The role and applications of ultrasound in ambulatory gynaecology

Ultrasound has changed gynaecological practice and continues to do so. One of the earliest applications of abdominal scanning in gynaecology was for monitoring follicular development during fertility treatment with clomiphene citrate or gonadotrophins in the 1960s and 1970s. Subsequently, it was natural that with the introduction of in vitro fertilization, abdominal and transvaginal ultrasound played a key role in the development of oocyte retrieval techniques. These were truly the first interventional ultrasound-guided ambulatory procedures in gynaecology. In this chapter, the reader will be introduced to the roles that the various ultrasound modalities play in our current daily practice, and how they have changed the management of numerous gynaecological conditions in both diagnostic and therapeutic contexts. We will also outline the recent developments and the 'hot' research topics in this field.

Three-dimensional craniofacial reconstruction imaging

This review article aims to describe and discuss the imaging techniques most commonly used in medicine and dentistry to obtain three-dimensional images of the craniofacial complex. Three-dimensional imaging techniques provide extensive possibilities for the detailed and precise analysis of the whole craniofacial complex, for virtual (on-screen) simulation and real simulation of orthognathic surgery cases on biomodels before treatment, as well as for the detailed evaluation of the effects of treatment. Laser scanning in combination with the stereolithographic biomodeling seems to be a very promising combination for three-dimensional imaging, although there is still considerable room for improvement. Constant efforts should be made in the direction of developing and enhancing the existing techniques as well as exploring the potential for developing new methods based on emerging sectors of technology.

The role of three-dimensional ultrasound in obstetrics

Three-dimensional ultrasound is a relatively new imaging modality with several potential advantages over conventional two-dimensional sonography. There is now increasing evidence that three-dimensional ultrasound can in many ways assist in the examination of the fetus. The enthusiasm generated by some groups, however, is not universally shared. It is the aim of this review to summarize the contemporary role of three-dimensional ultrasound in obstetric sonography by giving a critical appraisal of the relevant literature published recently, with emphasis on first and second trimester anatomy and fetal organ and placenta volumetry.

Ultrasound imaging in three and four dimensions

Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of ultrasound images was first demonstrated nearly 15 years ago, but only now is becoming a clinical reality. In the meantime, methods for 3D reconstruction of CT and MRI images have achieved an advanced state of development, and 3D imaging with these modalities has been applied widely in clinical practice. 3D applications in ultrasound have lagged behind CT and MRI, because ultrasound data is much more difficult to render in 3D, for a variety of technical reasons, than either CT or MRI data. Only in the past few years has the computing power of ultrasound equipment reached a level adequate enough for the complex signal processing tasks needed to render ultrasound data in three dimensions. At this point in time, the clinical application of 3D ultrasound is likely to advance rapidly, as improved 3D rendering technology becomes more widely available. This article is a review of the present status of 3D ultrasound imaging. It begins by comparing the characteristics of CT, MRI, and ultrasound image data that either make these data amenable or not amenable to 3D reconstruction. The article then considers the technical features involved with acquiring an ultrasound 3D data set and the mechanisms for reconstructing the images. Finally, the article reviews the literature that is available regarding clinical application of 3D ultrasound in obstetrics, ultrasound, the abdomen, and blood vessels.
