Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgical management for chondrosarcoma of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is challenging due to the anatomical location involving the facial nerve and the functional joint. The purpose of this case series was to analyze the largest number of TMJ chondrosarcoma cases reported from a single institution and to review the literature about chondrosarcoma involving the TMJ. METHODS Ten TMJ chondrosarcoma patients at Seoul National University Dental Hospital were included in this study. Radiographic features, surgical approaches, histopathologic subtypes, and treatment modalities were evaluated. All case reports of TMJ chondrosarcoma published in English from 1954 to 2021 were collected under PRISMA guidelines and comprehensively reviewed. RESULTS The lesions were surgically resected in all 10 patients with efforts to preserve facial nerve function. Wide excision including margins of normal tissue was performed to ensure adequate resection margins. All TMJs were reconstructed with a metal condyle except one, which was reconstructed with vascularized costal bone. At last follow-up, all patients were still alive, and there had been no recurrence. Among 47 cases (patients from the literature and our cases), recurrence was specified in 43 and occurred in four (9.5%). CONCLUSIONS For surgical management of TMJ chondrosarcoma, wide excision must consider preservation of the facial nerve. Reconstruction using a metal condyle prosthesis and a vascularized free flap is reliable. A more conservative surgical approach correlates with a favorable prognosis for facial nerve recovery. Nevertheless, wide excision is imperative to prevent tumor recurrence. In cases in which the glenoid fossa is unaffected by the tumor, it is deemed unnecessary to reconstruct the glenoid fossa within an oncological setting.

Abstract
Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare high-grade variant of chondrosarcoma distinguished by its aggressive nature. Molecular studies aid in establishing the diagnosis. We present a case report of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma in the maxilla of a 39-year-old male patient and a literature review of 42 gnathic cases of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma with a discussion of clinical, imaging, microscopic, immunohistochemical, and molecular features.

Abstract
Parapharyngeal space (PPS) masses are relatively rare lesions of the head and neck, and account for 0.5-1.5% of head and neck lesions. The most common lesion to occur in the PPS is a benign salivary neoplasm, typically pleomorphic adenoma either from the deep parotid or from ectopic parotid tissue rests within the PPS. A calcified or ossified mass in this location is exceedingly rare, but a calcified variant of pleomorphic adenoma has been reported. In this study, we present a patient with a heavily calcified PPS mesenchymal chondrosarcoma with an unusual presentation. We discuss the imaging and pathologic findings followed by a review of the current literature.

Abstract
Chondrosarcoma (CS) is a malignant tumour of long and flat bone characterised by the formation of cartilage. Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MCS) is a rare subtype of CS that is more aggressive and may lead to erroneous diagnosis in a limited biopsy. The diagnosis is mainly based on the histopathological appearance of biphasic pattern of undifferentiated small round cells separated by islands of well-differentiated hyaline cartilage. We report a case of 13-year-old boy who initially presented with gum swelling and the biopsy result suggested a benign fibrous lesion. Following an extensive lesion shown in radiologic findings, the tumour excision was done and finally was diagnosed as an MCS of the maxilla. The patient was given postoperative chemotherapy (EURO-EWING 99 regimen), and now on regular follow-up for monitoring of local recurrence or tumour metastasis.

Abstract
The objective was to integrate the available published data on chondrosarcoma (CHS) of the jaw bones into a comprehensive analysis of its clinical and histological features, treatment, and prognostic factors. An electronic search was undertaken in October 2017. To be eligible, the publication had to provide sufficient clinical/histological data to confirm the diagnosis. One hundred and ten publications (224 cases of CHS) were identified and included. There was a slightly higher prevalence of CHS in males than in females. Most subjects with CHS were in the second to fifth decades of life. The most common symptom was swelling and the most commonly observed location was the maxilla. Histologically, most tumours were of the conventional type and were low grade tumours. The treatment of choice was tumour resection. Histological grade, treatment with chemotherapy alone, and the presentation of recurrence or metastasis were found to be significant independent prognostic factors: patients who presented high-grade tumours, who received chemotherapy alone as the treatment of choice, and those who presented recurrence or metastasis were more likely to have a worse prognosis. In addition, radical surgery associated with radiotherapy as the treatment protocol showed a better prognosis.

Abstract
Myxoid variant of chondrosarcoma is an uncommon potentially lethal malignant tumor which is even rare in pediatric age group. In the present paper, we report one such case of intermediate grade myxoid chondrosarcoma of left side of maxilla in a 12-year-old girl. The present case had a firm, painless, and lobulated growth in premolar-molar region which was associated with bicortical expansion. Maxillofacial imaging showed ill-defined radiolucency with displaced maxillary molars. Osteolytic changes were evident with the alveolus and walls of maxillary sinus. Owing to the age of the patient, surgical excision was selected as the modality of management followed by postoperative radiotherapy. This report encompasses the entire gamut of clinicopathological, radiological, and treatment modalities employed for chondrosarcoma.

