L2,3 edge photoabsorption spectra of bulk V2O5: A two components relativistic time dependent density functional theory description with finite cluster model

cis-[(η5-C5H5)Fe(η1-CO)(μ-CO)]2, the poor relative between cis and trans tautomers. A theoretical study of the gas-phase Fe L3-edge and C and O K-edge XAS of trans-/cis-[(η5-C5H5)Fe(η1-CO)(μ-CO)]2

The relative stability of trans-[(η⁵-C₅H₅)Fe(η¹-CO)(μ-CO)]₂ (trans-I) and cis-I tautomers in a vacuum and in solvents with different dielectric constants (ε) has been investigated by exploiting density functional theory (DFT). Theoretical results indicate that, in agreement with experimental evidence, trans-I is more stable than cis-I in a vacuum (∼1.5 kcal mol^-1; ε = 1), while the opposite is true in media with ε > 7. Differently from solution, DFT outcomes pertaining to the vapor-phase cis-I ⇆ trans-I equilibrium at T = 368 K, the temperature at which the Fe L_2,3-edges and the C and O K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data of I have been recorded, ultimately indicate the trans-I predominance (∼93%). Compositions, oscillator strengths (f) and excitation energy (EE) values of cis-I transitions substantially mirror those of trans-I; nevertheless, the weighted cis-If(EE) distributions negligibly contribute to the diverse simulated XA spectra of I.

Comparative Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Fe L2,3-Edges X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy in Three Highly Popular, Low-Spin Organoiron Complexes: [Fe(CO)5], [(η5-C5H5)Fe(CO)(μ-CO)]2, and [(η5-C5H5)2Fe]

The occupied and unoccupied electronic structures of three highly popular, closed shell organoiron complexes ([Fe(CO)₅], [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Fe(CO)(μ-CO)]₂, and [(η⁵-C₅H₅)₂Fe]) have been theoretically investigated by taking advantage of density functional theory (DFT) calculations coupled to the isolobal analogy ( Elian et al. Inorg. Chem. 1976 , 15 , 1148 ). The adopted approach allowed us to look into the relative role played by the ligand → Fe donation and the Fe → ligand back-donation in title molecules, as well as to investigate how CO- (terminal or bridging) and [(η⁵-C₅H₅)]^--based π* orbitals compete when these two ligands are simultaneously present as in [(η⁵-C₅H₅)Fe(CO)(μ-CO)]₂. Insights into the nature and the strength of the bonding between Fe and the C donor atoms have been gained by exploiting the Nalewajski-Mrozek bond multiplicity index ( Nalewajski et al. Int. J. Quantum Chem. 1994 , 51 , 187 ), which have been found especially sensitive even to tiny bond distance variations. The bonding picture emerging from ground state DFT results proved fruitful to guide the assignment of original, high-resolution, gas-phase L_2,3-edges X-ray absorption spectra of the title molecules, which have been modeled by the two-component relativistic time-dependent DFT including spin orbit coupling and correlation effects and taking advantage of the full use of symmetry. Assignments alternative to those reported in the literature for both [Fe(CO)₅] and [(η⁵-C₅H₅)₂Fe] are herein proposed. Despite the high popularity of the investigated molecules, the complementary use of symmetry, orbital, and spectroscopy allowed us to further look into the metal-ligand symmetry-restricted-covalency and the differential-orbital covalency, which characterize them.

Investigation of the multiplet features of SrTiO3 in X-ray absorption spectra based on configuration interaction calculations

Synchrotron-based L_2,3-edge absorption spectra show strong sensitivities to the local electronic structure and chemical environment. However, detailed physical information cannot be extracted easily without computational aids. Here, using the experimental Ti L_2,3-edges absorption spectrum of SrTiO₃ as a fingerprint and considering full multiplet effects, calculations yield different energy parameters characterizing local ground state properties. The peak splitting and intensity ratios of the L₃ and L₂ set of peaks are carefully analyzed quantitatively, giving rise to a small hybridization energy around 1.2 eV, and the different hybridization energy values reported in the literature are further addressed. Finally, absorption spectra with different linearly polarized photons under various tetragonal crystal fields are investigated, revealing a non-linear orbital-lattice interaction, and a theoretical guidance for material engineering of SrTiO₃-based thin films and heterostructures is offered. Detailed analysis of spectrum shifts with different tetragonal crystal fields suggests that the e_g crystal field splitting is a necessary parameter for a thorough analysis of the spectra, even though it is not relevant for the ground state properties.

