Abstract
A dynamical rearrangement in the electronic structure of a molecule can be driven by different phenomena, including nuclear motion, electronic coherence or electron correlation. Recording such electronic dynamics and identifying its fate in an aqueous solution has remained a challenge. Here, we reveal the electronic dynamics induced by electronic relaxation through conical intersections in both isolated and solvated pyrazine molecules using X-ray spectroscopy. We show that the ensuing created dynamics corresponds to a cyclic rearrangement of the electronic structure around the aromatic ring. Furthermore, we found that such electronic dynamics were entirely suppressed when pyrazine was dissolved in water. Our observations confirm that conical intersections can create electronic dynamics that are not directly excited by the pump pulse and that aqueous solvation can dephase them in less than 40 fs. These results have implications for the investigation of electronic dynamics created during light-induced molecular dynamics and shed light on their susceptibility to aqueous solvation.

Abstract
We theoretically demonstrated that helical-photon-dressed states determine the rotational directions of the π-electrons of aromatic ring molecules formed by a circularly polarized or an elliptically polarized laser. This theory was verified using a minimal three-electronic-state model under the frozen nuclei condition. The model consists of the ground state and either a doubly degenerate electronic excited state or two quasi-degenerate excited states. Three helical-photon-dressed states were derived by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation within the semi-classical treatment of light-molecule interactions and rotating wave approximation. The angular momenta of the two helical-photon-dressed states represent the classical rotational direction, and that of the remaining state represents the opposite rotation, that is, non-classical rotation. Classical rotation means that π-electrons have the same rotational direction as that of a given helical electric field vector and obeys the classical equations of motion. Non-classical rotation indicates that the rotational direction is opposite to that of the helical electric field vector. Non-classical rotation is forbidden in an aromatic ring molecule with high symmetry formed by a circularly polarized laser but is allowed in a low symmetric aromatic ring molecule. The sum of the angular momenta of the three dressed states is zero. This is called the sum law for the angular momentum components in this paper. Benzene (D6h) and toluene (CS) were adopted as typical aromatic ring molecules of high and low symmetries, respectively. Finally, considering the effects of nuclear vibrations in the adiabatic approximation, an expression for the π-electron angular momentum was derived and applied to toluene.

Abstract
We study the electronic spin flux (atomic-scale flow of the spin density in molecules) by a perturbation analysis and ab initio nonadiabatic calculations. We derive a general perturbative expression of the charge and spin fluxes and identify the driving perturbation of the fluxes to be the time derivative of the electron-nucleus interaction term in the Hamiltonian. We then expand the expression in molecular orbitals so as to identify relevant components of the fluxes. Our perturbation theory describes the electronic fluxes in the early stage of reactions in an intuitively clear manner. The perturbation theory is then applied to an analysis of the spin flux obtained in ab initio calculations of the radical reaction of O2 and CH3· starting from three distinct spin configurations; (a) CH3· and triplet O2 with total spin of the system set Stot=1/2 (b) CH3· and singlet O2, Stot=1/2, and (c) CH3· and triplet O2, Stot=3/2. Further analysis of the time-dependent behaviors of the spin flux in these numerical simulations reveals (i) the spin flux induces rearrangement of the local spin structure, such as reduction of the spin polarization arising from the triplet O2 and (ii) the spin flux flows from O2 to CH3· in the reaction starting from spin configuration (a) and from CH3· to O2 in that starting from configuration (b), whereas no major intermolecular spin flux was observed in that starting from configuration (c). Our study thus establishes the mechanism of the spin flux that rearranges the local spin structures associated with chemical bonds.

