Fiber-based confocal microscope for cryogenic spectroscopy

Mechanical Mode Imaging of a High-Q Hybrid hBN/Si3N4 Resonator

We image and characterize the mechanical modes of a 2D drum resonator made of hBN suspended over a high-stress Si₃N₄ membrane. Our measurements demonstrate hybridization between various modes of the hBN resonator and those of the Si₃N₄ membrane. The measured resonance frequencies and spatial profiles of the modes are consistent with finite-element simulations based on idealized geometry. Spectra of the thermal motion reveal that, depending on the degree of hybridization with modes of the heavier and higher-quality-factor Si₃N₄ membrane, the quality factors and the motional mass of the hBN drum modes can be shifted by orders of magnitude. This effect could be exploited to engineer hybrid drum/membrane modes that combine the low motional mass of 2D materials with the high quality factor of Si₃N₄ membranes for optomechanical or sensing applications.

Magnetic Force Sensing Using a Self-Assembled Nanowire

We present a scanning magnetic force sensor based on an individual magnet-tipped GaAs nanowire (NW) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Its magnetic tip consists of a final segment of single-crystal MnAs formed by sequential crystallization of the liquid Ga catalyst droplet. We characterize the mechanical and magnetic properties of such NWs by measuring their flexural mechanical response in an applied magnetic field. Comparison with numerical simulations allows the identification of their equilibrium magnetization configurations, which in some cases include magnetic vortices. To determine a NW's performance as a magnetic scanning probe, we measure its response to the field profile of a lithographically patterned current-carrying wire. The NWs' tiny tips and their high force sensitivity make them promising for imaging weak magnetic field patterns on the nanometer-scale, as required for mapping mesoscopic transport and spin textures or in nanometer-scale magnetic resonance.

A confocal optical microscope for detection of single impurities in a bulk crystal at cryogenic temperatures

A compact sample-scanning confocal optical microscope for detection of single impurities below the surface of a bulk crystal at cryogenic temperatures is described. The sample, lens, and scanners are mounted inside a helium bath cryostat and have a footprint of only 19 × 19 mm. Wide field imaging and confocal imaging using a Blu-ray lens immersed in liquid helium are demonstrated with excitation at 370 nm. A spatial resolution of 300 nm and a detection efficiency of 1.6% were achieved.

Quantum Confinement Regimes in CdTe Nanocrystals Probed by Single Dot Spectroscopy: From Strong Confinement to the Bulk Limit

Sufficiently large semiconductor nanocrystals are a useful model system to characterize bulk-like excitons, with the electron and hole bound predominantly by Coulomb interaction. We present optical characterization of excitons in individual giant CdTe nanocrystals with diameters up to 25.5 nm at 4.2 K under varying excitation power and magnetic field strength. We determine values for the biexciton binding energy, diamagnetic shift constant, and Landé g-factor, which approach the bulk values with increasing nanocrystal size.

Breaking of valley degeneracy by magnetic field in monolayer MoSe2

Using polarization-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy, we investigate the breaking of valley degeneracy by an out-of-plane magnetic field in back-gated monolayer MoSe2 devices. We observe a linear splitting of -0.22  meV/T between luminescence peak energies in σ+ and σ- emission for both neutral and charged excitons. The optical selection rules of monolayer MoSe2 couple the photon handedness to the exciton valley degree of freedom; so this splitting demonstrates valley degeneracy breaking. In addition, we find that the luminescence handedness can be controlled with a magnetic field to a degree that depends on the back-gate voltage. An applied magnetic field, therefore, provides effective strategies for control over the valley degree of freedom.

Quantum dot opto-mechanics in a fully self-assembled nanowire

We show that optically active quantum dots (QDs) embedded in MBE-grown GaAs/AlGaAs core-shell nanowires (NWs) are coupled to the NW mechanical motion. Oscillations of the NW modulate the QD emission energy in a broad range exceeding 14 meV. Furthermore, this opto-mechanical interaction enables the dynamical tuning of two neighboring QDs into resonance, possibly allowing for emitter-emitter coupling. Both the QDs and the coupling mechanism, i.e. material strain, are intrinsic to the NW structure and do not depend on any functionalization or external field. Such systems open up the prospect of using QDs to probe and control the mechanical state of a NW, or conversely of making a quantum nondemolition readout of a QD state through a position measurement.

A fiber-optic system for dual-modality photoacoustic microscopy and confocal fluorescence microscopy using miniature components

Imaging of the cells and microvasculature simultaneously is beneficial to the study of tumor angiogenesis and microenvironments. We designed and built a fiber-optic based photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) and confocal fluorescence microscopy (CFM) dual-modality imaging system. To explore the feasibility of this all-optical device for future endoscopic applications, a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) scanner, a miniature objective lens, and a small size optical microring resonator as an acoustic detector were employed trying to meet the requirements of miniaturization. Both the lateral resolutions of PAM and CFM were quantified to be 8.8 μm. Axial resolutions of PAM and CFM were experimentally measured to be 19 μm and 53 μm, respectively. The experiments on ex vivo animal bladder tissues demonstrate the good performance of this system in imaging not only microvasculature but also cellular structure, suggesting that this novel imaging technique holds potential for improved diagnosis and guided treatment of bladder cancer.

