Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in surface diffusion of interacting adsorbates

Surface diffusion of interacting adsorbates is here analyzed within the context of two fundamental phenomena of quantum dynamics, namely the quantum Zeno effect and the anti-Zeno effect. The physical implications of these effects are introduced here in a rather simple and general manner within the framework of non-selective measurements and for two (surface) temperature regimes: high and very low (including zero temperature). The quantum intermediate scattering function describing the adsorbate diffusion process is then evaluated for flat surfaces, since it is fully analytical in this case. Finally, a generalization to corrugated surfaces is also discussed. In this regard, it is found that, considering a Markovian framework and high surface temperatures, the anti-Zeno effect has already been observed, though not recognized as such.

Questions arising for future surface diffusion studies using scattering techniques--the case of benzene diffusion on graphite basal plane surfaces

This paper gives a review of recent work on benzene diffusion on graphitic carbon surfaces using neutron and helium scattering spectroscopy as well as computational modelling. Recent spin-echo spectroscopy measurements have demonstrated that benzene/graphite displays almost perfect Brownian diffusion and that it can be used as a tool to study dynamic friction. Incoherent neutron backscattering measurements, on the other hand, reveal a jump diffusion behaviour, related to the molecular rotational modes of the benzene rings. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have delivered a very detailed picture of the adsorbate dynamics. We use this review to illustrate the open questions and possible future directions of this research field.

Two-bath model for activated surface diffusion of interacting adsorbates

The diffusion and low vibrational motions of adsorbates on surfaces can be well described by a purely stochastic model, the so-called interacting single adsorbate model, for low-moderate coverages (theta < or approximately equal to 0.12). Within this model, the effects of thermal surface phonons and adsorbate-adsorbate collisions are accounted for by two uncorrelated noise functions, which arise in a natural way from a two-bath model based on a generalization of the one-bath Caldeira-Leggett Hamiltonian. As an illustration, the model is applied to the diffusion of Na atoms on a Cu(001) surface with different coverages.

Kinetic equation approach to the description of quantum surface diffusion: non-Markovian effects versus jump dynamics

We consider surface diffusion of a single particle, which performs site-to-site underbarrier hopping, fulfils intrasite motion between the ground and the first-excited states within a quantum well, and interacts with surface phonons. We obtain a chain of quantum-kinetic equations for one-particle distribution functions and nonequilibrium hopping probabilities. The generalized diffusion coefficients are derived, and the generic non-Markovian diffusion equation is written down both for the infinite lattice model and in the continuous media limit. In the latter case, the one-particle distribution function obeys the telegrapher's equation, which could give us a nonmonotonic behavior of the intermediate distribution functions at large spatial gradients. In a weak-coupling limit, if the energy of level splitting is comparable with the temperature, there are also pronounced oscillations of the generalized diffusion coefficients. The recrossing/multiple crossing phenomena, a problem of long tails of the generalized diffusion coefficients, as well as a mapping into the next- to the nearest-neighbors hopping regime, are discussed.
