Impact to short-term high intensity intermittent training on different storages of body fat, leptin and soluble leptin receptor levels in physically active non-obese men: A pilot investigation

BACKGROUND & AIMS

Studies have postulated High Intensity Intermittent Training (HIIT) as a superior strategy to reduce body fat. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects HIIT and steady-state training (SST) on body composition, leptin, soluble leptin receptor (sOB-R) levels, and hunger perception in physically active non-obese men.

METHODS

Twenty men performed five weeks of HIIT (5 km - 1 min running at 100% speed correspondent to VȩO_2peak - v VȩO_2peak - interspersed with 1-min passive recovery; n = 10) or SST (5 km at 70% of vVȩO_2peak continuously; n = 10) three times a week. Body composition, and hunger perception were assessed at pre- and post-training and were compared by a two-way analysis (group and training period) with repeated measures in the second factor. A fasting time-course (baseline, 24 h, and 48 h after an experimental session of exercise) of leptin and sOB-R levels were measured at pre- and post-five weeks of training and assessed by a three-way analysis (group, period and time of measurement) with repeated measures in the second and third factors.

RESULTS

There was no effect on body composition and hunger perception. Leptin was reduced in both groups, while sOB-R was increased post-five weeks of training in HIIT but not in the SST.

CONCLUSIONS

Although both training groups exerted alterations in leptin levels, only HIIT was able increased sOB-R levels, this suggest a superior impact on central responses in physically active non-obese men.

Soluble leptin receptor and leptin are associated with baseline adiposity and metabolic risk factors, and predict adiposity, metabolic syndrome, and glucose levels at 2-year follow-up: the Cyprus Metabolism Prospective Cohort Study

We examined the relationship between serum levels of leptin-binding protein (soluble leptin receptor [sOB-R]) and leptin with metabolic parameters at baseline and prospectively at 2-year follow-up in young healthy men. A total of 916 eighteen-year-old men were examined at baseline, with a subgroup of 91 participants examined again 2 years later. Anthropometric and metabolic measurements were performed at baseline and at follow-up. In the cross-sectional study, levels of sOB-R were significantly inversely correlated with all baseline measures of obesity and metabolic risk factors (blood pressure, total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and fasting glucose), and significantly positively correlated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. After correcting for age, smoking status, and waist-to-hip ratio, the inverse correlation remained statistically significant for all measures of adiposity, fasting glucose, and the metabolic syndrome score. Correlations for leptin were similar in magnitude but opposite in direction to correlations for sOB-R. In prospective analyses, baseline levels of sOB-R were predictive at 2-year follow-up of fasting glucose, the metabolic syndrome score, and measures of adiposity in both unadjusted and adjusted models. Similarly, leptin was predictive of fasting glucose, the metabolic syndrome score, adiposity, and systolic blood pressure. We confirm correlations of leptin and sOB-R levels with measures of adiposity and metabolic risk factors at baseline, and demonstrate for the first time prospectively the role of sOB-R as an independent, although weak, predictor of metabolic syndrome and fasting glucose in young men.

Increased circulating adiponectin levels and decreased leptin/soluble leptin receptor ratio throughout puberty in female ballet dancers: association with body composition and the delay in puberty

INTRODUCTION

Ballet dancers (BDs) have a negative energy balance related to physical training that results in alterations in body composition, sexual development, and adipokine secretion. Our aims were to study anthropometric parameters, body composition, and their relationship with adipokines throughout pubertal development.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

We carried out a prospective follow-up study of 22 female Caucasian BDs (Tanner II stage) followed throughout puberty. Nutritional status was determined by measurement of height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). We calculated growth velocity, bone maturity, and body composition at Tanner stages II, III, and V by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Circulating leptin, adiponectin, and soluble leptin receptor (sObR) levels were determined.

RESULTS

BDs presented a delay in skeletal maturation during puberty, without affectation of final height. Energy intake was deficient according to their physical exercise, and they had a delay of 1 year in the mean age of menarche. Leptin levels were decreased, whereas sObR and adiponectin levels were increased throughout puberty. The percentage of trunk fat, total fat mass, and fat of the extremities was decreased throughout the study period (P<0.01). Lean mass was increased in the lower extremities, and bone mineral density was normal.

CONCLUSION

A negative energy balance together with maintained physical exercise induced modifications in body composition in BDs. Changes in leptin and adiponectin levels appear to be more related to total fat content than to BMI. Furthermore, the onset and delayed progress of puberty may be related with an inadequate energy balance due to increased exercise.
