Dynamic and sustainable supramolecular biolubrication coatings through nanoarchitectonics with dynamic BN bonding

Biological lubricating materials play a crucial role in normal human activities due to their extremely low coefficients of friction (COFs). However, synthetic friction materials typically exhibit higher friction coefficients and wear rates compared to natural lubricating materials. To address this issue, we propose a novel lubrication strategy: reducing the friction coefficient of synthetic lubricating materials through supramolecular dynamic exchange. The incorporation of B-N supramolecular dynamic bonds enhances the stability of the polymer network structure, resulting in superior mechanical properties and resilience. The dynamic behavior of B-N bonds during friction reduces the frictional resistance of mechanical interlocking networks in motion, thereby significantly improving the frictional performance of supramolecular coatings. We anticipate that elucidating the dynamic structure-performance relationship in supramolecular coatings will advance the development of supramolecular lubricating materials and inspire innovative approaches to constructing new lubricating materials.

Tough and Self-Healing Waterborne Polyurethane Elastomers via Dynamic Hydrogen Bonds Design for Flexible Conductive Substrate Applications

Balancing the mechanical strength and self-healing performance of polyurethane (PU) remains a significant challenge in achieving excellent self-repairing PU materials. In this study, a self-healing waterborne PU elastomer was designed from a bionic concept by incorporating 2'-deoxythymidine (2'-dT) and isophorone diamine (IPDA) into the polymer chain. The loose stacking of IPDA's irregular cycloaliphatic structure resulted in the irregular arrangement of urethane bonds in the hard domain. The formation of sextuple hydrogen bonds between 2'-dT and urethane bonds, as well as quadruple hydrogen bonds between urethane bonds themselves, enhanced the mechanical properties of the material. The multiple hydrogen bonds can dissociate, recombine, and dissipate energy, thereby improving the material's repair capability. The hierarchical self-assembly of hydrogen bonds enabled the PU to achieve a tensile strength of 15.3 MPa and toughness of 100.75 MJ/m3. The prepared PU film is highly transparent and has a transmittance of more than 90%. Additionally, it can undergo rapid repair under high temperatures or under trace solvent conditions. When used as a flexible conductive substrate, it quickly restored the conductivity and enhanced the material's lifespan after surface damage. This environmentally friendly and self-healing waterborne PU elastomer will hold broad application prospects in the field of flexible electronic devices.

Solvent-Free Environmentally Friendly Method to Prepare Thermo-Reversible Fully Bio-Based Elastomers

Most rubber products come from petrochemical resources, which are increasingly in short supply. Rubber products that formed irreversible chemical bonds in the vulcanization process are difficult to recycle, resulting in a serious waste of resources. Therefore, it is important to prepare a kind of reprocessable biobased elastomers. Using furfuryl methacrylate (FMA) as the modified monomer, poly(dibutyl itaconate-myrcene-furfuryl methacrylate) (PDBIMFA) was synthesized by high-temperature emulsion polymerization successfully. The structure and compositions of PDBIMFA were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and 1H NMR, and the effects of different FMA contents on the structures and properties of PDBIMFA were systematically studied. Based on the Diels-Alder reaction, bismaleimide (BMI) and carbon black (CB) were introduced into PDBIMFA as cross-linking agents and reinforcing fillers, respectively, by the melt blending method, and PDBIMFA-BMI elastomer materials and CB/PDBIMFA-BMI elastomer composites with thermo-reversible cross-linking characteristics were prepared. The effects of the ratio of FMA and BMI on the mechanical properties of PDBIMFA-BMI were studied. PDBIMFA-BMI and CB/PDBIMFA-BMI were reprocessed twice, and the recovery rate of tensile strength was both more than 90%. The addition of CB was found to play a reinforcing role in the elastomer and with the introduction of the amount of CB, the reprocessability of composite remained at a good level. It is hoped that this research will provide a new strategy for the sustainable development of bio-based elastomer materials.
