Nontarget embolization during transarterial chemoembolization, although infrequent, can be a serious complication. The authors describe a case of nontarget gastric embolization to the stomach after transarterial chemoembolization and describe the published incidence of nontarget embolization to various organs, its diagnosis, treatment, and possible outcomes.

Chemoembolization of tongue carcinoma with ethylcellulose microcapsuled carboplatinum and its basic study

OBJECTIVE

By using lingual artery chemoembolization on the basis of detailed basic studies to search an additional way for treatment of certain tongue carcinoma.

METHODS

Study of lingual artery cast specimens in post-mortem human was processed. Patients with tongue carcinoma were chemoembolized with Carboplatinum microcapsules.

RESULTS

Microcapsule embolism located approximately at the fifth to the sixth branches level of deep lingual artery. Effective clinical outcomes complied with the anatomy.

CONCLUSION

Lingual artery chemoembolization with microcapsuled Carboplatinum of 214.0 +/- 48.0 microm showed nice efficacy in therapy of mid-tongue carcinoma.

Rising incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma: the role of hepatitis B and C; the impact on transplantation and outcomes

Hepatocellular carcinoma caused by hepatitis B and hepatitis C are global scourges but are likely to peak in incidence in the next 2 decades and then decline. Universal vaccination has been effective in stemming the incidence of chronic hepatitis B and early-onset HCC in regions of high endemicity where implemented, but preventive measures in HCV are not yet available. After the attrition of older affected generations, the incidence of HCC will likely decline rapidly. While no vaccine is currently available for hepatitis C, cases are projected to peak and decline because of a marked reduction in transmission as a result of behavioral modification and safeguarding of blood supplies. Until these epidemiologic projections come to pass, management of hepatocellular carcinoma will continue to become a progressively more frequently encountered clinical challenge. Therapy for chronic hepatitis may ameliorate but will not eliminate the development of tumors. The demand for orthotopic liver transplantation will continue to climb, and palliative therapies for non-resectable cases will require studies aimed at optimization of benefit. LDLT may remain an option for high-risk patients affording tumor-free survival for some otherwise terminal patients.

Safety and complications of interventional radiology for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with haemophilia and cirrhosis

Many patients with haemophilia have been chronically infected with hepatitis virus owing to multiple transfusions and the prevalence of hepatocellular carcinoma will probably increase in this population. We evaluated the safety and complications of radiological intervention for hepatocellular carcinoma in eight patients with haemophilia and cirrhosis. Radiological interventions can be performed safely in all patients with haemophilia. Unexpectedly, the most common complication was bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract. Attention should be paid to this potential problem in order to take appropriate steps to minimize its occurrence.