Confocal sample-scanning microscope for single-molecule spectroscopy and microscopy with fast sample exchange at cryogenic temperatures

The construction of a microscope with fast sample transfer system for single-molecule spectroscopy and microscopy at low temperatures using 2D/3D sample-scanning is reported. The presented construction enables the insertion of a sample from the outside (room temperature) into the cooled (4.2 K) cryostat within seconds. We describe the mechanical and optical design and present data from individual Photosystem I complexes. With the described setup numerous samples can be investigated within one cooling cycle. It opens the possibility to investigate biological samples (i) without artifacts introduced by prolonged cooling procedures and (ii) samples that require preparation steps like plunge-freezing or specific illumination procedures prior to the insertion into the cryostat.

Scanning Fabry-Pérot interferometer with largely tuneable free spectral range for high resolution spectroscopy of single quantum dots

We report on the implementation of a scanning Fabry-Pérot interferometer for photoluminescence spectroscopy investigation. We choose a conveniently small reflectivity of the two planar semitransparent mirrors which, in spite of a moderate cavity finesse, ensures a good mechanical stability over a long time. We also exploit the large tuneability of the cavity length (i.e., of the free spectral range) for changing the spectral resolution over two order of magnitude (from ~300 μeV to ~4 μeV in full width at half maximum). Such a characteristic easily allows to scan both sharp and broad luminescence bands. We test our Fabry-Pérot interferometer on sharp photoluminescence lines resulting from excitonic recombination in self-assembled GaAs quantum dots. We demonstrate the ability of our system to resolve linewidth as small as 4 μeV.

Micromirror arrays to assess luminescent nano-objects

We propose an array of submicrometer mirrors to assess luminescent nano-objects. Micromirror arrays (MMAs) are fabricated on Si (001) wafers via selectively doping Ga using the focused ion beam technique to form p-type etch stop regions, subsequent anisotropic chemical etching, and Al deposition. MMAs provide two benefits: reflection of luminescence from nano-objects within MMAs toward the Si (001) surface normal and nano-object labeling. The former increases the probability of optics collecting luminescence and is demonstrated by simulations based on the ray-tracing and finite-difference time-domain methods as well as by experiments. The latter enables different measurements to be repeatedly performed on a single nano-object located at a certain micromirror. For example, a single InGaN∕GaN nanocolumn is assessed by scanning electron microscopy and microphotoluminescence spectroscopy.

Polarization-preserving confocal microscope for optical experiments in a dilution refrigerator with high magnetic field

We present the design and operation of a fiber-based cryogenic confocal microscope. It is designed as a compact cold-finger that fits inside the bore of a superconducting magnet, and which is a modular unit that can be easily swapped between use in a dilution refrigerator and other cryostats. We aimed at application in quantum optical experiments with electron spins in semiconductors and the design has been optimized for driving with and detection of optical fields with well-defined polarizations. This was implemented with optical access via a polarization maintaining fiber together with Voigt geometry at the cold finger, which circumvents Faraday rotations in the optical components in high magnetic fields. Our unit is versatile for use in experiments that measure photoluminescence, reflection, or transmission, as we demonstrate with a quantum optical experiment with an ensemble of donor-bound electrons in a thin GaAs film.

A high stability beam-scanning confocal optical microscope for low temperature operation

We report on the design and performance of a high stability scanning confocal microscope for optical microscopy at low temperatures. By scanning the beam in a cold objective lens system, we achieve wide fields of view without compromising image quality. Photoluminescence from single nitrogen-vacancy centers in high purity diamond is used to illustrate the imaging and stability performance of the microscope.

Wide spectral range confocal microscope based on endlessly single-mode fiber

We report an endlessly single mode, fiber-optic confocal microscope, based on a large mode area photonic crystal fiber. The microscope confines a very broad spectral range of excitation and emission wavelengths to a single spatial mode in the fiber. Single-mode operation over an optical octave is feasible. At a magnification of 10 and λ = 900 nm, its resolution was measured to be 1.0 μm (lateral) and 2.5 μm (axial). The microscope's use is demonstrated by imaging single photons emitted by individual InAs quantum dots in a pillar microcavity.

Cryogenic confocal microscopy with rotation in a magnetic field

Two approaches to conducting magneto-optical confocal spectroscopy are described, in each of which the confocal head is rotatable with respect to the magnetic field. A coudé arrangement has been shown to give adequate performance for scanned imaging, but lower optical throughput than a system based on single-mode optical fiber transport. The design criteria for a cryogenic fiber-coupling objective are described, and the tolerances demanded in lens alignment are shown to be relatively benign, allowing manufacture without special techniques. The practical use of the rotating confocal system with commercial stick-slip positioners has been shown to be rigid enough, and asymmetric weight distribution and diamagnetic forces are small enough to permit single quantum emitters to be studied over a range of angles and field strengths.

Compact cryogenic Kerr microscope for time-resolved studies of electron spin transport in microstructures

A compact cryogenic Kerr microscope for operation in the small volume of high-field magnets is described. It is suited for measurements both in Voigt and Faraday configurations. Coupled with a pulsed laser source, the microscope is used to measure the time-resolved Kerr rotation response of semiconductor microstructures with approximately 1 mum spatial resolution. The microscope was designed to study spin transport, a critical issue in the field of spintronics. It is thus possible to generate spin polarization at a given location on a microstructure and probe it at a different location. The operation of the microscope is demonstrated by time-resolved measurements of micrometer distance diffusion of spin polarized electrons in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction quantum well at 4.2 K and 7 T.
