Abstract
Benchmark results are presented for the second-order approximation of the internally contracted multireference coupled-cluster method with single and double excitations, icMRCC2 [Köhn, Bargholz, J. Chem. Phys. 2019, 151, 041106], which was designed as a multireference analogue of the single-reference second-order approximate coupled-cluster method CC2 [Christiansen, Koch, Jørgensen, Chem. Phys. Lett. 1995, 243, 409-418]. Vertical excitation energies of various small to medium-sized organic molecules are investigated based on established test sets from the literature. Additionally, the spectroscopic constants of ground and excited states of diatomics and the geometric parameters of excited triatomic molecules were determined and compared to the experimental data. The results show that the method clearly extends the applicability of single-reference CC2, including doubly excited states, and also artifacts of CC2 like too low Rydberg excitations and too weak multiple bonds are eliminated. The method is computationally more demanding than standard multireference second-order perturbation theories but improves significantly in accuracy, as shown by the benchmark results. In addition, it is demonstrated that small active spaces are often sufficient to obtain accurate energies with icMRCC2. Example applications like the automerization of cyclobutadiene, the deactivation pathway of ethylene, and the excited states of an iron complex with a noninnocent nitrosyl ligand demonstrate the potential of icMRCC2 in cases with strong multireference character.

Abstract
Tailored coupled cluster theory represents a computationally inexpensive way to describe static and dynamical electron correlation effects. In this work, we scrutinize the performance of various coupled cluster methods tailored by electronic wave functions of polynomial cost. Specifically, we focus on frozen-pair coupled cluster (fpCC) methods, which are tailored by pair-coupled cluster doubles (pCCD), and coupled cluster theory tailored by matrix product state wave functions optimized by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. As test system, we selected a set of various small- and medium-sized molecules containing diatomics (N2, F2, C2, CN+, CO, BN, BO+, and Cr2) and molecules (ammonia, ethylene, cyclobutadiene, benzene, hydrogen chains, rings, and cuboids) for which the conventional single-reference coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) method is not able to produce accurate results for spectroscopic constants, potential energy surfaces, and barrier heights. Most importantly, DMRG-tailored and pCCD-tailored approaches yield similar errors in spectroscopic constants and potential energy surfaces compared to accurate theoretical and/or experimental reference data. Although fpCC methods provide a reliable description for the dissociation pathway of molecules featuring single and quadruple bonds, they fail in the description of triple or hextuple bond-breaking processes or avoided crossing regions.

Abstract
Inspired by our earlier semi-stochastic work aimed at converging high-level coupled-cluster (CC) energetics [J. E. Deustua, J. Shen, and P. Piecuch, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 223003 (2017) and J. E. Deustua, J. Shen, and P. Piecuch, J. Chem. Phys. 154, 124103 (2021)], we propose a novel form of the CC(P; Q) theory in which the stochastic Quantum Monte Carlo propagations, used to identify dominant higher-than-doubly excited determinants, are replaced by the selected configuration interaction (CI) approach using the perturbative selection made iteratively (CIPSI) algorithm. The advantages of the resulting CIPSI-driven CC(P; Q) methodology are illustrated by a few molecular examples, including the dissociation of F2 and the automerization of cyclobutadiene, where we recover the electronic energies corresponding to the CC calculations with a full treatment of singles, doubles, and triples based on the information extracted from compact CI wave functions originating from relatively inexpensive Hamiltonian diagonalizations.

Abstract
We explore different ways of incorporating accurate trial wave functions into free projection auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (fp-AFQMC). States employed include coupled-cluster singles and doubles, multi-Slater, and symmetry-projected mean-field wave functions. We adapt a recently proposed fast multi-Slater local energy evaluation algorithm for fp-AFQMC, making the use of long expansions from selected configuration interaction methods feasible. We demonstrate how these wave functions serve to mitigate the sign problem and accelerate convergence in quantum chemical problems, allowing the application of fp-AFQMC to systems of substantial sizes. Our calculations on the widely studied model Cu2O22+ system show that many previously reported isomerization energies differ substantially from the near-exact fp-AFQMC value.

Abstract
We recently proposed a novel approach to converging electronic energies equivalent to high-level coupled-cluster (CC) computations by combining the deterministic CC(P;Q) formalism with the stochastic configuration interaction (CI) and CC Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) propagations. This article extends our initial study [J. E. Deustua, J. Shen, and P. Piecuch, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 223003 (2017)], which focused on recovering the energies obtained with the CC method with singles, doubles, and triples (CCSDT) using the information extracted from full CI QMC and CCSDT-MC, to the CIQMC approaches truncated at triples and quadruples. It also reports our first semi-stochastic CC(P;Q) calculations aimed at converging the energies that correspond to the CC method with singles, doubles, triples, and quadruples (CCSDTQ). The ability of the semi-stochastic CC(P;Q) formalism to recover the CCSDT and CCSDTQ energies, even when electronic quasi-degeneracies and triply and quadruply excited clusters become substantial, is illustrated by a few numerical examples, including the F-F bond breaking in F2, the automerization of cyclobutadiene, and the double dissociation of the water molecule.

