Solvation structure and dynamics of the Fe2+–Fe3+ion pair in water

Stereosopecificity in [Co(sep)][Co(edta)]Cl2·2H2O

The X-ray structure of racemic [Co(sep)][Co(edta)]Cl2·2H2O is reported and reveals hetero-chiral stereospecificity in the interactions of [Co(sep)]3+ with [Co(edta)]−. Hydrogen-bonding along the molecular C2-axes of both complexes accounts for the stereospecificity. The structure of Λ-[Co(en)3]∆-[Co(edta)]2Cl·10H2O has been re-determined. Previous structural data for this compound were collected at room temperature and the model did not sufficiently describe the disorder in the structure. The cryogenic temperature used in the present study allows the disorder to be conformationally locked and modeled more reliably. A clearer inspection of other, structurally interesting, interactions is possible. Again, hydrogen-bonding along the molecular C2-axis of [Co(en)3]3+ and the equatorial carboxylates of [Co(edta)]− is the important interaction. The unique nature of the equatorial carboxylates and molecular C2-axis in [Co(edta)]−, straddled by two pseudo-C3-faces where the arrangement of the carboxylate groups conveys the same helicity, is highlighted. Implications of these structures in understanding stereoselectivity in ion-pairing and electron transfer reactions are discussed.

Mechanistic Insights into the Growth of Anisotropic Nanostructures Inside Reverse Micelles: A Solvation Perspective

Reverse micelles (RMs) as soft templates have been successfully used in tailoring the structural characteristics (size and morphology) of nanomaterials that in turn have been used in various applications. In this work, we have focused on the local perturbations in the different interior domains of the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-reverse micelle-based soft template en route to nanorod formation by monitoring the solvation response of coumarin-based solvatochromic probes (C343 and C153). We have observed an appreciable retardation of the solvent coordinate during the initial phases of nanorod growth, which we have attributed to the reorientational motion of the water molecules lodged in the interfacial region. Moreover, these rigid nanostructures leave their imprints on the soft interfacial layer as was observed from the direct correlation in the solvation response of RM-containing nanostructures and respective surfactant aggregates in supernatant solution. Supporting data from time-resolved anisotropy studies further reinforced our conclusions from the solvation experiments. Our study proves that the hydration dynamics can be a promising tool in tracking the heterogeneous growth evolution of nanostructure formation in RMs since solvent reorganization provides insights into the intrinsic, molecular-level features of the micellar assemblies.

SIZE DEPENDENCE OF SOLVATION STRUCTURE AND DYNAMICS OF IONS IN LIQUID N-METHYLACETAMIDE: A MOLECULAR DYNAMICS SIMULATION STUDY

The solvation structure and dynamics of alkali metal (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, Cs+) and halide (F-, Cl-, Br-, I-) ions in liquid N -methylacetamide (NMA) are calculated at two different temperatures T = 313 K and 453 K, by using classical molecular dynamics simulations. We have also considered [Formula: see text] and some larger cations such as I +, Me 4 N +, and Et4N+ in this study to investigate the size dependence solvation structure and dynamics of ions in liquid NMA. With the increase of ion size, the self-diffusion coefficients of cations are found to increase and the maximum is observed at Me4N+ , whereas for halide ions the increase of diffusion coefficient with ion size continues up to I- and no maximum is observed. However, the relative increase of the diffusion coefficients of larger ion compared to those of Li+ and F+ are found to be significantly higher at low temperature. Results are very good in agreement with experimental observation.

ABEEM/MM-BASED PAIR POTENTIAL FOR MOLECULAR DYNAMICS SIMULATION OF Fe2+(aq) AND Fe3+(aq)

On the basis of atom-bond electronegativity equalization method fused into molecular mechanics (ABEEM/MM), we have constructed the effective Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ion-water potential by fitting to ab initio structures and binding energies for ionic clusters, where Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ ions are in their high spin state. We then apply the ion-water interaction potential in combination with the ABEEM-7P water model to molecular dynamic simulations of single-ion Fe 2+( aq ) and Fe 3+( aq ) solutions, managing to reproduce many experimental, structural and dynamical properties of the solutions. The effects of ionic charges on structural and dynamical properties of water molecules in the hydration shells are discussed.

