Transient chaotic rotating waves in a ring of unidirectionally coupled symmetric Bonhoeffer-van der Pol oscillators near a codimension-two bifurcation point

White-noise-induced double coherence resonances in reduced Hodgkin-Huxley neuron model near subcritical Hopf bifurcation

Coherence resonance (CR) describes a counterintuitive phenomenon in which the optimal oscillatory responses in nonlinear systems are shaped by a suitable noise amplitude. This phenomenon has been observed in neural systems. In this research, the generation of double coherence resonances (DCRs) due to white noise is investigated in a three-dimensional reduced Hodgkin-Huxley neuron model with multiple-timescale feature. We show that additive white noise can induce DCRs from the resting state near a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. The appearance of DCRs is related to the changes of the firing pattern aroused by the increases of the noise amplitude. The underlying dynamical mechanisms for the appearance of the DCRs and the changes of the firing pattern are interpreted using the phase space analysis and the dynamics of the stable focus-node near the subcritical Hopf bifurcation. We find that the multiple-timescale dynamics is essential for generating the DCRs and different firing patterns. The results not only present a case in which noise can induce DCRs near a Hopf bifurcation but also provide its dynamical mechanism, which enriches the phenomena in nonlinear dynamics and provides further understanding on the roles of noise in neural systems with multiple-timescale feature.

Embedding the dynamics of a single delay system into a feed-forward ring

We investigate the relation between the dynamics of a single oscillator with delayed self-feedback and a feed-forward ring of such oscillators, where each unit is coupled to its next neighbor in the same way as in the self-feedback case. We show that periodic solutions of the delayed oscillator give rise to families of rotating waves with different wave numbers in the corresponding ring. In particular, if for the single oscillator the periodic solution is resonant to the delay, it can be embedded into a ring with instantaneous couplings. We discover several cases where the stability of a periodic solution for the single unit can be related to the stability of the corresponding rotating wave in the ring. As a specific example, we demonstrate how the complex bifurcation scenario of simultaneously emerging multijittering solutions can be transferred from a single oscillator with delayed pulse feedback to multijittering rotating waves in a sufficiently large ring of oscillators with instantaneous pulse coupling. Finally, we present an experimental realization of this dynamical phenomenon in a system of coupled electronic circuits of FitzHugh-Nagumo type.

Effects of self-coupling and asymmetric output on metastable dynamical transient firing patterns in arrays of neurons with bidirectional inhibitory coupling

Metastable dynamical transient patterns in arrays of bidirectionally coupled neurons with self-coupling and asymmetric output were studied. First, an array of asymmetric sigmoidal neurons with symmetric inhibitory bidirectional coupling and self-coupling was considered and the bifurcations of its steady solutions were shown. Metastable dynamical transient spatially nonuniform states existed in the presence of a pair of spatially symmetric stable solutions as well as unstable spatially nonuniform solutions in a restricted range of the output gain of a neuron. The duration of the transients increased exponentially with the number of neurons up to the maximum number at which the spatially nonuniform steady solutions were stabilized. The range of the output gain for which they existed reduced as asymmetry in a sigmoidal output function of a neuron increased, while the existence range expanded as the strength of inhibitory self-coupling increased. Next, arrays of spiking neuron models with slow synaptic inhibitory bidirectional coupling and self-coupling were considered with computer simulation. In an array of Class 1 Hindmarsh-Rose type models, in which each neuron showed a graded firing rate, metastable dynamical transient firing patterns were observed in the presence of inhibitory self-coupling. This agreed with the condition for the existence of metastable dynamical transients in an array of sigmoidal neurons. In an array of Class 2 Bonhoeffer-van der Pol models, in which each neuron had a clear threshold between firing and resting, long-lasting transient firing patterns with bursting and irregular motion were observed.

Effects of gap junction inhibition on contraction waves in the murine small intestine in relation to coupled oscillator theory

Waves of contraction in the small intestine correlate with slow waves generated by the myenteric network of interstitial cells of Cajal. Coupled oscillator theory has been used to explain steplike gradients in the frequency (frequency plateaux) of contraction waves along the length of the small intestine. Inhibition of gap junction coupling between oscillators should lead to predictable effects on these plateaux and the wave dislocation (wave drop) phenomena associated with their boundaries. It is these predictions that we wished to test. We used a novel multicamera diameter-mapping system to measure contraction along 25- to 30-cm lengths of murine small intestine. There were typically two to three plateaux per length of intestine. Dislocations could be limited to the wavefronts immediately about the terminated wave, giving the appearance of a three-pronged fork, i.e., a fork dislocation; additionally, localized decreases in velocity developed across a number of wavefronts, ending with the terminated wave, which could appear as a fork, i.e., slip dislocations. The gap junction inhibitor carbenoxolone increased the number of plateaux and dislocations and decreased contraction wave velocity. In some cases, the usual frequency gradient was reversed, with a plateau at a higher frequency than its proximal neighbor; thus fork dislocations were inverted, and the direction of propagation was reversed. Heptanol had no effect on the frequency or velocity of contractions but did reduce their amplitude. To understand intestinal motor patterns, the pacemaker network of the interstitial cells of Cajal is best evaluated as a system of coupled oscillators.

Effects of asymmetric coupling and self-coupling on metastable dynamical transient rotating waves in a ring of sigmoidal neurons

Transient rotating waves in a ring of sigmoidal neurons with asymmetric bidirectional coupling and self-coupling were studied. When a pair of stable steady states and an unstable traveling wave coexisted, rotating waves propagating in a ring were generated in transients. The pinning (propagation failure) of the traveling wave occurred in the presence of asymmetric coupling and self-coupling, and its conditions were obtained. A kinematical equation for the propagation of wave fronts of the traveling and rotating waves was then derived for a large output gain of neurons. The kinematical equation showed that the duration of transient rotating waves increases exponentially with the number of neurons as that in a ring of unidirectionally coupled neurons (metastable dynamical transients). However, the exponential growth rate depended on the asymmetry of bidirectional coupling and the strength of self-coupling. The rate was equal to the propagation time of the traveling wave (a reciprocal of the propagation speed), and it increased near pinned regions. Then transient rotating waves could show metastable dynamics (extremely long duration) even in a ring of a small number of neurons.

Metastable dynamical patterns and their stabilization in arrays of bidirectionally coupled sigmoidal neurons

Transient patterns in a bistable ring of bidirectionally coupled sigmoidal neurons were studied. When the system had a pair of spatially uniform steady solutions, the instability of unstable spatially nonuniform steady solutions decreased exponentially with the number of neurons because of the symmetry of the system. As a result, transient spatially nonuniform patterns showed dynamical metastability: Their duration increased exponentially with the number of neurons and the duration of randomly generated patterns obeyed a power-law distribution. However, these metastable dynamical patterns were easily stabilized in the presence of small variations in coupling strength. Metastable rotating waves and their pinning in the presence of asymmetry in the direction of coupling and the disappearance of metastable dynamical patterns due to asymmetry in the output function of a neuron were also examined. Further, in a two-dimensional array of neurons with nearest-neighbor coupling, intrinsically one-dimensional patterns were dominant in transients, and self-excitation in these neurons affected the metastable dynamical patterns.
