Understanding enhanced rotational dynamics of active probes in rod suspensions

Enhanced rotational diffusion and spontaneous rotation of an active Janus disk in a complex fluid

Active colloids and self-propelled particles moving through microstructured fluids can display different behavior compared to what is observed in simple fluids. As they are driven out of equilibrium in complex fluids they can experience enhanced translational and rotational diffusion as well as instabilities. In this work, we study the deterministic and the Brownian rotational dynamics of an active Janus disk propelling at a constant speed through a complex fluid. The interactions between the Janus disk and the complex fluid are modeled using a fluctuating advection-diffusion equation, which we solve using the finite element method. Motivated by experiments, we focus on the case of a complex fluid comprising molecules that are much smaller than the size of the active disk but much bigger than the solvent. Using numerical simulations, we elucidate the interplay between active motion and fluid microstructure that leads to enhanced rotational diffusion and spontaneous rotation observed in experiments employing Janus colloids in polymer solutions. By increasing the propulsion speed of the Janus disk, the simulations predict the onset of a spontaneous rotation and an increase of the rotational diffusion coefficient by orders of magnitude compared to its equilibrium value. These phenomena depend strongly on the number density of the constituents of the complex fluid and their interactions with the two sides of the Janus disk. Given the simplicity of our model, we expect that our findings will apply to a wide range of active systems propelling through complex media.

Anomalous diffusion of active Brownian particles in responsive elastic gels: Nonergodicity, non-Gaussianity, and distributions of trapping times

Understanding actual transport mechanisms of self-propelled particles (SPPs) in complex elastic gels-such as in the cell cytoplasm, in in vitro networks of chromatin or of F-actin fibers, or in mucus gels-has far-reaching consequences. Implications beyond biology/biophysics are in engineering and medicine, with a particular focus on microrheology and on targeted drug delivery. Here, we examine via extensive computer simulations the dynamics of SPPs in deformable gellike structures responsive to thermal fluctuations. We treat tracer particles comparable to and larger than the mesh size of the gel. We observe distinct trapping events of active tracers at relatively short times, leading to subdiffusion; it is followed by an escape from meshwork-induced traps due to the flexibility of the network, resulting in superdiffusion. We thus find crossovers between different transport regimes. We also find pronounced nonergodicity in the dynamics of SPPs and non-Gaussianity at intermediate times. The distributions of trapping times of the tracers escaping from "cages" in our quasiperiodic gel often reveal the existence of two distinct timescales in the dynamics. At high activity of the tracers these timescales become comparable. Furthermore, we find that the mean waiting time exhibits a power-law dependence on the activity of SPPs (in terms of their Péclet number). Our results additionally showcase both exponential and nonexponential trapping events at high activities. Extensions of this setup are possible, with the factors such as anisotropy of the particles, different topologies of the gel network, and various interactions between the particles (also of a nonlocal nature) to be considered.

Capture and transport of rod-shaped cargo via programmable active particles

We study the influence of the cargo shape on the capture and transport process of colloidal rods via swarms of active particles using Brownian dynamics simulations. Starting at random initial conditions, active particles that interact via the Lennard-Jones potential and possess a tuneable speed are utilised to capture passive rods inside a hexagonal cage of individually addressable units. By adjusting the velocity of the individual active particles, the rod can then be transported. To guarantee a successful capture process (with a strong localisation), we find that specific geometric and energetic constraints have to be met; i.e., the length of the rod must approximately be in the vicinity of an odd multiple of the lattice constant of the hexagonal cage, and the Lennard-Jones interaction strength must be in the range of [Formula: see text] to [Formula: see text]. If the cargo aspect ratio gets too large, the subsequent transport of successfully captured rods can fail. For systems where transport is possible, an increase in the cargo aspect ratio decreases the achievable transport velocity. Our work shows that the particle shape must be considered while designing interaction rules to accomplish specific tasks via groups of controllable units.

Dynamics of Active SiO2-Pt Janus Colloids in Dilute Poly(ethylene oxide) Solutions

Self-propelled Janus colloids (JCs) have recently gained much attention due to their ability to move autonomously and mimic biological microswimmers. This ability makes them suitable for prospective drug/cargo-delivery applications in microscopic domains. Understanding their dynamics in surroundings doped with macromolecules such as polymers is crucial, as most of the target application media are complex in nature. In this study, we investigate the self-diffusiophoretic motion of hydrogen peroxide-fuelled SiO₂-Pt JCs in the presence of dilute amounts of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). Despite the addition of PEO chains producing a Newtonian behavior with negligible increase in viscosity, the ballistic movement and rotational fluctuations of active JCs are observed to be significantly suppressed. With an increase in the polymer concentration, this leads to a transition from smooth to jittery to cage-hopping to the arrested motion of active JCs. We further propose that the anisotropic interaction of the polymers with the JC increases the "local drag" of the medium, resulting in the unusual impediment of the active motion.

Dynamics of self-propelled tracer particles inside a polymer network

The transport of tracer particles through mesh-like environments such as biological hydrogels and polymer matrices is ubiquitous in nature. These tracers can be passive, such as colloids, or active (self-propelled), for example, synthetic nanomotors or bacteria. Computer simulations in principle could be extremely useful in exploring the mechanism of the active transport of tracer particles through mesh-like environments. Therefore, we construct a polymer network on a diamond lattice and use computer simulations to investigate the dynamics of spherical self-propelled particles inside the network. Our main objective is to elucidate the effect of the self-propulsion on the tracer particle dynamics as a function of the tracer size and the stiffness of the polymer network. We compute the time-averaged mean-squared displacement (MSD) and the van-Hove correlations of the tracer. On the one hand, in the case of a bigger sticky particle, the caging caused by the network particles wins over the escape assisted by the self-propulsion. This results an intermediate-time subdiffusion. On the other hand, smaller tracers or tracers with high self-propulsion velocities can easily escape from the cages and show intermediate-time superdiffusion. The stiffer the network, the slower the dynamics of the tracer, and bigger tracers exhibit longer lived intermediate time superdiffusion, since the persistence time scales as ∼σ³, where σ is the diameter of the tracer. At the intermediate time, non-Gaussianity is more pronounced for active tracers. At the long time, the dynamics of the tracer, if passive or weakly active, becomes Gaussian and diffusive, but remains flat for tracers with high self-propulsion, accounting for their seemingly unrestricted motion inside the network.