A quantum mechanical charge field molecular dynamics study of Fe(2+) and Fe(3+) ions in aqueous solutions

Ab initio quantum mechanical charge field molecular dynamics (QMCF-MD) simulations have been performed for aqueous solutions of Fe(2+) and Fe(3+) ions at the Hartree-Fock level of theory to describe and compare their structural and dynamical behavior. The structural features of both hydrated ions are characterized by radial distribution functions that give the maximum probability of the ion-O distance for Fe(2+) and Fe(3+) ions at 2.15 and 2.03 A, respectively. The angular distribution functions of both ions prove the octahedral arrangement of six water ligands, whereas the second shells of these ions differ. Both ions show influence on the water molecules beyond the second shells. The structure-forming abilities of both ions are visible from the ligand mean residence times and ion-O stretching frequencies evaluated for both ions. The substantially improved data obtained from these QMCF-MD simulations show better correlation with available experimental results than the conventional quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics molecular dynamics (QM/MM MD) approaches with one hydration shell treated by quantum mechanics.

Solute size effects on the solvation structure and diffusion of ions in liquid methanol under normal and cold conditions

We have performed a series of molecular dynamics simulations of alkali metal (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+) and halide (F-, Cl-, Br-, and I-) ions in liquid methanol at two different temperatures to investigate the effects of ion size on the hydration structure and diffusion of ions in methanol under normal and cold conditions. Simulations are also carried out for some of the larger cations such as I+, (CH3)4N+, and (C2H5)4N+ and also neutral alkali metal atoms in methanol at both temperatures. With the increase of ion size, the diffusion coefficients of both positive and negative ions are found to show anomalous behavior. For cations, it is found that the maximum of the diffusion coefficient versus ion size curve occurs at the rather large cation of (CH3)4N+ unlike in water where the maximum occurs at the relatively smaller ion of Rb+. For halide ions, the anomalous behavior, i.e., the increase of diffusion with ion size, continues up to iodide ion and no maximum is observed. These results are in good agreement with experimental observations. The diffusion coefficients of neutral atoms are found to be greater in methanol than that in water and they decrease monotonically with solute size, whereas the diffusion coefficients of the corresponding ions are found to be smaller in methanol. Accordingly, an ion experiences a smaller Stokes friction and a higher dielectric friction in methanol than in water. These contrasting effects are believed to be responsible for the shift of the maximum of ion diffusion toward a larger ion size when compared with similar anomalous size dependence in liquid water.

Car−Parrinello Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Fe3+(aq)

The optimized geometry and energetic properties of Fe(D2O)n 3+ clusters, with n = 4 and 6, have been studied with density-functional theory calculations and the BLYP functional, and the hydration of a single Fe 3+ ion in a periodic box with 32 water molecules at room temperature has been studied with Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics and the same functional. We have compared the results from the CPMD simulation with classical MD simulations, using a flexible SPC-based water model and the same number of water molecules, to evaluate the relative strengths and weaknesses of the two MD methods. The classical MD simulations and the CPMD simulations both give Fe-water distances in good agreement with experiment, but for the intramolecular vibrations, the classical MD yields considerably better absolute frequencies and ion-induced frequency shifts. On the other hand, the CPMD method performs considerably better than the classical MD in describing the intramolecular geometry of the water molecule in the first hydration shell and the average first shell...second shell hydrogen-bond distance. Differences between the two methods are also found with respect to the second-shell water orientations. The effect of the small box size (32 vs 512 water molecules) was evaluated by comparing results from classical simulations using different box sizes; non-negligible effects are found for the ion-water distance and the tilt angles of the water molecules in the second hydration shell and for the O-D stretching vibrational frequencies of the water molecules in the first hydration shell.