Abstract
The tailored approach is applied to the distinguishable cluster method together with a stochastic FCI solver (FCIQMC). It is demonstrated that the new method is more accurate than the corresponding tailored coupled cluster and the pure distinguishable cluster methods. An F12 correction for tailored methods and FCIQMC is introduced, which drastically improves the basis set convergence. A new black-box approach to define the active space using the natural orbitals from the distinguishable cluster is evaluated and found to be a convenient alternative to the usual CASSCF approach.

Abstract
Radical-radical abstractions in hydrocarbon oxidation chemistry are disproportionation reactions that are generally exothermic with little or no barrier yet are underappreciated and poorly studied. Such challenging multireference electronic structure problems are tackled here using the recently developed state-specific multireference coupled cluster methods Mk-MRCCSD and Mk-MRCCSD(T), as well as the companion perturbation theory Mk-MRPT2 and the established MRCISD, MRCISD+Q, and CASPT2 approaches. Reaction paths are investigated for five prototypes involving radical-radical hydrogen abstraction: H + BeH → H2+ Be, H + NH2 → H2 + NH, CH3 + C2H5 → CH4 + C2H4, H + C2H5 → H2 + C2H4, and H + HCO → H2 + CO. Full configuration interaction (FCI) benchmark computations for the H + BeH, H + NH2, and H + HCO reactions prove that Mk-MRCCSD(T) provides superior accuracy for the interaction energies in the entrance channel, with mean absolute errors less than 0.3 kcal mol-1 and percentage deviations less than 10% over the fragment separations of relevance to kinetics. To facilitate combustion studies, energetics for the CH3 + C2H5, H + C2H5, and H + HCO reactions were computed at each level of theory with correlation-consistent basis sets (cc-pVXZ, X = T, Q, 5) and extrapolated to the complete basis set (CBS) limit. These CBS energies were coupled with CASPT2 projected vibrational frequencies along a minimum energy path to obtain rate constants for these three reactions. The rigorous Mk-MRCCSD(T)/CBS results demonstrate unequivocally that these three reactions proceed with no barrier in the entrance channel, contrary to some earlier predictions. Mk-MRCCSD(T) also reveals that the economical CASPT2 method performs well for large interfragment separations but may deteriorate substantially at shorter distances.

Abstract
This study examines several techniques to improve the efficiency of the linearized multireference driven similarity renormalization group truncated to one- and two-body operators [MR-LDSRG(2)]. We propose a sequential MR-LDSRG(2) [sq-MR-LDSRG(2)] scheme, in which one-body substitutions are folded exactly into the Hamiltonian. This new approach is combined with density fitting (DF) to reduce the storage cost of two-electron integrals. To further avoid storage of large four-index intermediates, we propose a noninteracting virtual orbital (NIVO) approximation of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff series that neglects commutators terms with three and four virtual indices. The NIVO approximation reduces the computational prefactor of the MR-LDSRG(2), bringing it closer to that of coupled cluster with singles and doubles (CCSD). We test the effect of the DF and NIVO approximations on the MR-LDSRG(2) and sq-MR-LDSRG(2) methods by computing properties of eight diatomic molecules. The diatomic constants obtained by DF-sq-MR-LDSRG(2)+NIVO are found to be as accurate as those from the original MR-LDSRG(2) and coupled cluster theory with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples. Finally, we demonstrate that the DF-sq-MR-LDSRG(2)+NIVO scheme can be applied to chemical systems with more than 550 basis functions by computing the automerization energy of cyclobutadiene with a quintuple-ζ basis set. The predicted automerization energy is found to be similar to the value computed with Mukherjee's state-specific multireference coupled cluster theory with singles and doubles.

Abstract
In this article we report an implementation of the perturbative triples correction to Mukherjee's state-specific multireference coupled cluster method based on the domain-based pair natural orbital approach (DLPNO-MkCC). We tested the performance of DLPNO-MkCCSD(T) in calculations involving tetramethyleneethane and isomers of naphthynes. These tests show that more than 97% of triples energy was recovered with respect to the canonical MkCCSD(T) method, which together with the DLPNO-MkCCSD part accounts for about 99.70-99.85% of the total correlation energy. The applicability of the method was demonstrated on calculations of singlet-triplet gaps for several large systems: triangulene, dynemicin A, and a beryllium complex.