Abstract
The coherent ring current of Mg-phthalocyanine created by a broad band UV-visible pump pulse shows variation with time, where the ring currents at the corner benzene rings, around the Mg cation and on the outer ring oscillate with different time periods and the current density migrates among these regions. The 7 pairs of Eu degenerate excited states populated upon photoexcitation, generate 21 distinct coherent ring currents. We further calculate the time-resolved X-ray circular dichroism (TRXCD) spectrum of the coherences contributing to the ring current obtained by an attosecond X-ray probe pulse resonant with the nitrogen K-edge. A frequency domain TRXCD signal obtained by a Fourier transform of the signal with respect to the pump-probe delay time clearly separates the currents induced by different state pairs. The coherent ring current of Mg-phthalocyanine are created by a broad band UV-visible pump pulse and migrate into different regions within the molecule. This coherent ring current dynamics is probed by time-resolved X-ray circular dichroism.![]()

Abstract
The effects of vibrational motions on dynamic Stark-induced π-electron rotations in a low-symmetry aromatic ring molecule are theoretically studied in the adiabatic approximation. We adopt a simplified three-electronic state model with a few vibronic states. A pair of the lowest vibronic states in two electronic excited states is set degenerate by irradiation of two linearly polarized UV lasers. The resultant degenerate state is named the dynamic Stark-induced degenerate vibronic state (DSIDVS). The laser parameters (intensities and central frequencies) are determined under the conditions of DSIDVS formation. The aromatic ring molecules of interest are supposed to belong to the weak coupling case. The analytical expressions for the DSIDVS and coherent angular momentum LZ(t) are derived in the displaced harmonic oscillator (DHO) model. Two horizontal potential displacements (δα, δβ) between the two electronic excited states (α and β) and the ground state are the parameters in the DHO model. The LZ(t) calculated with δα = δβ is characterized by a regular sequence of the angular momentum pulses with a positive (or negative) constant. For a more general case with δα ≠ δβ, the regular sequence is broken down because of the contribution of the first excited vibronic state in each electronic state to LZ(t).

Abstract
We present the results of a theoretical study on dynamic Stark-induced coherent π-electron rotations in a chiral aromatic ring molecule. This is an extension of our previous papers, which have been published in Mineo , H. [ Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2016 , 18 , 26786 - 26795 ] and Mineo , H. [ J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2018 , 9 , 5521 - 5526 ]. In those papers, the time-dependent Schrödinger equation was solved under a restricted condition in which a degenerate excited state should be formed at the center of the two relevant excited states by dynamic Stark effects. The dynamic Stark-induced degenerate state (DSIDS) is essential to create unidirectional π-electron rotations. In the present theoretical treatment, the above restriction is relaxed and the DSIDS is set to be at any energy position between the two excited states. This indicates a wide applicability of the dynamic Stark effects to coherent control of photophysical properties in aromatic molecules, such as coherent ring currents and current-induced magnetic fluxes of low-symmetric aromatic molecules. Analytical expressions for the coherent π-electron angular momentum are derived within a three-electronic-state model by using the Laplace transform method. The validity of the developed theoretical procedure is demonstrated by carrying out simulations of the coherent angular momentum of l-phenylalanine. Effects of varying the DSIDS on the time-dependent coherent angular momentum and the populations in the three electronic states are examined, and the results are analyzed using approximate expressions for the time-dependent coherent angular momentum and the populations. Modulations in the time-dependent coherent angular momentum appear when the DSIDS is set at an energy position between the two excited states, while there are no beating modulations when the DSIDS is set at the center position. Such differences originate from whether interferences between the two dressed states take place or not.

Abstract
Electron coherence is a fundamental quantum phenomenon in today’s ultrafast physics and chemistry research. Based on attosecond pump–probe schemes, ultrafast X-ray photoelectron imaging of molecules was used to monitor the coherent electron dynamics which is created by an XUV pulse. We performed simulations on the molecular ion H 2 + by numerically solving time-dependent Schrödinger equations. It was found that the X-ray photoelectron angular and momentum distributions depend on the time delay between the XUV pump and soft X-ray probe pulses. Varying the polarization and helicity of the soft X-ray probe pulse gave rise to a modulation of the time-resolved photoelectron distributions. The present results provide a new approach for exploring ultrafast coherent electron dynamics and charge migration in reactions of molecules on the attosecond time scale.

