Vibrational overtones and rotational structure of HCl in rare gas matrices

Time-dependent alignment of molecules trapped in octahedral crystal fields

The hindered rotational states of molecules confined in crystal fields of octahedral symmetry, and their time-dependent alignment obtained by pulsed nonresonant laser fields, are studied computationally. The control over the molecular axis direction is discussed based on the evolution of the rotational wave packet generated in the cubic crystal-field potential. The alignment degree obtained in a cooperative case, where the alignment field is applied in a favorable crystal-field direction, or in a competitive direction, where the crystal field has a saddle point, is presented. The investigation is divided into two time regimes where the pulse duration is either ultrashort, leading to nonadiabatic dynamics, or long with respect to period of molecular libration, which leads to synchronous alignment due to nearly adiabatic following. The results are contrasted to existing gas phase studies. In particular, the irregularity of the crystal-field energies leads to persistent interference patterns in the alignment signals. The use of nonadiabatic alignment for interrogation of crystal-field energetics and the use of adiabatic alignment for directional control of molecular dynamics in solids are proposed as practical applications.

Experimental analysis and modified rotor description of the infrared fundamental band of HCl in Ar, Kr, and Xe solutions

We report an experimental study of the rotovibrational fundamental PQR-band shapes in the IR absorption spectra of HCl dissolved in condensed rare gases in a wide range of temperatures. The effective vibrational frequencies are determined from analysis of the fine rotational structure partially resolved in the band wings. The central Q-branch components appear redshifted with respect to the effective vibrational frequencies, their shifts in different solvents found to match the HCl stretching mode shifts in binary Rg...HCl van der Waals heterodimers. Theoretical quasi-free rotor and modified rotor models are applied to describe evolution of the band profiles at changing thermodynamic conditions. Both models are shown to reproduce equally well the observed spectral density distributions in the band wings. However, the modified rotor formalism that accounts for depopulation of the lower-energy rotational solute states provides better agreement with the experiment in the range of the P- and R-branch maxima. We surmise that the Q branches separated from the measured spectral profiles are formed by transitions between rotationally hindered states of diatomic molecules coupled to the solvent by the local anisotropy of the interaction potential.

Intense-field alignment of molecules confined in octahedral fields

The combined effect of static octahedral potential and anisotropic interactions with intense linearly polarized light on the rotational motion of linear molecules is investigated. Avoided crossings of quantized energy levels corresponding to pendular states with different degrees of alignment are found by varying the strength parameters for the light and static fields. High alignment is achieved for both cooperative and competitive choices of the relative directionality of the two fields, thus presenting means for controlling the dynamics of impurity centers with respect to the surrounding media.

Photochemistry in the charge transfer and neutral excited states of HCl in Xe and Kr matrices

HCl-doped Xe and Kr films are irradiated with wavelength dispersed synchrotron radiation in the wavelength range from 200 to 130 nm. The growth of H, Cl, Xe2H+, XeH2, HXeCl, Kr2H+, and HKrCl as well as the decomposition of HCl are recorded by a combination of UV, VIS, and IR spectroscopy. A turnover in the formation of Xe2H+ and Kr2H+ by a predominant two-step reaction on neutral surfaces at low energies to a one-step formation on ionic surfaces is determined at 172 and 155 nm in Xe and Kr, respectively. A potential energy diagram for neutral and ionic states is derived that is consistent with a DIIS calculation, with new UV fluorescence bands from Xe+HCl- centers, with the turnover energies and with a deconvolution of the absorption spectra in neutral and ionic contributions. The cage exit of charged as well as of neutral H, the latter via a harpoon reaction, is discussed for the ionic surfaces. The self-limitation of HCl decomposition on the neutral surfaces due to absorption by H and Cl fragments is treated quantatively. Dissociation efficiencies phi(e), together with absolute absorption cross sections sigma(H) and sigma(Cl) of the fragments, are derived. sigma(H) and sigma(Cl) are of the order of 10(-16) cm(2) compared to 10(-18) cm(2) for sigma(HCl). Dissociation is accompanied by many excitation cycles of the fragments, which leads to light-induced migration of H and recombination. phi(e) therefore represents a product of the cage exit probability phi that was treated theoretically and the survival probability concerning geminate and nongeminate recombination.
