A collaborative manipulation strategy of proper heat treatment and self-customized hydrofluoroether-based electrolyte design has been proposed for boosting the sodium-ion storage kinetics of Prussian white cathodes. Improved monoclinic phase stability and electrolyte-cathode compatibility are responsible for an impressive discharge capacity of 148.4 mA h g-1 and excellent electrode reversibility.

The innovative design of high-performance layered transition metal oxides for sodium-ion batteries from a commercial perspective

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), which have ample reserves and low production costs, are receiving more and more attention. As promising cathode candidates, layered transition metal oxides (LTMOs) have attracted intensive interest for their nontoxicity, high theoretical capacities, ease of manufacture, suitable voltage, abundant resources, and potential low cost. However, the commercial implementation of LTMOs is still hampered by their low rate capability, low energy density, insufficient cycling stability, and air instability. Therefore, this review comprehensively summarizes the research progress and modification strategies for LTMOs to enhance the stability of SIBs from microscopic heterostructure regulation to macroscale interface engineering modification. With the aim of realizing commercial applications of SIBs, more attention and research for improving the coulombic efficiency of LTMOS and close communication between academic and industrial organizations are also needed. It is expected that we will be able to provide unique perspectives for the design of powerful LTMOs in SIBs and guide the development of commercial application.

Buffer solution induced highly crystalline sodium-rich Prussian blue for sodium storage

In this work, we have developed an efficient method to synthesize Prussian blue by self-decomposition of sodium ferrocyanide in acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer solution. This buffer solution-based proton pool provides a relatively low and stable concentration of protons for the slow decomposition of sodium ferrocyanide to get highly crystalline and sodium rich Prussian blue, which can be used as the cathode for high-performance sodium-ion batteries.

Fabrication of NiMn2O4/C hollow spheres with a trilaminar shell structure as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries

NiMn2O4/C hollow spheres with sandwich-structured shells were fabricated by a hydrothermal method. Leveraging the mesoporous design of the carbon hollow spheres, NiMn2O4 nanosheets were evenly dispersed on both the inner and outer surfaces of the carbon shells. NiMn2O4/C demonstrated excellent rate capability and prolonged cycling durability for sodium ion storage.
