A case of naevus lipomatosus cutaneus superficialis of the scalp associated with pedunculated basal cell carcinoma

The Nevus Lipomatosus Superficialis of Face: A Case Report and Literature Review

Nevus lipomatosus superficialis (NLS) is a hamartoma of adipose tissue, rarely reported in the past 100 years. We treated one case, and we conducted a systematic review of the literature. A 41-year-old man presented with a cutaneous multinodular lesion in the posterior region near the right auricle. The lesion was excised and examined histopathologically. To review the literature, we searched PubMed with the keyword "NLS." The search was limited to articles written in English and whose full text was available. We analyzed the following data: year of report, nation of corresponding author, sex of patient, age at onset, duration of disease, location of lesion, type of lesion, associated symptoms, pathological findings, and treatment. Of 158 relevant articles in PubMed, 112 fulfilled our inclusion criteria; these referred to a total of 149 cases (cases with insufficient clinical information were excluded). In rare cases, the diagnosis of NLS was confirmed when the lesion coexisted with sebaceous trichofolliculoma and Demodex infestation. Clinical awareness for NLS has increased recently. NLS is an indolent and asymptomatic benign neoplasm that may exhibit malignant behavior in terms of huge lesion size and specific anatomical location. Early detection and curative treatment should be promoted.

[Nevus lipomatosus cutaneous superficialis. Report of four cases including an unusual presentation associated with massive lipomas and diffuse lipomatosis]

Nevus lipomatosus cutaneus superficialis is a rare, hamartomatous disorder, characterized by the presence of ectopic mature adipose tissue within the superficial dermis. Lesions occur within the first three decades of life. We report four new cases, including a patient with the most extensive affectation reported to date, which was associated with massive lipomas in the subcutaneous cell tissue and diffuse lipomatosis. To our knowledge, it is the first report of this disorder in Cuba.

Colocalization of lipedematous scalp and nevus lipomatosus superficialis: a case report

Lipedematous scalp (LS) is a rare condition of unknown etiology characterized by a thick, boggy scalp that occurs mostly in adult black females. The main pathologic finding consists of increased thickness of scalp resulting from thickening of the subcutaneous fat layer. Nevus lipomatosus superficialis (NLS) is an uncommon hamartomatous skin tumor characterized by soft, yellowish papules, or cerebriform plaques, usually localized on the buttock or thigh. Here, we report a 46-year-old woman who has NLS localized on the occipital area, accompanied by LS just beneath and peripheral area of this plaque. The diagnoses of NLS and LS were established by histopathological examination. In addition, the increase in subcutaneous fat layer was demonstrated using magnetic resonance imaging. The presented patient is the first case showing colocalization of NLS and LS.

[Polypoid basal cell carcinoma]

Basal cell carcinoma, the most common malignant neoplasm of the skin, has many clinical and histologic variants. We report about a 58-year-old patient with a rarely described, polypoid variant of this tumor. Polypoid basal cell carcinoma differs clinically from other variants by being exophytic and pedunculated and, histologically, the tumor aggregations are restricted only to the polypoid part.