Abstract
Recently, we introduced an orbital-invariant approximate coupled-cluster (CC) method in the spin-projection manifold. The multi-determinantal property of spin-projection means that the parametrization in the spin-extended CC (ECC) ansatz is nonorthogonal and overcomplete. Therefore, the linear dependencies must be removed by an orthogonalization procedure to obtain meaningful solutions. Multi-reference methods often achieve this by diagonalizing a metric of the equation system, but this is not feasible with ECC because of the enormous size of the metric, a consequence of the incomplete active space of the spin-projected Hartree-Fock reference. As a result, the applicability of ECC has been limited to small benchmark systems, for which the ansatz was shown to be superior to the configuration interaction and linearized approximations. In this article, we provide a solution to this problem that completely avoids the metric diagonalization by iteratively projecting out its null-space from the working equations. As the additional computational cost required for this iterative projection is only marginal, it greatly expands the application range of ECC. We demonstrate the potential of approximate ECC by studying the complete basis set limit of F2 and transition metal complexes such as NiO, Mn2 , and [Cu2 O2 ]2+ , which have all been hindered by the prohibitively large metric size. We also identify the potential inadequacy of the molecular orbitals given by spin-projected Hartree-Fock in some cases, and propose possible solutions. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
We present an approximate treatment of spin-extended coupled-cluster (ECC) based on the spin-projection of the broken-symmetry coupled-cluster (CC) ansatz. ECC completely eliminates the spin-contamination of unrestricted CC and is therefore expected to provide better descriptions of dynamical and static correlation effects, but introduces two distinct problems. The first issue is the emergence of non-terminating amplitude equations, which are caused by the de-excitation effects inherent in symmetry projection operators. In this study, we take a minimalist approach and truncate the Taylor series of the exponential ansatz at a certain order such that the approximation safely recovers the traditional CC without spin-projection. The second issue is that the nonlinear equations of ECC become underdetermined, although consistent, yielding an infinitude of solutions. This problem arises because of the redundancies in the excitation manifold, as is common in other multi-reference approaches. We remove the linear dependencies in ECC by employing an orthogonal projection manifold. We also propose an efficient solver for our method, in which the components are usually sparse but not diagonal-dominant. It is shown that our approach is rigorously orbital-invariant and provides more accurate results than its configuration interaction and linearized CC analogues for chemical systems.

Abstract
In this work, we report an extension of our previous development of the universal state-selective (USS) multireference coupled-cluster (MRCC) formalism. It was shown [Brabec et al., J. Chem. Phys. 136, 124102 (2012)] and [Banik et al., J. Chem. Phys. 142, 114106 (2015)] that the USS(2) approach significantly improves the accuracy of Brillouin-Wigner and Mukherjee MRCC formulations, however, the numerical and storage costs associated with calculating highly excited intermediates pose a significant challenge, which can restrict the applicability of the USS(2) method. Therefore, we introduce a perturbative variant of the USS(2) approach (USS(pt)), which substantially reduces numerical overhead of the full USS(2) correction while preserving its accuracy. Since the new USS(pt) implementation calculates the triple and quadruple projections in on-the-fly manner, the memory bottleneck associated with the need of storing expensive recursive intermediates is entirely eliminated. On the example of several benchmark systems, we demonstrate accuracies of USS(pt) and USS(2) approaches and their efficiency in describing quasidegenerate electronic states. It is also shown that the USS(pt) method significantly alleviates problems associated with the lack of invariance of MRCC theories upon the rotation of active orbitals.

Abstract
As a further development of the previously introduced a posteriori Universal State-Selective (USS) corrections [K. Kowalski, J. Chem. Phys. 134, 194107 (2011); J. Brabec et al., ibid. 136, 124102 (2012)], we suggest an iterative form of the USS correction by means of correcting effective Hamiltonian matrix elements. We also formulate USS corrections via the left Bloch equations. The convergence of the USS corrections with excitation level towards the full configuration interaction (FCI) limit is also investigated. Various forms of the USS and simplified diagonal USS corrections at the singles and doubles and perturbative triple levels are numerically assessed on several model systems and on the ozone and tetramethyleneethane molecules. It is shown that the iterative USS correction can successfully replace the previously developed a posteriori Brillouin-Wigner coupled cluster size-extensivity correction, while it is not sensitive to intruder states and performs well also in other cases when the a posteriori one fails, like, e.g., for the asymmetric vibration mode of ozone.

