Advanced Thomson scattering system for high-flux linear plasma generator

2D measurements of plasma electron density using coherence imaging with a pixelated phase mask

In this paper, the pixelated phase mask (PPM) method of interferometry is applied to coherence imaging (CI)-a passive, narrowband spectral imaging technique for diagnosing the edge and divertor regions of fusion plasma experiments. Compared to previous CI designs that use a linear phase mask, the PPM method allows for a higher possible spatial resolution. The PPM method is also observed to give a higher instrument contrast (analogous to a more narrow spectrometer instrument function). A single-delay PPM instrument is introduced as well as a multi-delay system that uses a combination of both pixelated and linear phase masks to encode the coherence of the observed radiation at four different interferometer delays simultaneously. The new methods are demonstrated with measurements of electron density n_e, via Stark broadening of the H_γ emission line at 434.0 nm, made on the Magnum-PSI linear plasma experiment. A comparison of the Abel-inverted multi-delay CI measurements with Thomson scattering shows agreement across the 3 × 10¹⁹ < n_e < 1 × 10²¹ m^-3 range. For the single-delay CI results, agreement is found for n_e > 1 × 10²⁰ m^-3 only. Accurate and independent interpretation of single-delay CI data at lower n_e was not possible due to Doppler broadening and continuum emission.

Dual-pass upgrade to the Thomson scattering diagnostic on the Prototype-Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (Proto-MPEX)

The Thomson scattering (TS) diagnostic on the Prototype-Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment has been upgraded to measure electron temperature (T _e ) and density (n _e ) simultaneously at two axial locations. After the first pass through the vacuum vessel, the exiting laser beamline is re-collimated in the atmosphere and rerouted into the vacuum vessel for the second pass. The upgrade will help diagnose axial T _e and n _e gradients between the "central chamber" and the target region which are located 1 m and 2.5 m, respectively, downstream from the Helicon radio-frequency source. The TS measurements have given T _e ≈ 4-15 eV and n _e ≈ 2-4 × 10¹⁹ m^-3 at the central chamber and T _e ≈ 1-2 eV and n _e ≈ 1-2 × 10¹⁹ m^-3 at the target region. The upgrade also increases the number of sampling points at the target region from 3 fibers to 5 fibers, measuring 3 cm radially across the plasma column, and 25 fibers in the central chamber, radially spanning 8 cm. The intensified CCD camera is double triggered for each laser pulse in order to measure (1) the TS and laser stray light and (2) the plasma background light that contains nuisance emission lines and bremsstrahlung. Subtracting the background light from the TS photons improves the temperature and density measurements. Details of the diagnostic setup, axial and radial measurements, and areas for further optimization are discussed.

High resolution Thomson scattering system for steady-state linear plasma sources

The high resolution Thomson scattering system with 63 points along a 25 mm line measures the radial electron temperature (T_e) and its density (n_e) in an argon plasma. By using a DC arc source with lanthanum hexaboride (LaB₆) electrode, plasmas with electron temperature of over 5 eV and densities of 1.5 × 10¹⁹ m^-3 have been measured. The system uses a frequency doubled (532 nm) Nd:YAG laser with 0.25 J/pulse at 20 Hz. The scattered light is collected and sent to a triple-grating spectrometer via optical-fibers, where images are recorded by an intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera. Although excellent in stray-light reduction, a disadvantage comes with its relatively low optical transmission and in sampling a tiny scattering volume. Thus requires accumulating multitude of images. In order to improve photon statistics, pixel binning in the ICCD camera as well as enlarging the intermediate slit-width inside the triple-grating spectrometer has been exploited. In addition, the ICCD camera capture images at 40 Hz while the laser is at 20 Hz. This operation mode allows us to alternate between background and scattering shot images. By image subtraction, influences from the plasma background are effectively taken out. Maximum likelihood estimation that uses a parameter sweep finds best fitting parameters T_e and n_e with the incoherent scattering spectrum.

First results from the Thomson scattering diagnostic on proto-MPEX

A Thomson scattering (TS) diagnostic has been successfully implemented on the prototype Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (Proto-MPEX) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The diagnostic collects the light scattered by plasma electrons and spectroscopically resolves the Doppler shift imparted to the light by the velocity of the electrons. The spread in velocities is proportional to the electron temperature, while the total number of photons is proportional to the electron density. TS is a technique used on many devices to measure the electron temperature (T_e) and electron density (n_e) of the plasma. A challenging aspect of the technique is to discriminate the small number of Thomson scattered photons against the large peak of background photons from the high-power laser used to probe the plasma. A variety of methods are used to mitigate the background photons in Proto-MPEX, including Brewster angled windows, viewing dumps, and light baffles. With these methods, first results were measured from argon plasmas in Proto-MPEX, indicating T_e ∼ 2 eV and n_e ∼ 1 × 10¹⁹ m^-3. The configuration of the Proto-MPEX TS diagnostic will be described and plans for improvement will be given.

Electron density and temperature measurements in a magnetized expanding hydrogen plasma

We report measurements of electron densities, n_{e}, and temperatures, T_{e}, in a magnetized expanding hydrogen plasma performed using Thomson scattering. The effects of applying an axial magnetic field and changing the background pressure in the plasma vessel on n_{e} and T_{e} along the expansion axis are reported. Magnetic field strengths (B field) up to 170 mT were applied, which are one order of magnitude larger than previously reported. The main effect of the applied B field is the plasma confinement, which leads to higher n_{e}. At B fields larger than 88 mT the electron density along the expansion axis does not depend strongly on the magnetic field strength. However, T_{e} is susceptible to the B field and reaches at 170 mT a maximum of 2.5 eV at a distance of 1.5 cm from the exit of the cascaded arc. To determine also the effect of the arc current through the arc, measurements were performed with arc currents of 45, 60, and 75 A at background pressures of 9.7 and 88.3 Pa. At constant magnetic field n_{e} decreases from the exit of the arc along the expansion axis when the arc current is decreased. At 88.3 Pa n_{e} shows a higher value close to the exit of the arc, but a faster decay along the expansion axis with respect to the 9.7 Pa case. T_{e} is overall higher at lower pressure reaching a maximum of 3.2 eV at the lower arc current of 45 A. The results of this study complement our understanding and the characterization of expanding hydrogen plasmas.

Performance of JT-60SA divertor Thomson scattering diagnostics

For the satellite tokamak JT-60 Super Advanced (JT-60SA), a divertor Thomson scattering measurement system is planning to be installed. In this study, we improved the design of the collection optics based on the previous one, in which it was found that the solid angle of the collection optics became very small, mainly because of poor accessibility to the measurement region. By improvement, the solid angle was increased by up to approximately five times. To accurately assess the measurement performance, background noise was assessed using the plasma parameters in two typical discharges in JT-60SA calculated from the SONIC code. Moreover, the influence of the reflection of bremsstrahlung radiation by the wall is simulated by using a ray tracing simulation. The errors in the temperature and the density are assessed based on the simulation results for three typical field of views.

Initial implementation of a Thomson scattering diagnostic for Proto-MPEX

Internal funds have been used at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to enable the initial installation of a laser based, Thomson scattering (TS) diagnostic on the prototype Material-Plasma Exposure eXperiment (Proto-MPEX). Since the funds are limited in amount and duration, the initial TS system has followed a low cost design and rapid implementation. This paper will discuss the design elements of the initial TS configuration on Proto-MPEX and issues encountered during installation. Avenues of response to system limitations will be discussed, along with considerations for further optimization. The laser system will undergo reconfiguration to enable additional project milestones, e.g., laser induced break-down spectroscopy.
