Elastic properties of two-dimensional hard disks in the close-packing limit

Extreme Poisson’s Ratios of Honeycomb, Re-Entrant, and Zig-Zag Crystals of Binary Hard Discs

Two-dimensional (2D) crystalline structures based on a honeycomb geometry are analyzed by computer simulations using the Monte Carlo method in the isobaric-isothermal ensemble. The considered crystals are formed by hard discs (HD) of two different diameters which are very close to each other. In contrast to equidiameter HD, which crystallize into a homogeneous solid which is elastically isotropic due to its six-fold symmetry axis, the systems studied in this work contain artificial patterns and can be either isotropic or anisotropic. It turns out that the symmetry of the patterns obtained by the appropriate arrangement of two types of discs strongly influences their elastic properties. The Poisson’s ratio (PR) of each of the considered structures was studied in two aspects: (a) its dependence on the external isotropic pressure and (b) in the function of the direction angle, in which the deformation of the system takes place, since some of the structures are anisotropic. In order to accomplish the latter, the general analytic formula for the orientational dependence of PR in 2D systems was used. The PR analysis at extremely high pressures has shown that for the vast majority of the considered structures it is approximately direction independent (isotropic) and tends to the upper limit for isotropic 2D systems, which is equal to +1. This is in contrast to systems of equidiameter discs for which it tends to 0.13, i.e., a value almost eight times smaller.

The range and nature of effective interactions in hard-sphere solids

Colloidal systems observed in video microscopy are often analysed using the displacements correlation matrix of particle positions. In non-thermal systems, the inverse of this matrix can be interpreted as a pair-interaction potential between particles. If the system is thermally agitated, however, only an effective interaction is accessible from the correlation matrix. We show how this effective interaction differs from the non-thermal case by comparing with high-statistics numerical data from hard-sphere crystals.

Faster strain fluctuation methods through partial volume updates

Elastic systems that are spatially heterogeneous in their mechanical response pose special challenges for molecular simulations. Standard methods for sampling thermal fluctuations of a system's size and shape proceed through a series of homogeneous deformations, whose magnitudes can be severely restricted by its stiffest parts. Here we present a Monte Carlo algorithm designed to circumvent this difficulty, which can be prohibitive in many systems of modern interest. By deforming randomly selected subvolumes alone, it naturally distributes the amplitude of spontaneous elastic fluctuations according to intrinsic heterogeneity. We describe in detail implementations of such "slice moves" that are consistent with detailed balance. Their practical application is illustrated for crystals of two-dimensional hard disks and random networks of cross-linked polymers.

Poisson's ratio of the fcc hard sphere crystal at high densities

Elastic constants and the Poisson ratio of the fcc hard-sphere crystalline phases, free of defects and with vacancies, are determined by two Monte Carlo methods: (i) the analysis of the box fluctuations in the constant pressure ensemble with variable box shape (N-P-T) and (ii) by the free-energy differentiation with respect to deformation in the fixed box ensemble (N-V-T). Very good agreement is observed for the extrapolated to the infinitely large system limit results of both the methods. The coefficients of the leading singularities of the elastic constants near close packing are estimated; they are well described by the free volume approximation. Two mechanisms influencing the Poisson ratio are studied. (i) It is shown that at high densities particle motions decrease the Poisson ratio with respect to the static case which corresponds to zero temperature. Simulations performed for systems of soft spheres, interacting through n-inverse-power potentials, r-n, show that the elastic constants of the hard spheres can be obtained in the limit n-->infinity. When T-->0 the elastic constants of the soft spheres tend to those of the static model. (ii) It is also shown that vacancies decrease C11 and C44 and increase C12 and, hence, increase the Poisson ratio with respect to the defect-free state of the system.

Large-scale simulations of the two-dimensional melting of hard disks

Large-scale computer simulations with more than four million particles have been performed to study the melting transition in a two-dimensional hard disk fluid. The van der Waals loop previously observed in the pressure-density relationship of smaller simulations is shown to disappear systematically with increase in sample size, but even with these large system sizes, the freezing transition still exhibits what appears to be weakly first-order behavior, though the scaling of the bond orientation order is consistent with the Halperin-Nelson-Young picture. Above this freezing transition region, scaling analysis of the translational order yields a lower bound for the melting density that is much higher than previously thought and provides compelling evidence that the solid phase first melts into a hexatic phase via a continuous transition, before it goes into the isotropic phase.

Melting of polydisperse hard disks

The melting of a polydisperse hard-disk system is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations in the semigrand canonical ensemble. This is done in the context of possible continuous melting by a dislocation-unbinding mechanism, as an extension of the two-dimensional hard-disk melting problem. We find that while there is pronounced fractionation in polydispersity, the apparent density-polydispersity gap does not increase in width, contrary to 3D polydisperse hard spheres. The point where the Young's modulus is low enough for the dislocation unbinding to occur moves with the apparent melting point, but stays within the density gap, just like for the monodisperse hard-disk system. Additionally, we find that throughout the accessible polydispersity range, the bound dislocation-pair concentration is high enough to affect the dislocation-unbinding melting as predicted by Kosterlitz, Thouless, Halperin, Nelson, and Young.
