Reversibility of dynamics and multiple-quantum coherences

In spin systems, the decay of the Loschmidt echo in the time-reversal experiment (evolution-perturbation-time-reversed evolution) is linked to the generation of multiple-quantum (MQ) coherences. Unlimited growth of the MQ coherences leads to irreversibility of dynamics. In some cases, one can expect that the deviation of the Loschmidt echo and the second moment of the MQ intensities distribution are linear in time. The criteria of such behavior, called weak irreversibility, are formulated. The proposed approach can be extended beyond spin systems, in order to analyze some general aspects of reversibility of many-body quantum dynamics.

Communication: Long-lived states of nuclear spins in solids

We report an observation of extremely long-lived spin states in systems of dipolar-coupled nuclear spins in solids. The "suspended echo" experiment uses a simple stimulated echo pulse sequence and creates non-equilibrium states which live many orders of magnitude longer than the characteristic time of spin-spin dynamics T2. Large amounts of information can be encoded in such long-lived states and subsequently retrieved by an application of a single "reading" pulse.

Dynamic nuclear polarization assisted spin diffusion for the solid effect case

The dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) process in solids depends on the magnitudes of hyperfine interactions between unpaired electrons and their neighboring (core) nuclei, and on the dipole-dipole interactions between all nuclei in the sample. The polarization enhancement of the bulk nuclei has been typically described in terms of a hyperfine-assisted polarization of a core nucleus by microwave irradiation followed by a dipolar-assisted spin diffusion process in the core-bulk nuclear system. This work presents a theoretical approach for the study of this combined process using a density matrix formalism. In particular, solid effect DNP on a single electron coupled to a nuclear spin system is considered, taking into account the interactions between the spins as well as the main relaxation mechanisms introduced via the electron, nuclear, and cross-relaxation rates. The basic principles of the DNP-assisted spin diffusion mechanism, polarizing the bulk nuclei, are presented, and it is shown that the polarization of the core nuclei and the spin diffusion process should not be treated separately. To emphasize this observation the coherent mechanism driving the pure spin diffusion process is also discussed. In order to demonstrate the effects of the interactions and relaxation mechanisms on the enhancement of the nuclear polarization, model systems of up to ten spins are considered and polarization buildup curves are simulated. A linear chain of spins consisting of a single electron coupled to a core nucleus, which in turn is dipolar coupled to a chain of bulk nuclei, is considered. The interaction and relaxation parameters of this model system were chosen in a way to enable a critical analysis of the polarization enhancement of all nuclei, and are not far from the values of (13)C nuclei in frozen (glassy) organic solutions containing radicals, typically used in DNP at high fields. Results from the simulations are shown, demonstrating the complex dependences of the DNP-assisted spin diffusion process on variations of the relevant parameters. In particular, the effect of the spin lattice relaxation times on the polarization buildup times and the resulting end polarization are discussed, and the quenching of the polarizations by the hyperfine interaction is demonstrated.

Experimental demonstration of quantum state expansion in a cluster of dipolar-coupled nuclear spins

It is experimentally demonstrated that an arbitrary quantum state of a single spin 1/2, a| upward arrow+b| downward arrow, can be converted into a superposition of the two ferromagnetic states of a spin cluster: a| upward arrow upward arrow... upward arrow upward arrow+b| downward arrow downward arrow... downward arrow downward arrow. The physical system is a cluster of seven dipolar-coupled nuclear spins of single-labeled 13C-benzene molecules in a liquid-crystalline matrix. In this complex system, the pseudopure ground state and the required controlled unitary transformations have been implemented. The experimental scheme can be considered as an explicit model of quantum measurement.

NMR polarization echoes in a nematic liquid crystal

We have modified the polarization echo (PE) sequence through the incorporation of Lee-Goldburg cross polarization steps to quench the 1H-1H dipolar dynamics. In this way, the 13C becomes an ideal local probe to inject and detect polarization in the proton system. This improvement made possible the observation of the local polarization P(00)(t) and polarization echoes in the interphenyl proton of the liquid crystal N-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-4-butylaniline. The decay of P(00)(t) was well fitted to an exponential law with a characteristic time tau(C) approximately 310 micros. The hierarchy of the intramolecular dipolar couplings determines a dynamical bottleneck that justifies the use of the Fermi Golden Rule to obtain a spectral density consistent with the structural parameters. The time evolution of P(00)(t) was reversed by the PE sequence generating echoes at the time expected by the scaling of the dipolar Hamiltonian. This indicates that the reversible 1H-1H dipolar interaction is the main contribution to the local polarization decrease and that the exponential decay for P(00)(t) does not imply irreversibility. The attenuation of the echoes follows a Gaussian law with a characteristic time tau(phi) approximately 527 micros. The shape and magnitude of the characteristic time of the PE decay suggest that it is dominated by the unperturbed homonuclear dipolar Hamiltonian. This means that tau(phi) is an intrinsic property of the dipolar coupled network and not of other degrees of freedom. In this case, one cannot unambiguously identify the mechanism that produces the decoherence of the dipolar order. This is because even weak interactions are able to break the fragile multiple coherences originated on the dipolar evolution, hindering its reversal. Other schemes to investigate these underlying mechanisms are proposed.
