First-principles studies on the reactions of O2 with silicon clusters

Mechanistic Study on Water Splitting Reactions by Small Silicon Clusters Si3X, X = Si, Be, Mg, Ca

Interaction, dissociation, and dehydrogenation reactions of water monomer and dimer with pure and mixed tetrameric silicon clusters Si₃X with X = Si, Be, Mg, Ca were investigated using high accuracy quantum chemical calculations. While geometries were optimized using the DFT/B3LYP functional with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set, reaction energy profiles were constructed making use of the coupled-cluster theory with extrapolation to complete basis set, CCSD(T)/CBS. Cleavage of the O-H bond in water dimer is found to be more favored than that of water monomer in the reaction with Si₄. The water acceptor monomer in water dimer performs as an internal catalyst facilitating H atom transfer to form H₂. Adsorption of water dimer on Si₃X clusters mostly takes place upon interaction of the donor water molecule with Si cluster. Water dimer adsorbs more strongly on Si₃M than on Si₄. The most stable complexes obtained upon interaction of water dimer with Si₃M mainly arise from M-O interaction in preference over a Si-O connection. Substitution of a Si atom in Si₄ by an earth alkaline metal induces a substantial reduction of the energy barrier for the (rate-limiting) first O-H bond cleavage of water dimer. The most remarkable achievement upon doping is a disappearance of the overall energy barrier for the initial O-H bond cleavage in water dimer. Of the three binary Si₃M clusters considered, dehydrogenation of water dimer driven by Si₃Be is the most kinetically and thermodynamically favorable pathway. In comparison to another cluster such as Al₆ and nanoparticles Ru₅₅, energy barriers for water dimer dissociation on Si₃M are much lower. The mixed clusters Si₃M turn out to be as efficient alternative reagents for O-H dissociation and hydrogen production from water dimer. This study proposes further searches for other mixed silicon clusters as realistic gas phase reagents for crucial dehydrogenation processes in such a way they can be prepared and conducted in experiment.

Mechanically induced generation of highly reactive excited-state oxygen molecules in cluster scattering

Molecular electronic excitation in (O(2))(n) clusters induced by mechanical collisions via the "chemistry with a hammer" is investigated by a combination of molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemistry calculations. Complete active space self-consistent field augmented with triple-zeta polarizable basis set quantum chemistry calculations of a compressed (O(2))(2) cluster model in various configurations reveal the emergence of possible pathways for the generation of electronically excited singlet O(2) molecules upon cluster compression and vibrational excitation, due to electronic curve-crossing and spin-orbit coupling. Extrapolation of the model (O(2))(2) results to larger clusters suggests a dramatic increase in the population of electronically excited O(2) products, and may account for the recently observed cluster-catalyzed oxidation of silicon surfaces, via singlet oxygen generation induced by cluster impact, followed by surface reaction of highly reactive singlet O(2) molecules. Extensive molecular dynamics simulations of (O(2))(n) clusters colliding onto a hot surface indeed reveal that cluster compression is sufficient under typical experimental conditions for nonadiabatic transitions to occur. This work highlights the importance of nonadiabatic effects in the "chemistry with a hammer."

Theoretical study of the adsorption of H on Sin clusters, (n=3–10)

A recently proposed local Fukui function is used to predict the binding site of atomic hydrogen on silicon clusters. To validate the predictions, an extensive search for the more stable SinH (n=3-10) clusters has been done using a modified genetic algorithm. In all cases, the isomer predicted by the Fukui function is found by the search, but it is not always the most stable one. It is discussed that in the cases where the geometrical structure of the bare silicon cluster suffers a considerable change due to the addition of one hydrogen atom, the situation is more complicated and the relaxation effects should be considered.
