Effects of humic acid on physical and hydrodynamic properties of kaolin flocs by particle image velocimetry

The physical and hydrodynamic properties of kaolin flocs including floc size, strength, regrowth, fractal structure and settling velocity were investigated by in situ particle image velocimetry technique at different humic acid concentration. Jar-test experimental results showed that the adsorbed humic acid had a significant influence on the coagulation process for alum and ferric chloride. Kaolin flocs formed with the ferric chloride were larger and stronger than those for alum at same humic acid concentration. Floc strength and regrowth were estimated by strength factor and recovery factor at different humic acid concentration. It was found that the increased humic acid concentration had a slight influence on the strength of kaolin flocs and resulted in much worse floc regrowth. In addition, the floc regrowth after breakage depended on the shear history and coagulants under investigation. The changes in fractal structure recorded continuously by in situ particle image velocimetry technique during the growth-breakage-regrowth processes provided a supporting information that the kaolin flocs exhibited a multilevel structure. It was proved that the increased humic acid concentration resulted in decrease in mass fractal dimension of kaolin flocs and consequently worse sedimentation performance through free-settling and microbalance techniques.

Lifetime of oil drops pressed by buoyancy against a planar interface: large drops

In a previous report [C. Rojas, G. Urbina-Villalba, and M. García-Sucre, Phys. Rev. E 81, 016302 (2010)] it was shown that emulsion stability simulations are able to reproduce the lifetime of micrometer-size drops of hexadecane pressed by buoyancy against a planar water-hexadecane interface. It was confirmed that small drops (r(i)< 10 μm) stabilized with β -casein behave as nondeformable particles, moving with a combination of Stokes and Taylor tensors as they approach the interface. Here, a similar methodology is used to parametrize the potential of interaction of drops of soybean oil stabilized with bovine serum albumin. The potential obtained is then employed to study the lifetime of deformable drops in the range 10 ≤ r(i) ≤ 1000 μm . It is established that the average lifetime of these drops can be adequately replicated using the model of truncated spheres. However, the results depend sensibly on the expressions of the initial distance of deformation and the maximum film radius used in the calculations. The set of equations adequate for large drops is not satisfactory for medium-size drops (10 ≤ r(i) ≤ 100 μm) , and vice versa. In the case of large particles, the increase in the interfacial area as a consequence of the deformation of the drops generates a very large repulsive barrier which opposes coalescence. Nevertheless, the buoyancy force prevails. As a consequence, it is the hydrodynamic tensor of the drops which determine the characteristic behavior of the lifetime as a function of the particle size. While the average values of the coalescence time of the drops can be justified by the mechanism of film thinning, the scattering of the experimental data of large drops cannot be rationalized using the methodology previously described. A possible explanation of this phenomenon required elaborate simulations which combine deformable drops, capillary waves, repulsive interaction forces, and a time-dependent surfactant adsorption.

An experimental and theoretical study of the self-assembly of gold nanoparticles at the surface of functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes

This paper reports the findings of a detailed study of the self-assembly of gold nanoparticles at the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The study included the development of a predictive model for the interactions (charge transfer, van der Waals, osmotic, elastic, nonelastic, and covalent) between tetraoctylammonium bromide-stabilized (TOAB) gold nanoparticles and alkyl- and alkylthiol-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). It also included the measurement of the coverage of gold nanoparticles at the surface of the above MWCNTs as a function of increasing alkyl chain length. One key finding is that it is possible to predict with a high degree of accuracy using the above model the measured coverage of gold nanoparticles adsorbed, either noncovalently or covalently, at the surface of a MWCNT. Another key finding is that, as predicted, under well-defined conditions the measured coverage of nanoparticles is very sensitive to the nature of the modified CNT surface and the contiguous environment, providing valuable insights that will underpin the rational design of functional nanoscale devices assembled from nanoparticle and CNT building blocks.

Scaling of the kinetics of slow aggregation and gel formation for a fluorinated polymer colloid

The aggregation and gelation kinetics in moderately concentrated (0.004 </= phi(0) </= 0.1) colloidal dispersions of fluorinated polymer particles has been studied. The aggregation was adjusted to proceed slowly enough to allow a convenient characterization of the kinetics through static and dynamic light scattering on quenched and diluted samples. A population balance model based on second-order aggregation rates is developed to compute the time evolution of the cluster mass distribution, from which we calculate the values of the average radii and structure factor measured by light scattering, so as to allow a direct comparison between measured and calculated quantities. The model suggests the introduction of a dimensionless time which allows the scaling of all the aggregation data on unique master curves defined by only two parameters: the exponent of the power-law aggregation kernel, lambda, and the aggregate fractal dimension, d(f). The predicted master curves were observed experimentally, which confirms the validity of the aggregation model and allows the unique determination of the kinetic and structural parameters of the aggregation process. The cluster growth behavior, although significantly slower than DLCA, shows power-law kinetics rather than the exponential one typical of RLCA and the cluster structure is characterized by an unexpectedly small fractal dimension, d(f) = 1.7. The occurrence of gelation has been characterized using small amplitude oscillatory shearing to monitor the time evolution of the elastic modulus. It is found that also these curves, together with the gel time value, scale with the stability ratio of primary particles for a given solid volume fraction. We further use the model to calculate the cumulative occupied volume fraction of the growing aggregates and quantify in this way the increasing space filling, which is solid volume fraction dependent. The experimentally determined dimensionless gel times, which are also solid volume fraction dependent, scale then directly with the dimensionless time to reach a certain degree of the space filling in the model. This finding suggests that, like the aggregation kinetics, the gelation kinetics is governed by a second-order rate process.
