Abstract
For π-conjugated systems, polaron formation has a major impact on their optoelectronic properties. In fact, for such systems, an exquisite interplay between electron delocalization and the steric effect determines their ground state properties. However, an excess charge (positive or negative) injection causes structural reorientation because of extended conjugation. Herein, we investigate the effect of such an excess charge in an individual polyphenylene on its quantum conductance behavior. By combining the DFT and NEGF formalisms, we characterize both structural and electronic changes occurring upon electron and hole injection. We demonstrate that for both the cationic and anionic radicals, the excess charge is observed to be localized, inducing a partial planarization of the molecule and forming cationic and anionic polarons, respectively. The calculated low-bias conductance values determine the polaronic effect and could be implemented for easy determination and measurement of polaron formation. In fact, cationic and anionic polarons induce a large degree of conductance switching, involving a decrease and increase of conductance, respectively.

Abstract
Polaron formation in conjugated polymers has a major impact on their optical and electronic properties. In polyphenylene, the molecular conformation is determined by a delicate interplay between electron delocalization and steric effects. Injection of excess charges is expected to increase the degree of conjugation, leading to structural distortions of the chain. Here we investigated at the single-molecule level the role of an excess charge in an individual oligophenylene deposited on sodium chloride films. By combining sub-molecular-resolved atomic force microscopy with redox-state-selective orbital imaging, we characterize both structural and electronical changes occurring upon hole injection. While the neutral molecule exhibits a delocalized frontier orbital, for the cationic radical the excess charge is observed to localize, inducing a partial planarization of the molecule. These results provide direct evidence for self-trapping of the excess charge in oligophenylenes, shedding light on the interplay of charge localization and structural distortion.

Abstract
We have implemented the Coupled-Cluster Equation of Motion (CC-EOM) with single and double excitations coupled with semiempirical parameterizations, Pariser–Parr–Pople model and INDO Hamiltonians, to investigate the optical and nonlinear optical properties, electronic structures and the excited states properties for the conjugated polymers. The semiempirical parameters allow us to study the conjugated systems with extensive sizes. Firstly, by comparing with the quasi-exact Density Matrix Renormalization Group theory for the 1D conjugated chain, we find that the CC-EOM approach can give satisfactory results for both the ground state and the excited states energies. We demonstrate that our approach can be adopted to evaluate linear and nonlinear response. We find that both the real and imaginary parts of the third-order polarizability can be solved either for static and dynamic responses. Then we apply the CC-EOM approach to study the optical signatures for the polarons in conjugated polymers. We have established a solid relationship between the rigidity of a polymer and its optical signature of the polarons.

Abstract
We have developed a correction method (CV) to calculate the single- and multiphoton absorption (MPA) spectra of organic pi-conjugated systems within the equation of motion coupled-cluster method with single and double excitations (EOM-CCSD). The effects of donor/acceptor strengths on the multiphoton absorption in a series of symmetrically substituted stilbene derivatives have been reinvestigated at both the ab initio and the semiempirical intermediate neglect of differential overlap (INDO) Hamiltonian levels. Both ab initio and INDO calculations show that the electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents lead to enhancements of two- and three-photon absorption cross sections, more pronounced for two-photon absorption than for three-photon absorption. The ab initio calculations usually produce larger excitation energies than the semiempirical, which lead to lower MPA cross sections.

Abstract
By employing the coupled-cluster equation of motion method (EOM/CCSD) for excited-state structures, we have investigated the structure dependence of the singlet and triplet exciton splittings, through extensive calculations for polythiophene (PT), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), poly(thienylenevinylene) (PTV), polyparaphenylene vinylene (PPV), MEHPPV, polyparaphenylene ethylene (PPE), polyfluorene (PFO), and ladder-type polyparaphenylene (mLPPP). The results for the polymer are extrapolated through computations for the oligomers with increasing length. Recent investigations have been quite controversial about whether the internal quantum efficiency of electroluminescence could be higher than the 25% spin statistics limit or not in polymeric materials. Using a simple relationship between the exciton formation rate and the excitation energy level, we have discussed the material-dependent ratios of singlet and triplet exciton formation, which are in good agreement with the magnetic-field resonance detected transient spectroscopy measurement by Wohlgenannt et al. for a series of electronic polymers. This provides another piece of evidence to support the view that the internal quantum efficiency for conjugated polymers can exceed the 25% limit.