A combined experimental and theoretical spectroscopic protocol for determination of the structure of heterogeneous catalysts: developing the information content of the resonance Raman spectra of M1 MoVO x

Absorption and multiwavelength resonance Raman spectroscopy are widely used to investigate the electronic structure of transition metal centers in coordination compounds and extended solid systems. In combination with computational methodologies that have predictive accuracy, they define powerful protocols to study the spectroscopic response of catalytic materials. In this work, we study the absorption and resonance Raman spectra of the M1 MoVO _x catalyst. The spectra were calculated by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) in conjunction with the independent mode displaced harmonic oscillator model (IMDHO), which allows for detailed bandshape predictions. For this purpose cluster models with up to 9 Mo and V metallic centers are considered to represent the bulk structure of MoVO _x . Capping hydrogens were used to achieve valence saturation at the edges of the cluster models. The construction of model structures was based on a thorough bonding analysis which involved conventional DFT and local coupled cluster (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) methods. Furthermore the relationship of cluster topology to the computed spectral features is discussed in detail. It is shown that due to the local nature of the involved electronic transitions, band assignment protocols developed for molecular systems can be applied to describe the calculated spectral features of the cluster models as well. The present study serves as a reference for future applications of combined experimental and computational protocols in the field of solid-state heterogeneous catalysis.

Investigation of the Na Intercalation Mechanism into Nanosized V2O5/C Composite Cathode Material for Na-Ion Batteries

There is a significant interest to develop high-performance and cost-effective electrode materials for next-generation sodium ion batteries. Herein, we report a facile synthesis method for nanosized V2O5/C composite cathodes and their electrochemical performance as well as energy storage mechanism. The composite exhibits a discharge capacity of 255 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 0.05 C, which surpasses that of previously reported layered oxide materials. Furthermore, the electrode shows good rate capability; discharge capacity of 160 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 1 C. The reaction mechanism of V2O5 upon sodium insertion/extraction is investigated using ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron based near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Ex situ XRD result of the fully discharged state reveals the appearance of NaV2O5 as a major phase with minor Na2V2O5 phase. Upon insertion of sodium into the array of parallel ladders of V2O5, it was confirmed that lattice parameter of c is increased by 9.09%, corresponding to the increase in the unit-cell volume of 9.2%. NEXAFS results suggest that the charge compensation during de/sodiation process accompanied by the reversible changes in the oxidation state of vanadium (V(4+) ↔ V(5+)).

Atomic and electronic aspects of the coloration mechanism of gasochromic Pt/Mo-modified V2O5 smart films: an in situ X-ray spectroscopic study

Local geometric and electronic structures of gasochromic VO(x) films

VOx films were deposited by radio-frequency reactive magnetron sputtering from a vanadium target at room temperature. Local atomic and electronic structures of the films were then modified by thermal annealing. The oxidation state and structural and gasochromic properties of the films were elucidated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Analytical results indicate that the as-deposited VOx films were amorphous with mixed V(4+) and V(5+) valences. The amorphous VOx had a disordered and expanded lamellar structure resembling that of polymer-intercalated V2O5 gels. VOx films were crystallized into orthorhombic V2O5 at 300 °C, and the lamellar structure was eliminated at 400 °C. Additionally, the gasochromic reaction reduced the vanadium valence via intervalence transitions between V(5+) and V(3+). Moreover, removing the lamellar structure reduced the gasochromic rate, and the gasochromic reaction transformed the V2O5 crystalline phase irreversibly into an H1.43V2O5 phase. Based on the results of this study, amorphous VOx with a lamellar structure is recommended for use in H2 gas sensors.

First principles calculations of the structure and V L-edge X-ray absorption spectra of V2O5 using local pair natural orbital coupled cluster theory and spin-orbit coupled configuration interaction approaches

A detailed study of the electronic and geometric structure of V2O5 and its X-ray spectroscopic properties is presented. Cluster models of increasing size were constructed in order to represent the surface and the bulk environment of V2O5. The models were terminated with hydrogen atoms at the edges or embedded in a Madelung field. The structure and interlayer binding energies were studied with dispersion-corrected local, hybrid and double hybrid density functional theory as well as the local pair natural orbital coupled cluster method (LPNO-CCSD). Convergence of the results with respect to cluster size was achieved by extending the model to up to 20 vanadium centers. The O K-edge and the V L2,3-edge NEXAFS spectra of V2O5 were calculated on the basis of the newly developed Restricted Open shell Configuration Interaction with Singles (DFT-ROCIS) method. In this study the applicability of the method is extended to the field of solid-state catalysis. For the first time excellent agreement between theoretically predicted and experimentally measured vanadium L-edge NEXAFS spectra of V2O5 was achieved. At the same time the agreement between experimental and theoretical oxygen K-edge spectra is also excellent. Importantly, the intensity distribution between the oxygen K-edge and vanadium L-edge spectra is correctly reproduced, thus indicating that the covalency of the metal-ligand bonds is correctly described by the calculations. The origin of the spectral features is discussed in terms of the electronic structure using both quasi-atomic jj coupling and molecular LS coupling schemes. The effects of the bulk environment driven by weak interlayer interactions were also studied, demonstrating that large clusters are important in order to correctly calculate core level absorption spectra in solids.