Abstract
Spin-projected spin polarized Møller-Plesset and spin polarized coupled clusters calculations have been made to estimate the cyclobutadiene automerization, the ethylene torsion barriers in their ground state, and the gap between the singlet and triplet states of ethylene. The results have been obtained optimizing the geometries at MP4 and/or CCSD levels, by an extensive Gaussian basis set. A comparative analysis with more complex calculations, up to MP5 and CCSDTQP, together with others from the literature, have also been made, showing the efficacy of using spin-polarized wave functions as a reference wave function for Møller-Plesset and coupled clusters calculations, in such problems.

Abstract
We have employed complete active space based single root multireference coupled cluster method (the resulting method is referred to by the acronym sr-MRCC) to compute the potential energy surfaces (PESs) of some well studied "protypical model" systems for which a highly accurate and reliable database is available for comparison. As that of state-specific theory, the sr-MRCC approach focuses and correlates one state while using a multiconfigurational reference and thus it naturally avoids intruder states. The present method is structurally different from the well known state specific multireference coupled cluster (SS-MRCC) method introduced by Mahapatra et al. [Mol. Phys. 94, 157 (1998)]. As that of the SS-MRCC theory, the present method is also based on the Jeziorski-Monkhorst ansatz where a different exponential cluster operator exp(T(mu)) acts on its corresponding model function phi(mu). The final cluster finding equations contain coupling between the cluster operators for all the mu, which are mainly responsible to prove the extensivity of both the cluster amplitudes and the energy. The present sr-MRCC theory is size-extensive and size-consistent when localized orbitals are used. The systems considered here exhibit varying degrees of degeneracy at different regions of PES. The treatment of these systems via traditional effective Hamiltonian based methods suffers from divergence problems in the iterative solution of the CC equations (the issue termed as "intruder state"). The sr-MRCC results lie closer to the ones obtained by the SS-MRCC method for these systems. To judge the efficacy of the present method, we have compared our results with other previously published theoretical estimations, which clearly indicate that the present method is reliable in studying the dissociation PES of states plagued by electronic degeneracy as well as notorious intruder effects. The highly satisfactory performance of the sr-MRCC method, vis-a-vis the other sophisticated methods, in describing the lowest and the first excited singlet states of BeH(2) at points of high degeneracy is noticeable.

Abstract
We have recently suggested the CC(P;Q) methodology that can correct energies obtained in the active-space coupled-cluster (CC) or equation-of-motion (EOM) CC calculations, which recover much of the nondynamical and some dynamical electron correlation effects, for the higher-order, mostly dynamical, correlations missing in the active-space CC/EOMCC considerations. It is shown that one can greatly improve the description of biradical transition states, both in terms of the resulting energy barriers and total energies, by combining the CC approach with singles, doubles, and active-space triples, termed CCSDt, with the CC(P;Q)-style correction due to missing triple excitations defining the CC(t;3) approximation.

Abstract
We have tested the linked version of a iterative (partial) triples correction for the Jeziorski-Monkhorst ansatz based state-specific multireference coupled cluster (SS-MRCC) approach with singles and doubles (SD) excitations [abbreviated as SS-MRCCSDT-1a and SS-MRCCSDT-1a+d]. The assessments of SS-MRCCSDT-1a and SS-MRCCSDT-1a+d schemes have been performed on the ground potential energy surface (PES) of P4, Li(2),Be(2) systems which demand the MR description, and on study of the excitation energy between the ground and first excited state for P4 system. Illustrations in the isomerization of cyclobutadiene also show the power of the schemes. One of the designed features of the SS-MRCCSDT-n methods introduced here is that they do not require storage of the triples amplitudes. In the entire range of geometries, we found a definite improvement provided by SS-MRCC with SDT-1a and SDT-1a+d schemes over the standard SD one. In the nondegenerate regions of PES, the closeness of the performance of the single-reference CC to the SS-MRCC methods increases after inclusion of even partial triple excitations. Generally, the performance of the SS-MRCCSDT-1a+d approach is closer to the corresponding full configuration interaction (FCI) one than to the SS-MRCCSDT-1a specially in the degenerate geometries (as is evident from nonparallelism error). The deviation from FCI for the first excited state of the P4 model using various SS-MRCC theories with different truncation schemes obtained by converging on the second root of the effective Hamiltonian has also been reported. We also compare our results with the current generation state-of-the-art single and multireference CC calculations to envisage the usefulness of the present approach. Initial implementation indicates that the SS-MRCCSDT-n formalism can provide not only reliable excitation energies and barrier height even when used in a relatively small model space, but also offers a considerable promise in generating the entire energy surface with low nonparallelity error.
