrates and in the treatment of lime kiln exhaust gas. Additionally, POP-1-Pd can be used in a gram-scale reaction and maintains its performance after six recycles, with no significant decline in yield. The possible catalytic mechanism is proposed as follows: the catalyst's pores adsorb both CO2 and substrates, creating a high concentration reactant enrichment microenvironment. This facilitates the activation of both CO2 and substrates by the imidazole moiety and Pd nanoparticles in the catalyst, thereby generating oxazolidinones.

Base-mediated carboxylation of C-nucleophiles with CO2

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an available, abundant, and renewable C1 resource, which could be converted into value-added chemicals. Due to its inherent thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness, it is difficult to realize its efficient utilization. Nevertheless, many elegant strategies for the utilization of CO2 have been developed using Lewis bases, frustrated Lewis pairs, hydroxyl-containing compounds, amino-group-containing compounds or transition metal catalysis. Among them, base-mediated carboxylation of C-nucleophiles is an environmentally friendly strategy for CO2 conversion, which is operationally simple, using low-toxicity bases and economical available promoters, without the use of complex ligands or cocatalysts. This review summarizes related work on the base-mediated carboxylation of C-nucleophiles with CO2, based on the effects of nucleophiles, promoters, additives, and solvents. The types of pronucleophile are categorized as follows: hydrocarbon with C(sp3)-H, C(sp2)-H or C(sp)-H bonds, organosilanes, organotin, organoboron, and N-tosylhydrazones. Typical mechanisms and applications of these carboxylation reactions are also depicted. Moreover, mechanistic comprehension of CO2 activation and conversion at a molecular level aims to further expand the repertoire of carboxylation transformations mediated by bases.

Iron-Mediated C-H Functionalization of Unactivated Alkynes for the Synthesis of Derivatized Dihydropyrrolones: Regioselectivity Under Thermodynamic Control

Cyclopentadienyliron dicarbonyl-based complexes present opportunities for underexplored disconnections in synthesis. Access to challenging dihydropyrrolone products is achieved by propargylic C-H functionalization of alkynes for the formation of cyclic organoiron species. Excellent regioselectivity for unsymmetrical alkynes is observed in many cases. Notably, regioselectivity under these stoichiometric conditions diverges from those observed previously under catalysis, occurring at the more-substituted terminus of the alkyne, allowing for methine functionalization and the formation of quaternary centers. Divergent demetallation of the intermediate organoiron complexes gives access to chemically diverse products which are amenable to further functionalization.

Advancements and Challenges in Reductive Conversion of Carbon Dioxide via Thermo-/Photocatalysis

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is the major greenhouse gas and also an abundant and renewable carbon resource. Therefore, its chemical conversion and utilization are of great attraction for sustainable development. Especially, reductive conversion of CO₂ with energy input has become a current hotspot due to its ability to access fuels and various important chemicals. Nowadays, the controllable CO₂ hydrogenation to formic acid and alcohols using sustainable H₂ resources has been regarded as an appealing solution to hydrogen storage and CO₂ accumulation. In addition, photocatalytic CO₂ reduction to CO also provides a potential way to utilize this greenhouse gas efficiently. Besides direct CO₂ hydrogenation, CO₂ reductive functionalization integrates CO₂ reduction with subsequent C-X (X = N, S, C, O) bond formation and indirect transformation strategies, enlarging the diverse products derived from CO₂ and promoting CO₂ reductive conversion into a new stage. In this Perspective, the progress and challenges of CO₂ reductive conversion, including hydrogenation, reductive functionalization, photocatalytic reduction, and photocatalytic reductive functionalization are summarized and discussed along with the key issues and future trends/directions in this field. We hope this Perspective can evoke intense interest and inspire much innovation in the promise of CO₂ valorization.
