Abstract
Treatment of unsubstituted and substituted phthalonitrile (1a-d) with appropriate equivalents of sodium methoxide and ammonia afforded the corresponding 1,3-diiminoisoindolines (2a-d), which were converted to cobalt(III)-containing penta-dentate "helmet"-type phthalogens (3a-d) by the reaction with CoCl2·6H2O as templating agent in the inert solvent 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. The identities of 2a-d and 3a-d were established by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). A computational study was performed to determine the most stable tautomeric form of 2a-c in the gas phase. The solid-state structures of 2b and 2c were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) studies to confirm their existence in the stereoisomeric anti-form, which is aligned with quantum chemical computations. SC-XRD studies of 3a and 3b revealed a slightly distorted octahedral geometry around the CoIII ions which are coordinated by five N-donor atoms and one extra co-ligand, resulting in a coordination environment of CoN5Cl (3a) and CoN5O (3b), respectively. The thermal stabilities of 2a-d and 3a-d were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in the temperature range of 40-500 °C and 40-800 °C, respectively, revealing that 3a-d were converted to the parent cobalt(II)-containing phthalocyanines (4a-d), which was verified independently by furnace heating experiments. Moreover, the electrochemical behavior of 3a was studied exemplarily for the phthalogens by cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. This study showed that 4a (CoPc) is formed irreversibly by reducing 3a electrochemically.

Abstract
Reversible nucleophilic addition to a phthalocyanine core was observed for the first time for the electron-deficient cationic phosphorus(V) complex [PcP(OMe)2]+, whose reaction with KOH afforded a highly distorted nonaromatic adduct bearing an OH group at one of the α-pyrrolic carbon atoms. This adduct was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, ESI HRMS, and NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy, together with quantum-chemical modeling. The acidic treatment of this adduct restored aromaticity and recovered the starting cationic complex. The reversible aromaticity breakage resulted in dramatic changes in the photophysical properties of the studied complex, which could pave the way to novel switchable Pc-based compounds and materials.

Abstract
We report the results of theoretical calculations on the optimized structures and relative energies between the D4d and D2 symmetry structures for double-decker type phthalocyanine compounds, Ti(Pc)2, Ti(Pc)2(+), Sn(Pc)2, Sn(Pc)2(+), Sc(Pc)2 and Sc(Pc)2(+), using eighteen types of functionals: B3LYP, B3PW91, B3P86, PBE1PBE, BHandHLYP, BPW91, BP86, M06, M06-2x, M06-HF, M06L, LC-BPW91, LC-ωPBE, CAM-B3LYP, B97D, ωB97, ωB97X and ωB97XD. Two phthalocyanine moieties are stacked in a face-to-face configuration in the D4d structure, but they are stapled by two σ-bonds in the D2 one. We found that the molecular symmetry of M(Pc)2 and M(Pc)2(+) depends on the balance between stabilization due to electron delocalization and exchange repulsion of π-electrons in the phthalocyanine moieties. We assessed the performance of the well-established functionals to select the appropriate functional for calculations on M(Pc)2 and M(Pc)2(+), and several important aspects came out. Generally, the hybrid GGA and hybrid meta-GGA functionals with 20-27% of the HF exchange term would give the molecular structures consistent with the experimental expectations for the double-decker type phthalocyanine compounds. Pure GGA and pure meta-GGA functionals (BPW91, BP86, M06L and B97D) have the tendency to overestimate the stability of the D4d structure. On the other hand, functionals including HF exchange for 50% and over or including long-range corrections (BHandHLYP, M06, M06-2x, M06-HF, LC-BPW91, LC-ωPBE, CAM-B3LYP, ωB97, ωB97X and ωB97XD) tend to overestimate the stability of the D2 structure. It should be emphasized that the B3LYP functional, one of the most commonly used hybrid GGA functionals with 20% HF exchange, cannot estimate the relative stability between the two molecular structures of Ti(Pc)2 appropriately. The calculation for the systems considered in this article required well-balanced treatment of the HF exchange with the accompanied exchange-correlation functional. Thus, as has been pointed out rigorously and frequently, the selection of the functional is a crucial point for reliability of the calculations.

