Importance of semicore states in GW calculations for simulating accurately the photoemission spectra of metal phthalocyanine molecules

First-principles study on the electronic and optical properties of Bi2WO6

Photocatalytic materials attract continued scientific interest due to their possible application in energy harvesting. These applications critically rely on efficient photon absorption and exciton physics, which are governed by the underlying electronic structure. We report the electronic properties and optical response of the Bi₂WO₆ bulk photocatalyst using first-principle methods. The density functional theory DFT-computed electronic band gap is corrected by including Hubbard potentials for W-5d and O-2p orbitals, and one of the most advanced methods, Quasi-Particle (QP) GW at different levels, with semi-core states of Bi (5s and 5p) and W (4f), carefully taken into account in GW calculations. The perplexing nature of band character of Bi₂WO₆ is examined, and it comes out to be direct at PBE level without SOC. However, it shows indirect nature at GW level or when Spin–Orbit Coupling (SOC) is turned on even at PBE level. The optical response of the material system is computed within independent-particle approximation (IPA), taking into account local field effects and employing the time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) method. Bethe–Salpeter equation (BSE) is used to capture the excitonic effect, and the results of these approximations are compared with the experimental data. Our first-principle calculations results indicate that electron–hole interaction significantly modifies optical absorption of Bi₂WO₆, thereby verifying the reported experimental observations.

The nature of the band gap obtained from SOC and QP corrections changes to indirect. The semi-core states of Bi have been proved to be crucial in the GW calculations. Optical absorption from BSE, including SOC best matches the experimental data.

Electronic Structure of Metallophthalocyanines, MPc (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mg) and Fluorinated MPc

We compute the electronic structure and optical excitation energies of metal-free and transition-metal phthalocyanines (H₂Pc and MPc for M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mg) using density functional theory with optimally tuned range-separated hybrid functionals (OT-RSH). We show that the OT-RSH approach provides photoemission spectra in quantitative agreement with experiments as well as optical band gaps within 10% of their experimental values, capturing the interplay of localized d-states and delocalized π-π* states for these organometallic compounds. We examine the tunability of MPcs and H₂Pc through fluorination, resulting in quasi-rigid shifts of the molecular orbital energies by up to 0.7 eV. Our comprehensive data set provides a new computational benchmark for gas-phase phthalocyanines, significantly improving upon other density-functional-theory-based approaches.

Advanced capabilities for materials modelling with Quantum ESPRESSO

Quantum EXPRESSO is an integrated suite of open-source computer codes for quantum simulations of materials using state-of-the-art electronic-structure techniques, based on density-functional theory, density-functional perturbation theory, and many-body perturbation theory, within the plane-wave pseudopotential and projector-augmented-wave approaches. Quantum EXPRESSO owes its popularity to the wide variety of properties and processes it allows to simulate, to its performance on an increasingly broad array of hardware architectures, and to a community of researchers that rely on its capabilities as a core open-source development platform to implement their ideas. In this paper we describe recent extensions and improvements, covering new methodologies and property calculators, improved parallelization, code modularization, and extended interoperability both within the distribution and with external software.

Local environment of metal ions in phthalocyanines: K-edge X-ray absorption spectra

We describe a model for interpreting XAFS spectra of metal phthalocyanines. The near edge spectra are reproduced in a full potential approach.

Insights and challenges of applying the GW method to transition metal oxides

The ab initio GW method is considered as the most accurate approach for calculating the band gaps of semiconductors and insulators. Yet its application to transition metal oxides (TMOs) has been hindered by the failure of traditional approximations developed for conventional semiconductors. In this work, we examine the effects of these approximations on the values of band gaps for ZnO, Cu2O, and TiO2. In particular, we explore the origin of the differences between the two widely used plasmon-pole models. Based on the comparison of our results with the experimental data and previously published calculations, we discuss which approximations are suitable for TMOs and why.

Approximate treatment of semicore states in GW calculations with application to Au clusters

We address the treatment of transition metal atoms in GW electronic-structure calculations within the plane-wave pseudo-potential formalism. The contributions of s and p semi-core electrons to the self-energy, which are essential to grant an acceptable accuracy, are dealt with using a recently proposed scheme whereby the exchange components are treated exactly at the G0W0 level, whereas a suitable approximation to the correlation components is devised. This scheme is benchmarked for small gold nano-clusters, resulting in ionization potentials, electron affinities, and density of states in very good agreement with those obtained from calculations where s and p semicore states are treated as valence orbitals, and allowing us to apply this same scheme to clusters of intermediate size, Au20 and Au32, that would be otherwise very difficult to deal with.

Many-body Green's function GW and Bethe-Salpeter study of the optical excitations in a paradigmatic model dipeptide

We study within the many-body Green's function GW and Bethe-Salpeter formalisms the excitation energies of a paradigmatic model dipeptide, focusing on the four lowest-lying local and charge-transfer excitations. Our GW calculations are performed at the self-consistent level, updating first the quasiparticle energies, and further the single-particle wavefunctions within the static Coulomb-hole plus screened-exchange approximation to the GW self-energy operator. Important level crossings, as compared to the starting Kohn-Sham LDA spectrum, are identified. Our final Bethe-Salpeter singlet excitation energies are found to agree, within 0.07 eV, with CASPT2 reference data, except for one charge-transfer state where the discrepancy can be as large as 0.5 eV. Our results agree best with LC-BLYP and CAM-B3LYP calculations with enhanced long-range exchange, with a 0.1 eV mean absolute error. This has been achieved employing a parameter-free formalism applicable to metallic or insulating extended or finite systems.

Excited states properties of organic molecules: from density functional theory to the GW and Bethe-Salpeter Green's function formalisms

Many-body Green's function perturbation theories, such as the GW and Bethe-Salpeter formalisms, are starting to be routinely applied to study charged and neutral electronic excitations in molecular organic systems relevant to applications in photovoltaics, photochemistry or biology. In parallel, density functional theory and its time-dependent extensions significantly progressed along the line of range-separated hybrid functionals within the generalized Kohn-Sham formalism designed to provide correct excitation energies. We give an overview and compare these approaches with examples drawn from the study of gas phase organic systems such as fullerenes, porphyrins, bacteriochlorophylls or nucleobases molecules. The perspectives and challenges that many-body perturbation theory is facing, such as the role of self-consistency, the calculation of forces and potential energy surfaces in the excited states, or the development of embedding techniques specific to the GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation formalisms, are outlined.

Molecular distortion and charge transfer effects in ZnPc/Cu(111)

The adsorption geometry and electronic properties of a zinc-phthalocyanine molecule on a Cu(111) substrate are studied by density functional theory. In agreement with experiment, we find remarkable distortions of the molecule, mainly as the central Zn atom tends towards the substrate to minimize the Zn-Cu distance. As a consequence, the Zn-N chemical bonding and energy levels of the molecule are significantly modified. However, charge transfer induces metallic states on the molecule and therefore is more important for the ZnPc/Cu(111) system than the structural distortions.
