Predisposition of trees by air pollutants to low temperatures and moisture stress

Air pollution can have direct effects on trees. It can cause visible injury to foliage and a disruption of physiological processes, such as photosynthesis and carbon allocation, leading to losses in growth and productivity. This review suggests that of equal or greater importance is the potential of air pollutants to indirectly affect tree growth and vitality by predisposing them to injury from other abiotic and biotic stresses. Predisposition by air pollutants can be the result of a disruption in biochemical processes, such as enzyme activity or production, or physiological factors (e.g. stomatal closure, carbon allocation). Air pollutants such as SO(2), O(3) and acidic mists have been implicated as predisposing agents to two of the most important of these stresses: low temperature and soil moisture. Probable mechanisms, as well as implications of predicted changes in global climate will be discussed.

Effects of exposure to ozone and water stress on the following season's growth of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.)

Bud break and growth of beech trees were measured during the growing season of 1992. The trees had previously been exposed, through the growing season of 1991, to one of four treatments: (1) episodic ozone for 128 d, total dose = 46-3 ppm h; (2) air purified by filtration through Purified and charcoal; (3) ozone together with a period of water shortage: (4) filtered air with a period of water shortage. Despite uniform growth conditions during 1992. the previous water stress treatment caused bud break to begin slightly earlier, but the rates of shoot growth and the length of the first flush branches were reduced (40%). In well-watered plants ozone caused a reduced Tate of shoot growth during the first week after bud break. The total amount of growth during 1992 was shown to be reduced (36%) by the previous water stress treatment, In the case of the well-watered trees, exposure to ozone in the previous year reduced the amount of new growth by 17%, which was the result of reduced internal expansion. When ozone was combined with water stress, there was no further reduction in the amount of new growth, but there was a fall in the number of internodes relative to water-stressed plants grown in filtered air. Ozone and water stress applied singly reduced growth. A combination of the two stresses, however, caused no additional reduction in growth, but reduced the number of internodes. The possible implications of the aftereffects of these stresses are discussed in relation to reduced productivity and canopy structure.

Contrasting effects of elevated CO2 on the root and shoot growth of four native herbs commonly found in chalk grassland

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of ambient (345 μl l^-1 ) and elevated (590 μl l^-1 ) CO₂ on the root and shoot growth of four native chalk grassland herbs: Sanguisorba minor Scop, (salad burnet), Lotus carniculatus L. (birdsfoot trefoil), Anthyllis vulneraria L. (kidney vetch) and Plantago media L. (hoary plantain). Elevated CO₂ had contrasting effects on both shoot and root growth of the four species studied. Both leaf expansion and production were stimulated by elevated CO₂ for S. minor, L. corniculatus and P. media, whilst for A. vulneraria, only leaflet shape appeared to be altered by elevated CO₂ , with the production of broader leaflets, compared with those produced in ambient CO₂ . After 100 d shoot biomass was enhanced in elevated CO₂ for S. minor and L. corniculatus, whilst there was no effect of elevated CO₂ on shoot biomass for A. vulneraria or P. media. Contrasting effects of CO₂ were also apparent for measurements of specific leaf area (SLA), which increased for L. corniculatus, decreased for A. vulneraria and remained unaltered for S. minor and P. media in elevated compared with ambient CO₂ . Elevated CO₂ also had contrasting effects on both the growth and morphology of roots. The accumulation of root biomass was stimulated following exposure to elevated CO₂ for S. minor and L. corniculatus whilst there was no effect on root biomass for A. vulneraria or P. media. Root length was measured on three occasions during the 100 d and revealed that exposure to elevated CO₂ promoted root extension in S. minor, L. corniculatus and P. media, but not in A. vulneraria. Specific root length (SRL, length per unit dry weight) was increased in elevated CO₂ for one species, P. media, whilst the root to shoot ratio of all four species remained unchanged by CO₂ . These results show that four native herbs differ in their response to CO₂ , suggesting that the structure of this plant community may be altered in the future.

Whole-plant growth and leaf formation in ozonated hybrid poplar (Populus x euramericana)

Seasonal growth was studied in potted cuttings of hybrid poplar (one clone of Populus x euramericana) either exposed to ozone in filtered air (0 = control, 0.05, 0.10 microl litre(-1)) or in ambient air (mean = 0.03 microl litre(-1)). Only at 0.10 microl litre(-1) was biomass production reduced and related to leaf loss rather than leaf formation, since the latter was similar in all treatments. Stem length at 0.10 microl litre(-1) approached that of the control, whereas starch concentration in the green stem bark tended to be reduced, as were the ratios of stem weight/length and root/shoot biomass. The changes in carbon allocation and biomass production gradually became established during the second half of the growing season. At the altered carbon allocation at 0.10 microl litre(-1), the ratio of whole-plant production/attached foliage area resembled that of the other O(3) regimes. However, the latter ratio was strongly reduced at 0.10 microl litre(-1) when calculated on the basis of the potential foliage area, as compensated for the O(3)-induced leaf loss. Thus the carbon return/cost balance of the totally formed foliage was low, although the relative-growth rate of ozonated plants temporarily reached that of the control. The relation between leaf differentiation under ozonation (lowered stomatal density) and whole-plant production remains uncertain. The plant behavior found is discussed in terms of passive response or acclimatization to O(3) stress.

Branch growth and leaf gas exchange of Populus tremula exposed to low ozone concentrations throughout two growing seasons

During two consecutive growing seasons, the same potted individuals of European aspen (Populus tremula), grown from root cuttings of one clone, were fumigated with either ambient air or ozone concentrations of 0 (control), 0.05 or 0.1 microlitre litre(-1). Structure and biomass of the annually formed branches were analysed after excision at the end of each season. Only at 0.1 microlitre litre(-1) was branch weight reduced, and crooked axes occurred in each season. During the second season, branch length and leaf sizes were strongly reduced, while many leaves displayed yellowish deficiency symptoms and lowered cation concentrations. Such leaves contrasted to those showing characteristic O3-bronzing. Although foliage density was enhanced due to reduced branch length, the area of attached foliage was limited by the small leaf sizes, necrotic leaves and premature leaf loss. During mid-summer of the second fumigation period, photosynthetic capacity, carboxylation efficiency and water-use efficiency (WUE) declined in (attached) yellowish and bronze leaves at 0.1 microlitre litre(-1), whereas green leaves at 0.05 microlitre litre(-1) displayed accelerated senescence in late summer while maintaining WUE. It is concluded that the differences in branch growth between the two growing seasons were caused in part by internal changes in those plant organs (root and basal stem), which had experienced both fumigation periods.
