Interaction of gas‐phase atomic deuterium with the Ru(001)–p(1×2)–O surface: Kinetics of hydroxyl and water formation

Water Formation Reaction under Interfacial Confinement: Al0.25Si0.75O2 on O-Ru(0001)

Confined nanosized spaces at the interface between a metal and a seemingly inert material, such as a silicate, have recently been shown to influence the chemistry at the metal surface. In prior work, we observed that a bilayer (BL) silica on Ru(0001) can change the reaction pathway of the water formation reaction (WFR) near room temperature when compared to the bare metal. In this work, we looked at the effect of doping the silicate with Al, resulting in a stoichiometry of Al_0.25Si_0.75O₂. We investigated the kinetics of WFR at elevated H₂ pressures and various temperatures under interfacial confinement using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The apparent activation energy was lower than that on bare Ru(0001) but higher than that on the BL-silica/Ru(0001). The apparent reaction order with respect to H₂ was also determined. The increased residence time of water at the surface, resulting from the presence of the BL-aluminosilicate (and its subsequent electrostatic stabilization), favors the so-called disproportionation reaction pathway (*H₂O + *O ↔ 2 *OH), but with a higher energy barrier than for pure BL-silica.

Water Formation under Silica Thin Films: Real-Time Observation of a Chemical Reaction in a Physically Confined Space

Using low-energy electron microscopy and local photoelectron spectroscopy, water formation from adsorbed O and H2 on a Ru(0001) surface covered with a vitreous SiO2 bilayer (BL) was investigated and compared to the same reaction on bare Ru(0001). In both cases the reaction is characterized by moving reaction fronts. The reason for this might be related to the requirement of site release by O adatoms for further H2 -dissociative adsorption. Apparent activation energies (Eaapp ) are found for the front motion of 0.59 eV without cover and 0.27 eV under cover. We suggest that the smaller activation energy but higher reaction temperature for the reaction on the SiO2 BL covered Ru(0001) surface is due to a change of the rate-determining step. Other possible effects of the cover are discussed. Our results give the first values for Eaapp in confined space.

Scaling relationships and theory for vibrational frequencies of adsorbates on transition metal surfaces

Adsorbate vibrational excitations are an important fingerprint of molecule/surface interactions, affecting temperature contributions to the free energy and impacting reaction rate and equilibrium constants. Furthermore, vibrational spectra aid in identifying species and adsorption sites present in experimental studies. Despite their importance, knowledge of how adsorbate frequencies scale across materials is lacking. Here, by combining previously reported experimental data and our own density-functional theory calculations, we reveal linear correlations between vibrational frequencies of adsorbates on transition metal surfaces. Through effective-medium theory, linear muffin-tin orbital theory, and the d-band model, we rationalize the squares of the frequencies to be fundamentally linear in their scaling across transition metal surfaces. We identify the adsorbate-binding energy as a descriptor for certain molecular vibrations and rigorously relate errors in frequencies to errors in adsorption energies. We also discuss the impact of scaling on surface thermochemistry and adsorbate coverage.
