Size- and charge-dependent geometric and electronic structures of Bin (Bin−) clusters (n=2–13) by first-principles simulations

The s-p Nonhybrid Nature Causes Adaptive Superatomic States of Bismuth Clusters

We report a joint experimental and theoretical study on the stability and reactivity of Bin + (n=5-33) clusters. The alternating odd-even effect on the reaction rates of Bin + clusters with NO is observed, and Bi7 + finds the most inertness. First-principles calculation results reveal that the lowest energy structures of Bi6-9 + exhibit quasi-spherical geometry pertaining to the jellium shell model; however, the Bin + (n≥10) clusters adopt assembly structures. The prominent stability of Bi7 + is associated with its highly symmetric structure and superatomic states with a magic number of 34e closed shell. For the first time, we demonstrate that the unique s-p nonhybrid feature in bismuth rationalizes the stability of Bi6-9 + clusters within the jellium model, by filling the 6s electrons into the superatomic orbitals (forming "s-band"). Interestingly, the stability of 18e "s-band" coincides with the compact structure for Bin + at n≤9 but assembly structures for n≥10, showing an accommodation of the s electrons to the geometric structure. The atomic p-orbitals also allow to form superatomic orbitals at higher energy levels, contributing to the preferable structures of tridentate binding units. We illustrate the s-p nonhybrid nature accommodates the structure and superatomic states of bismuth clusters.

Clustering of metal dopants in defect sites of graphene-based materials

Single-atom catalysts are promising candidates for many industrial reactions. However, making true single-atom catalysts is an experimental dilemma, due to the difficulty of keeping dopant single atoms stable at temperature and under pressure. This difficulty can lead to clustering of the metal dopant atoms in defect sites. However, the electronic and geometric structure of sub-nanoscale clusters in single-atom defects has not yet been explored. Furthermore, recent studies have proven sub-nanoscale clusters of dopants in single-atom defect sites can be equally good or better catalysts than their single-atom counterparts. Here, a comprehensive DFT study is undertaken to determine the geometric and electronic structure effects that influence clustering of noble and p-block dopants in C₃- and N₄-defect sites in graphene-based systems. We find that the defect site is the primary driver in determining clustering dynamics in these systems.

Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy of heteronuclear group 15 metal-iron carbonyl cluster anions AmFe(CO)n- (A = Sb, Bi; m, n = 2, 3)

Heteronuclear group 15 metal-iron carbonyl cluster complexes of A_mFe(CO)_n^- (A = Sb, Bi; m, n = 2-3) were generated in the gas phase and studied by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the carbonyl stretching region. Their structures were determined by comparing the experimental spectra with predicted spectra derived from DFT calculations at the B3LYP and BP86 levels. All of the A_mFe(CO)_n^- cluster anions were determined to have Fe(CO)_n^- fragments with all of the CO ligands terminally bonded to the iron center, and they can be regarded as being formed via the interactions of the neutral group 15 metal clusters with the Fe(CO)_n^- fragments. Bonding analyses indicated that each A₂Fe(CO)_n^- (n = 2, 3) cluster anion contained two A-Fe single bonds and one A-A double bond. Each A₃Fe(CO)_n^- (n = 2, 3) cluster anion involved three A-Fe single bonds and three A-A single bonds. There is an isolobal relationship between the Fe(CO)₃^- group and the group 15 atoms. The substitution of an Fe(CO)₃^- group in place of one A atom in the tetrahedral A₄ molecule resulted in an A₃Fe(CO)₃^- cluster anion with the closed-shell electronic configuration for all the group 15 metals and iron atoms.

The bismuth tetramer Bi4: the ν3 key to experimental observation

The spectroscopic identification of Bi₄ has been very elusive. Two constitutional Bi₄ isomers of T_d and C_2v symmetry are investigated and each is found to be a local energetic minimum.

Deep melting reveals liquid structural memory and anomalous ferromagnetism in bismuth

As an archetypal semimetal with complex and anisotropic Fermi surface and unusual electric properties (e.g., high electrical resistance, large magnetoresistance, and giant Hall effect), bismuth (Bi) has played a critical role in metal physics. In general, Bi displays diamagnetism with a high volumetric susceptibility ([Formula: see text]10^-4). Here, we report unusual ferromagnetism in bulk Bi samples recovered from a molten state at pressures of 1.4-2.5 GPa and temperatures above [Formula: see text]1,250 K. The ferromagnetism is associated with a surprising structural memory effect in the molten state. On heating, low-temperature Bi liquid (L) transforms to a more randomly disordered high-temperature liquid (L') around 1,250 K. By cooling from above 1,250 K, certain structural characteristics of liquid L' are preserved in L. Bi clusters with characteristics of the liquid L' motifs are further preserved through solidification into the Bi-II phase across the pressure-independent melting curve, which may be responsible for the observed ferromagnetism.

Reactivity Indexes of Fullerene and Bismullene Mixed Clusters: How the Intruders Modify the Properties

In this investigation, the feasibility of functionalizing fullerene and bismullene with Bi and C as intruders is theoretically explored. The systems analyzed are C_60-xBi_x (with x = 0-10, fullerene-like) and Bi_60-yC_y (with y = 0-10, bismullene-like). Optimized geometries, reactivity indexes, and highest occupied molecular orbital to lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) gaps (for analyzing the potential application of these molecules as materials for solar cells) are reported. The most stable structures of bismullene-like systems have cage geometries. The most stable fullerene-like geometries resemble a cup with bismuth atoms at the edge of the bowl. The presence of intruders increases the electron acceptor power and decreases the electron donor power in most cases. HOMO-LUMO gaps indicate that bismullene-like clusters represent better candidates for building solar cells than fullerene-like clusters. This information could be useful for future experiments.