Abstract
Probing molecular chirality, right-handed or left-handed chiral molecules, is one of the central issues in chemistry and biochemistry. The conventional theory of optical activity measurements such as circular dichroism has been derived in the second-order processes involving electric and magnetic dipole moments, and the signals are very weak. We propose an efficient enantiomer-probing scenario for chiral aromatic ring molecules based on photoinduced coherent π-electron rotations. In our model, the resultant laser-induced currents themselves produce a strong magnetic field. The principle for probing molecular chirality is a utilization of dynamic Stark effects of two electronic excited states. These electronic states subjected to strong nonresonant linearly polarized UV lasers become degenerate to create enantiomer-specific electronic angular momentum. A pair of enantiomers of phenylalanine was taken as an example. Enantiomer-specific coherent magnetic fluxes on the order of a few teslas can be generated in several tens of femtoseconds. The direct detection of strong coherent magnetic fluxes could be carried out by time-resolved magnetic force microscopy experiments. The results provide important implications for the measurement of effective probing of chiral aromatic molecules.

Abstract
We present results for quantum optimal control (QOC) of the coherent π electron ring currents in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Since PAHs consist of a number of condensed benzene rings, in principle, there exist various coherent ring patterns. These include the ring current localized to a designated benzene ring, the perimeter ring current that flows along the edge of the PAH, and the middle ring current of PAHs having an odd number of benzene rings such as anthracene. In the present QOC treatment, the best target wavefunction for generation of the ring current through a designated path is determined by a Lagrange multiplier method. The target function is integrated into the ordinary QOC theory. To demonstrate the applicability of the QOC procedure, we took naphthalene and anthracene as the simplest examples of linear PAHs. The mechanisms of ring current generation were clarified by analyzing the temporal evolutions of the electronic excited states after coherent excitation by UV pulses or (UV+IR) pulses as well as those of electric fields of the optimal laser pulses. Time-dependent simulations of the perimeter ring current and middle ring current of anthracene, which are induced by analytical electric fields of UV pulsed lasers, were performed to reproduce the QOC results.

Abstract
Ultrafast charge migration is of fundamental importance to photoinduced chemical reactions. However, exploring such a quantum dynamical process requires demanding spatial and temporal resolutions. We show how electronic coherence dynamics induced in molecules by a circularly polarized UV pulse can be tracked by using a time-delayed circularly polarized attosecond X-ray pulse. The X-ray probe spectra retrieve an image at different time delays, encoding instantaneous pump-induced circular charge migration information on an attosecond time scale. A time-dependent ultrafast electronic coherence associated with the periodical circular ring currents shows a strong dependence on the helicity of the UV pulse, which may provide a direct approach to access and control the electronic quantum coherence dynamics in photophysical and photochemical reactions in real time.

Abstract
Control of π-electrons in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is one of the fundamental issues in optoelectronics for ultrafast optical switching devices. We have proposed an effective scenario for design of the generation of coherent ring currents in naphthalene (D2h), which is the smallest unit of planar PAHs. It has been demonstrated by using quantum chemical calculations and quantum optimal control (QOC) simulations that two types of ring currents, parallel and antiparallel, can be generated by resonance excitations by two linearly polarized lasers. A parallel (antiparallel) ring current means that the currents of two benzene rings run in the same (opposite) directions. The two types of ring currents may be experimentally identified by magnetic force microscopy. The QOC simulations indicate that a parallel ring current can be generated by using continuous wave and Gaussian pulse lasers with their time delay without relying on a sophisticated experimental apparatus. The present results provide a guiding principle of coherent π-electronics in PAHs for next-generation organic optical switching devices.

Abstract
Controlling π-electrons with delocalized character is one of the fundamental issues in femtosecond and attosecond chemistry. Localization of π-electron rotation by using laser pulses is expected to play an essential role in nanoscience. The π-electron rotation created at a selected aromatic ring of a single molecule induces a local intense electromagnetic field, which is a new type of ultrafast optical control functioning. We propose a quantum localization of coherent π-electron angular momentum in (P)-2,2'-biphenol, which is a simple, covalently linked chiral aromatic ring chain molecule. The localization considered here consists of sequential two steps: the first step is to localize the π-electron angular momentum at a selected ring of the two benzene rings, and the other is to maintain the localization. Optimal control theory was used for obtaining the optimized electric fields of linearly polarized laser pulses to realize the localization. The optimal electric fields and the resultant coherent electronic dynamics are analyzed.
