Solution-Focused Coaching for Friendship in Pediatric Rehabilitation: A Case Study of Goal Attainment, Client Engagement, and Coach Stances

AIMS

To examine goal attainment, engagement, and the stances used by coaches providing a solution-focused coaching intervention (SFC-peds) for young people with cerebral palsy pursuing friendship goals.

METHODS

The case study involved two clients with cerebral palsy (a young child and his mother, and a youth) and their service providers. An interpretive descriptive approach was used to analyze quantitative and qualitative data. Friendship goal attainment was assessed by the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure and goal attainment scaling, and client engagement was assessed using the Pediatric Rehabilitation Intervention Measure of Engagement-Service Provider version. Information from post-intervention client interviews was used to identify coach stances and relationships with client engagement.

RESULTS

Participants met their friendship goals and were considered to be highly engaged by their coaches. Four coach stances were identified: Respectful Inquiry, a Strengths Presupposition, Implementation Curiosity, and Inspiring Commitment. These stances, and aligned tactics, engaged clients on affective, cognitive, and behavioral levels, and impacted the client's stance toward their goal.

CONCLUSIONS

SFC-peds appears to be an effective and engaging approach for young people with disabilities working on friendship goals. The findings illustrate how the coach's stances and tactics engage clients, thus impacting the client's own stances toward change.

The antecedents of well-being in first-generation migrant children: A systematic review

Migrant children's well‐being has emerged into the spotlight of academic literature and policy‐makers in recent times. This systematic review is aimed at analysing the publication trends on the topic and at synthesising the available evidence on the antecedents of well‐being of first‐generation international migrant children. Systematic searches of primary studies were conducted in 18 databases using search terms related to migration, childhood and well‐being. Three rounds of screening and data extraction, researchers' full agreement and the inclusion criteria produced 39 eligible studies. Critical appraisal of results revealed a fragmentation in the literature, the evidence available being mostly descriptive and focused on involuntary migrants settled in Western countries. A bias across publications overlooking younger migrant children was unveiled. The compartmentalisation of the evidence hindered an understanding of the magnitude of the different effects of migration on well‐being. Antecedents of well‐being have been documented as factors fostering and hindering well‐being. Important gaps in literature and key antecedents of well‐being have been uncovered for voluntary and involuntary migrant children. These findings show limitations in the available evidence pointing to specific suggestions for future research that should help improve interventions at the social and individual levels.

Examining the psychological well-being of refugee children and the role of friendship and bullying

BACKGROUND

Refugee children might have experienced violent and traumatic events before settling into a new country. In the United Kingdom, the number of refugee children is increasing; however, little is known about their psycho-social and physical well-being.

AIM

This study aims to investigate the psychological well-being and behaviour of refugee children compared to British-born children on a number of psychological, social, behavioural, and health-related issues and to investigate the role of friendship as a protective factor.

SAMPLES

This study utilized a sample of 149 refugee children recruited from two charities, 79 of which are children aged 6-10 years and 70 older refugee children aged 11-16 years. The study also included 120 non-refugee children recruited from primary schools aged 6-10 years.

METHODS

This is a cross-sectional study that investigates the psycho-social well-being of refugee children compared to non-refugee British-born children. The study explored symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, emotional and behavioural problems (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire), self-esteem, friendships and popularity, bullying and victimization, physical health, and psychosomatic problems.

RESULTS

Young refugee children reported more peer problems, functional impairment, physical health, and psychosomatic problems compared to the control children and older refugee children groups. On the other hand, older refugee children had lower self-esteem (academic and social self-peers) compared to the younger refugee children group. The differences between the groups were explained by friendship quality, number of friends, peer bullying/victimization, or sibling bullying/victimization except for physical health and psychosomatic problems.

CONCLUSIONS

While refugee children were found to be at risk on various levels, the findings also point to the fact that social relationships including friendship quality and number of friends played an essential protective role. Conversely, bullying was a risk factor that explained many of the refugees' problems. These findings pave the way for future research to further probe into the well-being of refugee children in the United Kingdom while also targeting relevant intervention schemes specifically tailored to address their needs.

Television Viewing, Computer Use, and a Hostile Perception of Classmates Among Adolescents From 34 Countries

The present study investigated the relationship between adolescents’ perception of a lack of classmate support and their individual and their respective culture’s daily amounts of television viewing and computer use. We tested multilevel regression models based on data from the responses of 150 552 adolescents aged 11, 13, and 15 years from 34 cultures who participated in the 2001-2002 Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) survey. Results revealed that the average amount of television viewing in the respective adolescents’ culture explained variation in their perception of a lack of classmate support in addition to their own amount of television viewing. No effect for computer use was found. It appears that, in countries in which a great deal of television is consumed, everyone is affected and not only those who watch a high amount of television. This adds to concerns about television viewing as a significant risk to the health of adolescents.

Addressing childhood overweight: strategies learned from one Latino community

The purpose of this study is to understand one Latino community's perspective about childhood overweight within this high-risk ethnic group. Three focus groups, consisting of 12 mothers, 12 fathers, and 8 boys and 4 girls ages 10-12, participated. Transcripts of interviews were coded using N-VIVO and analyzed thematically. Several themes emerge: parents' demanding work schedules, lack of time, transportation issues, opportunities for physical activities, and lack of meal preparation. Participants knew good nutrition and exercise help prevent obesity. Nursing interventions must address multiple challenges with childhood obesity at the family and community levels.

Health-related quality of life in Icelandic school children

This study evaluated generic health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among 10 to 12-year-old Icelandic school age children who were either with or without chronic health condition. The children and their parents answered self-report questionnaires. For the 480 children who participated, girls were found to perceive their HRQOL significantly higher than the boys, children who visited the school nurse over a one-week period and children who indicated they were bullied by other children, perceived their HRQOL to be significantly lower than children who did not visit the school nurse over this time period or children who did not indicate they were bullied by other children in school. From the stepwise regression analysis, perception of health, school connectedness, health promotion, bullying victimization, visits to the school nurse and age, significantly predicted 43.8% of the variance of the girls' perception of their HRQOL. However, perception of health, school connectedness, and chronic health condition/illnesses, bullying victimization and after school activities predicted 48.1% of the boys' perception of their HRQOL. Children with chronic health condition or illnesses, reported their HRQOL to be significantly lower than children without chronic health condition. Assessing HRQOL among 10 to 12-year-old children might be helpful to take preventive action early on in children's life and development.

'I was running away from death'- the pre-flight experiences of unaccompanied asylum seeking children in the UK

OBJECTIVE

To collect information about the pre-flight experiences of unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC) in the UK to increase the understanding of support needed on arrival in the UK.

METHODS

Retrospective social services case file and legal statement review and semi-structured in-depth interviews with 100 UASC.

RESULTS

Nearly half of all UASC have experienced separation from or loss of parents and/or family members (47%), and a further 41% had personally experienced or witnessed violence. Sexual violence (such as rape) was reported by 24% of African girls. Many children reported complex journeys to the UK.

CONCLUSIONS

UASC arrive in the UK with a variety of potentially traumatic experiences. Whilst research is starting to identify some of the experiences of UASC, further culturally appropriate research is needed to identify their health and social needs after arrival. Further research will help to identify the specific experiences of UASC, indicating where services should be improved to deal with their complex and diverse needs.
