Characteristics of a tapered undulator for the X-ray absorption fine-structure technique at PLS-II

An in-vacuum undulator (IVU) with a tapered configuration was installed in the 8C nanoprobe/XAFS beamlime (BL8C) of the Pohang Light Source in Korea for hard X-ray nanoprobe and X-ray absorption fine-structure (XAFS) experiments. It has been operated in planar mode for the nanoprobe experiments, while gap-scan and tapered modes have been used alternatively for XAFS experiments. To examine the features of the BL8C IVU for XAFS experiments, spectral distributions were obtained theoretically and experimentally as functions of the gap and gap taper. Beam profiles at a cross section of the X-ray beam were acquired using a slit to visualize the intensity distributions which depend on the gap, degree of tapering and harmonic energies. To demonstrate the effect of tapering around the lower limit of the third-harmonic energy, V K-edge XAFS spectra were obtained in each mode. Owing to the large X-ray intensity variation around this energy, XAFS spectra of the planar and gap-scan modes show considerable spectral distortions in comparison with the tapered mode. This indicates that the tapered mode, owing to the smooth X-ray intensity profile at the expense of the highest and most stable intensity, can be an alternative for XAFS experiments where the gap-scan mode gives a considerable intensity variation; it is also suitable for quick-XAFS scanning.

In situ time-resolved XAFS studies of metal particle formation by photoreduction in polymer solutions

Formation mechanisms of metal particles (rhodium (Rh) and palladium (Pd) particles) in an aqueous ethanol solution of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) by photoreduction were investigated by UV-vis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and in situ X-ray absorption fine structure (in situ XAFS). The average diameter of the Rh and Pd particles prepared by the photoreduction was estimated from TEM to be 2.2 and 2.0 nm, respectively. In situ energy-dispersive XAFS (in situ DXAFS) measurements were performed to investigate the reduction process of Rh(III) and Pd(II) aqua chlorocomplexes as well as their particle formation process. The reduction rate of these aqua chlorocomplexes could be quantitatively evaluated from the change of X-ray absorbance assigned to the contribution of metal-chloride bonds in these complexes. The reduction rate of Rh(III) aqua chlorocomplexes was found to be slower than that of Pd(II). It was also demonstrated that the reduction process of Rh(III) complexes possessed an induction period before the onset of Rh particle formation, although the Pd(II) complexes displayed no induction period, since the reduction of Pd(II) occurred immediately after mixing of an ethanol solution of Pd(II) complexes with aqueous PVP solutions.

Insulator-metal phase transition of Pr(0.6)Ca(0.4)MnO(3) studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy in pulsed magnetic fields

Evolution of the Mn K-edge x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) in Pr(0.6)Ca(0.4)MnO(3) at pulsed magnetic fields has been investigated. A small enhancement of XANES spectra is detected across the magnetic-field-induced transition from the charge- and orbital-ordered (COO) insulator to ferromagnetic metal at 20 K. It is found that the magnetic-field dependence of the enhancement shows clear hysteresis, as seen in the magnetization with metamagnetic transition, suggesting a significant correlation between the change in the XANES and the field-induced collapse of the COO state. The enhancement of the absorption can be explained by an increase of the 4p density of states due to a reduction of hybridization between the 4p state of the central Mn ion with the core hole and the neighboring Mn 3d state. Local structural change around Mn ions is expected to modify the strength of the hybridization.