Abstract
This review presents studies devoted to the description and comprehension of phenomena connected with the sensing behaviour towards NO2 of films of two phthalocyanines, titanium bis-phthalocyanine and ruthenium phthalocyanine. Spectroscopic, conductometric, and morphological features recorded during exposure to the gas are explained and the mechanisms of gas-molecule interaction are also elucidated. The review also shows how X-ray reflectivity can be a useful tool for monitoring morphological parameters such as thickness and roughness that are demonstrated to be sensitive variables for monitoring the exposure of thin films of sensor materials to NO2 gas.

Abstract
Recrystallization of the previously reported monosolvated bis(phthalocyaninato)niobium(IV), [Pc2Nb].CINP (CINP = 1-chloronaphthalene), has allowed isolation of a single crystal of a new solvated form, i.e. [Pc2Nb]. 3.5CINP, whose structure has been elucidated by X-ray work: space group P2(1)/n (No. 14); a = 16.765(3), b = 23.800(4), c = 19.421(4) A; alpha = gamma = 90 degrees, beta = 92.51(2) degrees; Z = 4. The sandwiched material is a "stapled" molecule, characterized by the presence of two intramolecular interligand C-C sigma bonds and highly strained phthalocyanine units, as formerly observed by crystallographic work for its Ti(IV) analogue, [Pc2Ti], and the +1 corresponding fragment, [Pc2Nb]+, present in the species [Pc2Nb](l3)(l2)0.5.3.5CINP. [Pc2Nb] appears to be reluctant to undergo further oxidation above the +1 oxidation state. Detailed theoretical studies by DFT and TDDFT methods have been developed on [Pc2Nb] and [Pc2Nb]+, also extended for comparison to the Ti(IV) complex [Pc2Ti], and an adequate picture of the ground-state electronic structure of these species has been achieved. Moreover, the excitation energies and oscillator strengths calculated for the closed-shell systems, [Pc2Ti] and [Pc2Nb]+, provide a satisfactory interpretation of their characteristic visible optical spectra and help to rationalize the similar features observed in the visible spectrum of the open-shell "stapled" complex, [Pc2Nb]. Thin solid films (100-250 nm) of [Pc2Nb] deposited on ITO (indium-doped tin oxide) show a reversible redox process in neutral or acidic aqueous electrolytes. The electrochemical and electrochromic properties of the sandwiched complex, combined with impedance and UV/visible spectral measurements, are presented and discussed. The achieved electrochemical information, while substantially in keeping with the observed chemical redox behavior and theoretical predictions, qualifies [Pc2Nb] as an "optically passive" electrode and a promising material for its use in electrochromic devices.

Abstract
Bis(phthalocyaninato)niobium(IV) has been prepared and isolated as a monosolvate, [Pc(2)Nb].ClNP (ClNP = 1-chloronaphthalene). It is a light-brown, stable-to-air Nb(IV) (d(1)) paramagnetic sandwich-like species, which, upon oxidation by I(2) under mild conditions, undergoes a metal-centered monoelectronic oxidation to give the diamagnetic Nb(V) (d(0)) [Pc(2)Nb](+) fragment, with formation of saltlike species of formula [Pc(2)Nb](I(3))(I(2))0.5(ClNP)(3.5) (I). The structure of I has been elucidated by single-crystal X-ray work. Crystals are triclinic: formula C(64)H(32)N(16)Nb.I(3).0.5I(2).3.5C(10)H(7)Cl, M = 2194.8, a = 17.702(3) Å, b = 18.708(3) Å, c = 13.504(2) Å, V = 4267.5(13) Å(3), alpha = 106.00(2) degrees, beta = 93.39(2) degrees, gamma = 83.26(1) degrees, Z = 2, space group P&onemacr;. The structure of the [Pc(2)Nb](+) fragment, "stapled" by two inter-ligand C-C sigma bonds (C11A-C11B and C31A-C31B = 1.574(15) Å), together with its color and UV-visible spectral behavior, allows a straightforward assignment of the same "stapled" structure to the unoxidized [Pc(2)Nb]. The present niobium sandwiched materials reiterate the peculiar structural findings shown only by the previously reported [Pc(2)Ti].
