Calculation of the birefringences of nematic liquid crystals at optical and infrared wavelengths

Hyper-Rayleigh scattering from correlated molecules

The polarization dependence of hyper-Rayleigh scattering has been calculated for spherical domains of orientation correlated molecules. Distributions with radial or azimuthal mean polar orientation of the molecules are found that give results consistent with experimental observations, and expressions for the polarization ratios in terms of the product of correlation strength and correlated domain size are derived for these distributions. Assuming a plausible correlation strength, it is estimated that the correlated domain size in typical polar liquids is of order 100 molecular diameters.

Optical switch of diffractive light from a BCT photonic crystal based on HPDLC doped with azo component

This study demonstrates an optical switch of the diffractive light from a body-centered tetragonal photonic crystal based on holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals that are fabricated using two-beam interference with multiple exposures. The liquid crystal-rich regions form the lattice points of the PC, which contains a liquid crystal/azo-dye mixture. The concentration of the cis isomer changes under laser light exposure; this change, in turn, modulates the effective index of the LCs, and then switches diffractive light.

Orientational order in liquid crystals exhibited by some binary mixtures of rod-like and bent-core molecules

We report measurements of the temperature variations of the optical birefringence in the nematic (N) and partial bilayer SmA (SmA(d)) phases in 4-n-octyloxy 4(')-cyanobiphenyl made of rod-like (R) molecules and five mixtures of this compound with 1,3-phenylene bis[4-(3-methylbenzoyloxy)] 4(')-n-dodecylbiphenyl 4(')-carboxylate, made of bent-core (BC) molecules. The birefringence decreases with the concentration x of the BC molecules but the macroscopic order parameter initially decreases upto 11 mol% of BC molecules and subsequently increases with x. This is attributed to the possible formation of polar clusters of BC molecules. Orientation of BC molecules changes between the N and SmA(d) phases and the birefringence data in the two phases imply that the kink angle of the BC molecules is approximately 90 degrees rather than approximately 110 degrees as obtained from calculations which minimize the energy of the molecule. IR spectroscopic measurements on the mixture with 11 mol% of BC molecules have been used to estimate the molecular order parameter S of the R molecules, and to provide additional support for a relatively small kink angle of BC molecules.

Influence of dye molecules on the birefringence of liquid crystal mixtures at near infrared frequencies

The optical properties of nematic liquid crystals have been extensively exploited in the production of devices working in the visible range of the spectrum. These same properties can be employed to make devices that function in the near infrared as required for telecommunications applications. However, it is generally observed that the birefringence of liquid crystal mixtures decreases with increasing wavelength, making it important to identify new materials, optimized for use in the near infrared region. One route to high birefringence is to operate close to an absorption band edge, which in the present context implies choosing highly conjugated materials which are potentially colored and, thus, not suited to traditional display applications. In this paper we explore the usefulness of dye molecules as birefringence enhancers in mixtures with conventional nematic liquid crystals. The optical properties, in particular, the absorption edge, polarizability, and birefringence, of families of known dyes are calculated at optical (589 nm) and infrared (1550 nm) wavelengths, using electronic density functional theory. We demonstrate the expected correlation between the proximity of the absorption edge and the magnitude of the birefringence, and estimate the birefringence enhancement occurring when each dye is incorporated in a guest-host system.
