Abstract
BACKGROUND Passive integrated transponder devices (PIT tags) are a valuable tool for individual identification of animals. Similarly, the surgical implantation of transmitters and bio-loggers can provide useful data on animal location, physiology and behavior. However, to avoid unnecessary recapture and related stress of study animals, PIT tags and bio-loggers should function reliably for long periods of time. Here, we evaluated the retention of PIT tags, and of very high frequency (VHF) transmitters and bio-loggers that were either implanted subcutaneously or into the peritoneal cavity of Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber). RESULTS Over a 21-year period, we implanted PIT tags in 456 individuals and failed to detect a PIT tag at recapture in 30 cases, consisting of 26 individuals (6% of individuals). In all instances, we were still able to identify the individual due to the presence of unique ear tag numbers and tail scars. Moreover, we implanted 6 VHFs, 36 body temperature loggers and 21 heart rate loggers in 28 individuals, and experienced frequent loss of temperature loggers (at least 6 of 23 recaptured beavers) and heart rate loggers (10 of 18 recaptured beavers). No VHFs were lost in 2 recaptured beavers. CONCLUSIONS Possible causes for PIT tag loss (or non-detection) were incorrect implantation, migration of the tag within the body, a foreign body reaction leading to ejection, or malfunctioning of the tag. We speculate that logger loss was related to a foreign body reaction, and that loggers were either rejected through the incision wound or, in the case of temperature loggers, possibly adhered and encapsulated to intestines, and then engulfed by the gastro-intestinal tract and ejected. We discuss animal welfare implications and give recommendations for future studies implanting bio-loggers into wildlife.

Abstract
Biodegradable and absorbable sutures have been widely used in surgical procedures. However, for the repair of ligament and tendon injures, the biodegradable suture cannot provide sufficient mechanical support to close the wound for a long period of time which is important to completely heal the tissue. Herein, we develop a simple method that makes a surface coating to prolong the degradation of the suture in vivo. Polylactic acid (PLLA) and Polycaprolactone (PCL) were successfully coated to a commercial degradable polydioxanone (PDO) suture in this study, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the smooth surface of the coated sutures. Moreover, live/dead assay of human fibroblasts after co-culturing with the modified/unmodified sutures showed fairly good cellular activity. In vivo study demonstrates the degradation properties of sutures were significantly changed after the surface coating. The raw suture exhibited the fastest degradation in 12 weeks, showing significantly decline in mechanical strength. Interestingly, the PCL-coated suture was able to maintain more than 20% of its original tensile strength after 12 weeks' implantation. In addition, in vivo results of PCL-coated sutures also showed less inflammatory cell infiltration and less surface inflammation. These findings indicate the one step suture-coating method could be feasibly for the development of clinical equipment.

Abstract
This article summarizes the available information on different soft tissue surgical procedures in rabbits, based on the literature and the authors' experiences, emphasizing the differences between rabbits and the more familiar dogs and cats. The major surgical principles in rabbits are discussed, and common surgical procedures, such as abdominal exploration, gastrotomy, enterotomy, liver lobectomy, nephrectomy, cystotomy, cystectomy, ovariohysterectomy, ovariectomy, orchidectomy, are described.

Abstract
AIM This study was conducted to evaluate and compare the tissue reactivity and suture handling characteristics of chromic gut, silk, and 'jimat' suture materials in cat thigh muscle. MATERIALS AND METHODS This experimental study was conducted from November, 2013 to April, 2014 in Kombolcha Animal Diseases Survey, Research and Diagnostic Laboratory, Kombolcha, Ethiopia. A total of 36 local breed male cats were randomly assigned into chromic gut, silk, and "jimat" groups of 12 cats each as A, B, and C, respectively. The hind leg muscle biceps femoris was incised and sutured with suture materials according to their groups. The muscle samples with its suture were collected at six different days interval i.e. 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 and processed histopathologically to assess the degree of leukocytic infiltration and fibrous and granulation tissue formation (GTF). In addition, all suture materials were evaluated intraoperatively about their handling characteristics, by rating the precision of knot tying, square knot positioning, and resistance to knot slippage. The statistical analysis was done with two-way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and Chi-square tests. RESULTS The histopathology showed that "jimat" thread (2.4±1.2) had produced least leukocytic infiltration than chromic gut (4.5±1.9) and silk (4.3±1.5) sutures during the study period. Higher GTF was seen at day 3 (6 [100%]), 7 (6 [100%]) and day 14 (4 [66.7%]) in all sutures, whereas "jimat" showed significantly (p<0.05) higher fibrous tissue formation (10 [83.3%]) than others. Moreover, "jimat" suture had equal suture handling characteristics (p>0.05) with both chromic gut and silk. CONCLUSION The result indicated that a single strand "jimat" thread appears to be the most satisfactory suture material as regards to both tissue reaction and suture handling characteristics for skeletal muscle approximation in cats and provided that studies on its carcinogenic effects should be done.
