4,4′-, 5,5′-, and 6,6′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridyls: The structures, phase transitions, vibrations, and methyl group tunneling of their complexes with chloranilic acid

Symmetry/Asymmetry of the NHN Hydrogen Bond in Protonated 1,8-Bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene

Experimental and theoretical results are presented based on vibrational spectra and motional dynamics of 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene (DMAN) and its protonated forms (DMANH+ and the DMANH+ HSO4− complex). The studies of these compounds have been performed in the gas phase and solid-state. Spectroscopic investigations were carried out by infrared spectroscopy (IR), Raman, and incoherent inelastic neutron scattering (IINS) experimental methods. Density functional theory (DFT) and Car–Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) methods were applied to support our experimental findings. The fundamental investigations of hydrogen bridge vibrations were accomplished on the basis of isotopic substitutions (NH → ND). Special attention was paid to the bridged proton dynamics in the DMANH+ complex, which was found to be affected by interactions with the HSO4− anion.

Low temperature investigations of dynamic properties in l-leucine - chloranilic acid complex

Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and infra-red (IR) spectroscopy methods were used for determination of dynamic structure of l-leucine - chloranilic acid complex. A theoretical dynamic pattern calculated by the density functional theory (DFT) method for periodic boundary conditions accompanied the experimental ones. Normal modes in the vibrational spectra were defined and described. The characteristic presence of the Hadži's trio enriched by numerous submaxima is observed in the wavenumber range 3200-800 cm^-1. Bands assigned to CH₃ torsion vibrations in the leucine cation were observed at 231 cm^-1 and 258 cm^-1 in the INS spectrum. Temperature-dependent far-infrared spectra in the temperature range 9 K-290 K were obtained. Vibrational bands were analyzed as a function of temperature. Activation energies for reorientational motion of CH₃ and CH₂ groups were determined by means of the band shape analysis performed for torsional and twisting vibrations of these groups. The estimated energy is equal to E_a = 2.7 ± 0.2 kJ/mol and E_a = 2.17 ± 0.12 kJ/mol for CH₃ and CH₂ groups, respectively. A phase transition at about 130 K in the l-leucine - chloranilic acid complex was observed.

Structures and phase transitions in molecular complexes containing tetrafluoroboric acid and tetramethylpyrazine

Cell-quintupling: Structural phase transition in a molecular crystal, bis(trans-4-butylcyclohexyl)methanol

A structural phase transition at 151.6 K of the title compound [bis(trans-4-butylcyclohexyl)methanol] is examined by X-ray diffraction crystallography, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and adiabatic calorimetry. A general consideration on possible superstructures indicates that a single modulation wave is sufficient to drive this cell-quintupling transition. The entropy of transition determined calorimetrically indicates that two conformations are dominant in the room-temperature phase in contrast to the fivefold disorder expected from the structure of the low-temperature phase.

Structures and phase transitions in neat 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-bipyridyl and in its molecular complexes with either bromanilic or iodanilic acid

Using the DSC method, structural phase transitions (PTs) have been found at 165 and 219 K for 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-bipyridyl (dtBBP), whereas for its complex with iodanilic acid (dtBBP·IA) PT is found at 331 K.

Structure-property relationship of supramolecular ferroelectric [H-66dmbp][Hca] accompanied by high polarization, competing structural phases, and polymorphs

Three polymorphic forms of 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridinium chloranilate crystals were characterized to understand the origin of polarization properties and the thermal stability of ferroelectricity. According to the temperature-dependent permittivity, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction, structural phase transitions were found in all polymorphs. Notably, the ferroelectric α-form crystal, which has the longest hydrogen bond (2.95 Å) among the organic acid/base-type supramolecular ferroelectrics, transformed from a polar structure (space group, P21) into an anti-polar structure (space group, P21/c) at 378 K. The non-ferroelectric β- and γ-form crystals also exhibited structural rearrangements around hydrogen bonds. The hydrogen-bonded geometry and ferroelectric properties were compared with other supramolecular ferroelectrics. A positive relationship between the phase-transition temperature (TC ) and hydrogen-bond length (<d>) was observed, and was attributed to the potential barrier height for proton off-centering or order/disorder phenomena. The optimized spontaneous polarization (Ps ) agreed well with the results of the first-principles calculations, and could be amplified by separating the two equilibrium positions of protons with increasing <d>. These data consistently demonstrated that stretching <d> is a promising way to enhance the polarization performance and thermal stability of hydrogen-bonded organic ferroelectrics.

Polarization switching ability dependent on multidomain topology in a uniaxial organic ferroelectric

The switching of electric polarization induced by electric fields, a fundamental functionality of ferroelectrics, is closely associated with the motions of the domain walls that separate regions with distinct polarization directions. Therefore, understanding domain-walls dynamics is of essential importance for advancing ferroelectric applications. In this Letter, we show that the topology of the multidomain structure can have an intrinsic impact on the degree of switchable polarization. Using a combination of polarization hysteresis measurements and piezoresponse force microscopy on a uniaxial organic ferroelectric, α-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridinium chloranilate, we found that the head-to-head (or tail-to-tail) charged domain walls are strongly pinned and thus impede the switching process; in contrast, if the charged domain walls are replaced with electrically neutral antiparallel domain walls, bulk polarization switching is achieved. Our findings suggest that manipulation of the multidomain topology can potentially control the switchable polarization.