Abstract
Mesenchymal chondrosarcomas (MC) are rare and aggressive forms of chondrosarcoma. They are distinct tumors arising in unicentric or multicentric locations from both skeletal and extraskeletal tissues. The most affected region is the facial skeleton, especially the jaws. In this report, we present a case of MC primarily involving the mandible in a 60-year-old female patient.

Abstract
Orbital mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a very uncommon lesion of the bone and extraskeletal tissue. To our knowledge, approximately 30 cases have been described. We present the case of a 52-year-old male who presented with a history of progressive proptosis and chemosis of the right eye caused by an orbital tumor. He underwent exenteration of the right orbit, and the histological examination revealed a mesenchymal orbital chondrosarcoma. This paper attempts to describe a rare entity that should be considered in the differential diagnosis of calcified orbital lesions, especially in young adults. Complete removal of the tumor is the mainstay of treatment, but adjuvant radiation therapy and chemotherapy should be considered.

Abstract
Cancer gene fusions that encode a chimeric protein are often characterized by an intragenic discontinuity in the RNA\expression levels of the exons that are 5' or 3' to the fusion point in one or both of the fusion partners due to differences in the levels of activation of their respective promoters. Based on this, we developed an unbiased, genome-wide bioinformatic screen for gene fusions using Affymetrix Exon array expression data. Using a training set of 46 samples with different known gene fusions, we developed a data analysis pipeline, the "Fusion Score (FS) model", to score and rank genes for intragenic changes in expression. In a separate discovery set of 41 tumor samples with possible unknown gene fusions, the FS model generated a list of 552 candidate genes. The transcription factor gene NCOA2 was one of the candidates identified in a mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. A novel HEY1-NCOA2 fusion was identified by 5' RACE, representing an in-frame fusion of HEY1 exon 4 to NCOA2 exon 13. RT-PCR or FISH evidence of this HEY1-NCOA2 fusion was present in all additional mesenchymal chondrosarcomas tested with a definitive histologic diagnosis and adequate material for analysis (n = 9) but was absent in 15 samples of other subtypes of chondrosarcomas. We also identified a NUP107-LGR5 fusion in a dedifferentiated liposarcoma but analysis of 17 additional samples did not confirm it as a recurrent event in this sarcoma type. The novel HEY1-NCOA2 fusion appears to be the defining and diagnostic gene fusion in mesenchymal chondrosarcomas.

Abstract
Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the head and neck is an uncommon tumor with a potential for exhibiting highly aggressive behavior. When these tumors arise in the head and neck region, they appear to have a predilection for the maxillofacial skeleton; less often, they may involve other soft tissue sites in the head and neck. The diagnosis is challenging and may be assisted by molecular pathologic techniques when only limited tissue is available for analysis. Management is primarily surgical. Although adjuvant radiation appears to convey some benefit by reducing tumor bulk when these lesions have extended beyond bony confines, there is no evidence to suggest that this is associated with improved outcome. Chemotherapy does not appear to be effective in the limited experience documented thus far. Patients with complete local control following resection should be followed closely for development of distant metastasis, which signifies a worse clinical outcome. Future effective therapy may be found in the identification of molecular targets responsive to adjuvant chemotherapy or biologic modifiers.

Abstract
We reviewed the case notes of 88 patients who were treated for sarcomas of the oral and maxillofacial region over a period of 24 years. There were 51 men (mean age 23 years) and 37 women (mean age 29). Forty-six tumours were in the mandible. Osteosarcoma accounted for 31 cases, and rhabdomyosarcoma 21 (usually under the age of 10 years).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare form of chondrosarcoma and mandibular localization is rare. OBSERVATION We report a case of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the mandible in a 23-year-old patient who consulted for a voluminous tumor of the right mandible. Radiological findings suggested a malignant tumor. A hemimandibulectomy and a pelvectomy were performed. The histological assessment showed zones of neoplastic cartilage and small ovoid cells, typical of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. DISCUSSION Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor of skeletal and extra skeletal origin. The most frequent localizations are the femur, the ribs, and facial bones. Histologically, these tumors have a typical biphasic pattern consisting of both small cells and islands of atypical cartilage. Because of its rich vascular component, this lesion has often been confused with hemangiopericytoma. Surgery is the usual treatment. The prognosis is very poor with a high risk of relapse and metastasis.
