Radiative lifetime measurement of the a 3Σ+ metastable state of NO+ using a new type of electrostatic ion trap

Characterization of a new electrostatic storage ring for photofragmentation experiments

We describe the design of and the first commissioning experiments with a newly constructed electrostatic storage ring named SAPHIRA (Storage Ring in Aarhus for PHoton-Ion Reaction Analysis). With an intense beam of Cu(-) at 4 keV, the storage ring is characterized in terms of the stored ion beam decay rate, the longitudinal spreading of an injected ion bunch, as well as the direct measurements of the transverse spatial distributions under different conditions of storage. The ion storage stability in SAPHIRA was investigated systematically in a selected region of its electrical configuration space.

Decay rate measurement of the first vibrationally excited state of MgH+ in a cryogenic Paul trap

We present a method to measure the decay rate of the first excited vibrational state of polar molecular ions that are part of a Coulomb crystal in a cryogenic linear Paul trap. Specifically, we have monitored the decay of the |ν = 1, J = 1)(X) towards the |ν = 0, J = 0)(X) level in MgH+ by saturated laser excitation of the |ν = 0, J = 2)(X)-|ν = 1, J = 1)(X) transition followed by state selective resonance enhanced two-photon dissociation out of the |ν = 0, J=2)(X) level. The experimentally observed rate of 6.32(0.69) s(-1) is in excellent agreement with the theory value of 6.13(0.03) s(-1) (this Letter). The technique enables the determination of decay rates, and thus absorption strengths, with an accuracy at the few percent level.

Lifetime measurements in an electrostatic ion beam trap using image charge monitoring

A technique for mass-selective lifetime measurements of keV ions in a linear electrostatic ion beam trap is presented. The technique is based on bunching the ions using a weak RF potential and non-destructive ion detection by a pick-up electrode. This method has no mass-limitation, possesses the advantage of inherent mass-selectivity, and offers a possibility of measuring simultaneously the lifetimes of different ion species with no need for prior mass-selection.

Lifetime and yield of metastable Ar2+ ions

Ar2(+) ions produced in a cooled supersonic expansion by electron-impact ionization are accelerated at 2.5 keV and kept during few milliseconds inside a linear electrostatic trap. The lifetime of the metastable Ar2(+) ion is determined from the measurement of the rate of the argon atoms escaping the trap. The lifetime and the relative metastable populations are measured as a function of the pressure and temperature in the supersonic expansion, i.e., of the mean cluster size. Possible mechanisms responsible for the metastable formation are discussed.

Ion motion synchronization in an ion-trap resonator

Using a new type of ion trap, we demonstrate that the length of a packet of charged particles oscillating between two electrostatic mirrors will remain constant under special conditions. The effect can be understood in terms of phase synchronization, where, in a rather counterintuitive way, the repulsive Coulomb interaction between the ions actually holds the packet together. Application of this effect for mass spectrometry is discussed.

Fourier transform time-of-flight mass spectrometry in an electrostatic ion beam trap

We report on the application of an electrostatic ion beam trap as a mass spectrometer. The instrument is analogous to an optical resonator; ions are trapped between focusing mirrors. The storage time is limited by the residual gas pressure and reaches up to several seconds, resulting in long ion flight paths. The oscillation of ion bunches between the mirrors is monitored by nondestructive image charge detection in a field-free region and mass spectra are obtained via Fourier transform. The principle of operation is demonstrated by measuring the mass spectrum of trapped Ar+ and Xe+ particles, produced by a standard electron impact ion source. Also, mass spectra of heavier PEGnNa+ and bradykinin ions from a pulsed MALDI ion source were obtained. The long ion flight path, combined with mass-independent charge detection, makes this system particularly interesting for the investigation of large molecules.
