The Anomalous Susceptibilities of Three‐Membered Ring Compounds

Open shell versus closed shell bonding interaction in cyclopropane derivatives: EDA-NOCV analyses

Cyclopropane ring is a very common motif in organic/bio-organic compounds. The chemical bonding of this strained ring is taught to all chemistry students. This three-membered cyclic, C3 ring is quite reactive which has attracted both, synthetic and theoretical chemists to rationalize/correlate its stability and bonding with its reactivity and physical properties over a century. There are a few bonding models (mainly the Bent-Bond model and Walsh model) of this C3 ring that are debated to date. Herein, we have carried out energy decomposition analysis coupled with natural orbital for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) to study the two most reactive bonds of cyclopropane rings of 49 different organic compounds containing different functional groups to obtain a much deeper bonding insight toward a more general bonding model of this class of compounds. The EDA-NOCV analyses of fragment orbitals and susequent bond formation revealed that the nature of the CC bond of the cyclopropane (splitting two bonds at a time out of three CC bonds) ring is preferred to form two dative covalent CC bonds (between a singlet olefin-fragment and an excited singlet carbene-fragment with a vacant sp2 orbital and a filled p-orbital) for the majority (37/49) of compounds over two covalent electron sharing bonds in some (7/49) compounds (between an excited triplet olefin and triplet carbene), while a few (5/49) compounds show flexibility to adopt either the electron sharing or dative covalent bond as both are equally possible. The effects of functional groups on the nature of chemical bond in cyclopropane rings have been studied in detail. Our bonding analyses are in line with the QTAIM analyses which produce small negative values of the Laplacian, significantly positive values of bond ellipticity, and accumulation of electron densities around the ring critical point of C3 -rings. These corresponding QTAIM parameters of C3 -rings are quite different for CC single bonds of normal hydrocarbons as expected. The chemical bonding in the majority of cyclopropane rings can be very similar to those of metal-olefin systems.

(1) H NMR Spectra. Part 28: Proton chemical shifts and couplings in three-membered rings. A ring current model for cyclopropane and a novel dihedral angle dependence for (3) J(HH) couplings involving the epoxy proton

The (1) H chemical shifts of selected three-membered ring compounds in CDCl(3) solvent were obtained. This allowed the determination of the substituent chemical shifts of the substituents in the three-membered rings and the long-range effect of these rings on the distant protons. The substituent chemical shifts of common substituents in the cyclopropane ring differ considerably from the same substituents in acyclic fragments and in cyclohexane and were modelled in terms of a three-bond (γ)-effect. For long-range protons (more than three bonds removed), the substituent effects of the cyclopropane ring were analysed in terms of the cyclopropane magnetic anisotropy and steric effect. The cyclopropane magnetic anisotropy (ring current) shift was modelled by (a) a single equivalent dipole perpendicular to and at the centre of the cyclopropane ring and (b) by three identical equivalent dipoles perpendicular to the ring placed at each carbon atom. Model (b) gave a more accurate description of the (1) H chemical shifts and was the selected model. After parameterization, the overall root mean square error for the dataset of 289 entries was 0.068 ppm. The anisotropic effects are significant for the cyclopropane protons (ca 1 ppm) but decrease rapidly with distance. The heterocyclic rings of oxirane, thiirane and aziridine do not possess a ring current. (3) J(HH) couplings of the epoxy ring proton with side-chain protons were obtained and shown to be dependent on both the H-C-C-H and H-C-C-O orientations. Both density functional theory calculations and a simple Karplus-type equation gave general agreement with the observed couplings (root mean square error 0.5 Hz over a 10-Hz range).

Assessment of σ-Diatropicity of the Cyclopropane Molecule

Spatial models of the current density field induced in the cyclopropane molecule by stationary, homogeneous magnetic fields, parallel to either the C3 or the C2 symmetry axis, have been constructed. A compact, abridged representation of the models is given via stagnation graphs that convey essential information. Maps of streamlines and moduli are also reported to complete current models that have proven useful to rationalize magnetic tensor properties, that is, magnetizability, 1H and 13C nuclear shieldings, and magnetic shielding along the C3 symmetry axis. Plots of Biot-Savart magnetic shielding density combined with current density visualization yield an accurate, detailed account of the shielding mechanisms. The magnetropicity of the system described by the current density model is fully consistent with the magnitude of magnetic tensors calculated at near Hartree-Fock level. In a field perpendicular to the molecular plane, cyclopropane sustains a diatropic sigma-ring current with the following peculiar features: (i) it follows the molecular periphery rather than the CC framework; (ii) it bifurcates in the proximity of the methylene moieties flowing along the CH bonds, both above and below the sigma(h) plane; (iii) it has an effect on the values of response properties, although it is not as large as expected from naive arguments (e.g., the center-of-mass value of the magnetic shielding constant is dominated by in-plane components rather than the out-of-plane component, which is in contrast to pi-aromatic systems such as benzene); (iv) it has a negligible effect on the strong anisotropy of carbon magnetic shielding, which is shown to arise from local currents. No evidence for strong diatropism, and therefore sigma-aromaticity of the cyclopropane molecule, was found on the magnetic criterion.
