Passive probe particle in an active bath: can we tell it is out of equilibrium?

The fluctuation-dissipation relation holds for a macroscopic tracer in an active bath

The fluctuation-dissipation relation (FDR) links thermal fluctuations and dissipation at thermal equilibrium through temperature. Extending it beyond equilibrium conditions in pursuit of broadening thermodynamics is often feasible, albeit with system-dependent specific conditions. We demonstrate experimentally that a generalized FDR holds for a harmonically trapped tracer colliding with self-propelled walkers. The generalized FDR remains valid across a large spectrum of active fluctuation frequencies, extending from underdamped to critically damped dynamics, which we attribute to a single primary channel for energy input and dissipation in our system.

Shape-dependent motility of polar inclusions in active baths

Collections of persistently moving active particles are an example of a nonequilibrium heat bath. One way to study the nature of nonequilibrium fluctuations in such systems is to follow the dynamics of an embedded probe particle. With this aim, we study the dynamics of an anisotropic inclusion embedded in a bath of active particles. By studying various statistical correlation functions of the dynamics, we show that the emergent motility of this inclusion depends on its shape as well as the properties of the active bath. We demonstrate that both the decorrelation time of the net force on the inclusion and the dwell time of bath particles in a geometrical trap on the inclusion have a nonmonotonic dependence on its shape. We also find that the motility of the inclusion is optimal when the volume fraction of the active bath is close to the value for the onset of motility induced phase separation.

A passive star polymer in a dense active bath: insights from computer simulations

Using computer simulations in two dimensions (2D), we explore the structure and dynamics of a star polymer with three arms made of passive monomers immersed in a bath of active Brownian particles (ABPs). We analyze the conformational and dynamical changes of the polymer as a function of activity and packing fraction. We also study the process of motility induced phase separation (MIPS) in the presence of a star polymer, which acts as a mobile nucleation center. The presence of the polymer increases the growth rate of the clusters in comparison to a bath without the polymer. In particular, for low packing fraction, both nucleation and cluster growth are affected by the inclusion of the star polymer. Clusters grow in the vicinity of the star polymer, resulting in the star polymer experiencing a caged motion similar to a tagged ABP in the dense phase. Due to the topological constraints of the star polymers and clustering nearby, the conformational changes of the star polymer lead to interesting observations. Inter alia, we observe the shrinking of the arm with increasing activity along with a short-lived hairpin structure of one arm formed. We also see the transient pairing of two arms of the star polymer, while the third is largely separated at high activity. We hope our findings will help in understanding the behavior of active-passive mixtures, including biopolymers of complex topology in dense active suspensions.

Force renormalization for probes immersed in an active bath

Langevin equations or generalized Langevin equations (GLEs) are popular models for describing the motion of a particle in a fluid medium in an effective manner. Here we examine particles immersed in an inherently nonequilibrium fluid, i.e., an active bath, which are subject to an external force. Specifically, we consider two types of forces that are highly relevant for microrheological studies: A harmonic, trapping force and a constant, "drag" force. We study such systems by molecular simulations and use the simulation data to extract an effective GLE description. We find that within this description, in an active bath, the external force in the GLE is not equal to the physical external force, but rather a renormalized external force, which can be significantly smaller. The effect cannot be attributed to the mere temperature renormalization, which is also observed.

Trapped tracer in a non-equilibrium bath: dynamics and energetics

We study the dynamics of a tracer that is elastically coupled to active particles being kept at two different temperatures, as a prototype of tracer dynamics in a non-equilibrium bath. Employing analytical techniques, we find the exact solution of the probability density function for the effective motion of the tracer. The analytical results are supported by numerical simulations. By combining the experimentally accessible quantities such as the response function and the power spectrum, we measure the non-equilibrium fluctuations in terms of the effective temperature. In addition, we compute the energy dissipation rate to find the precise effects of activity. Our study is relevant in understanding athermal fluctuations arising in cytoskeletal networks or inside a chromosome.

Comparison of translational and rotational modes towards passive rheology of the cytoplasm of MCF-7 cells using optical tweezers

A colloidal particle placed inside the cell cytoplasm is enmeshed within a network of cytoskeletal fibres immersed in the cytosolic fluid. The translational mode is believed to yield different rheological parameters than the rotational mode, given that these modes stretch the fibers differently. We compare the parameters for Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 (MCF-7) cells in this manuscript and find that the results are well comparable to each other. At low values of 0 Hz viscosity, the rotational and translational viscoelasticity matches well. However, discrepancies appear at higher values which may indicate that the cytoskeletal modes involved in rotation and translation of the particle are getting invoked. We also show that the 0 Hz viscosity increases as the cell ages under the conditions of constant room temperature of 25°C on the sample chamber.