Abstract
The electronic structure and optical properties of charged oligofluorenes were studied experimentally and theoretically. Measurements of the optical absorption spectra of charged oligofluorenes in dilute solutions have been performed by using the pulse radiolysis technique. In addition, optical absorption spectra of radical cations and anions in a solid matrix were measured after gamma-irradiation at 77 K. The optical absorption spectra were measured in the range of 440-2100 nm (0.6-2.8 eV) and compared with results from time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations. The calculated charge induced deformations and charge distribution do not indicate the occurrence of polaronic effects. The potential energy profiles for rotation around the inter-unit bond show that oligofluorenes are nonplanar in their neutral state, while they tend to more planar structures in their charged state. The optical absorption spectra of charged oligofluorenes are dependent on the angle between neighboring units. TDDFT absorption energies shift to lower values with increasing chain length, which suggests that the charge delocalizes along the oligomer chain.

Abstract
We report on a quantum-chemical study of the electronic and optical properties of unsubstituted oligo(phenylene vinylene) (OPV) radical cations. Our goal is to distinguish the impact of the choice of molecular geometry from the impact of the choice of quantum-chemical method, on the calculated optical transition energies. The geometry modifications upon ionization of the OPV chains are found to depend critically on the theoretical formalism: Hartree-Fock (HF) geometry optimizations lead to self-localization of the charged defects while pure density functional theory (DFT) results in a complete delocalization of the geometric modifications over the whole conjugated backbone. The electronic structure and vertical transition energy associated with the lowest excited state of the radical cations have been calculated at the post-Hartree-Fock level within a configuration interaction (HF-CI) scheme and using the time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) formalism for different radical cation geometries. Interestingly, the changes in the calculated optical properties obtained when using different geometric structures are less important within a given method than the differences between methods for a given structure. The optical excitation is localized with HF-CI and delocalized with TD-DFT, almost irrespective of the molecular geometry; as a result, HF-CI excitation energies tend to saturate as the chain length increases, in contrast to the results from TD-DFT.

Abstract
One serious problem associated with polyfluorene and derivatives (PFs) as blue luminescent polymers is the significant energy barrier for hole or electron injections; thus they usually face charge injection and transport difficulties with the currently available cathode and anode materials. The incorporation of an electron-donating or -accepting unit is expected to improve the recombination of the charge carriers. In this paper, we apply quantum-chemical techniques to investigate three fluorene-based copolymers, copoly(2,5-ethylenedioxythiophene-alt-9,9'-dimethylfluorene) (PEF), copoly(2,5-pyridine-alt-9,9'-dimethylfluorene) (PPyF), and poly[(fluorene-2,7-diyl)-alt-(1,3,4-oxadiazole-2,5-diyl)] (PFO), in which Delta(H)(-)(L) [the energy difference between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), when n = infinity], the lowest excitation energies (E(g)), ionization potentials (IP), electron affinities (EA), and lambda(abs) and lambda(em) are fine-tuned by the regular insertion of electron-donating unit 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) or electron-withdrawing units pyridine and 1,3,4-oxadiazole. The results show that the alternate incorporation of electron-donating moiety EDOT increases the HOMO energy and thus reduces the IPs, and consequently the hole injection was greatly improved. On the other hand, even though both kinds of charge carriers will improve the electron-accepting ability, the results show that electron-withdrawing moieties greatly facilitate the electron-transporting. Especially in PFO, the highly planar structural character resulted from the strong push-pull effect between the fluorene ring and the 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring and a weak interaction between the nitrogen and oxygen atoms in 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring and the hydrogen atom of the fluorene ring, significantly lowering the LUMO energy levels and thus improve the electron-accepting and transporting properties by the low LUMO energy levels.

Abstract
A quantum chemical study of the electronic structure of negatively charged phenylenevinylene (PV) oligomers and methoxy-substituted derivatives is presented. The geometries of the PV oligomers were optimized using density functional theory. The geometry deformations are found to be delocalized along the entire oligomer chain without indication of polaron formation. The optical absorption spectra of the negatively charged PVs were calculated using both time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and the singly excited configuration interaction method with an intermediate neglect of differential overlap reference wave function (INDO/s-CIS). The available experimental optical absorption energies are reproduced by the calculations. Introduction of methoxy substituents reduces the transition energies, while this does not have a strong effect on the charge distribution along the chain. DFT calculations yield a more delocalized excess negative charge than that of INDO/s-CIS calculations.
