A new Gaussian MCTDH program: implementation and validation on the levels of the water and glycine molecules

The loss of the property of locality of the kernel in high-dimensional Gaussian process regression on the example of the fitting of molecular potential energy surfaces

Kernel-based methods, including Gaussian process regression (GPR) and generally kernel ridge regression, have been finding increasing use in computational chemistry, including the fitting of potential energy surfaces and density functionals in high-dimensional feature spaces. Kernels of the Matern family, such as Gaussian-like kernels (basis functions), are often used which allow imparting to them the meaning of covariance functions and formulating GPR as an estimator of the mean of a Gaussian distribution. The notion of locality of the kernel is critical for this interpretation. It is also critical to the formulation of multi-zeta type basis functions widely used in computational chemistry. We show, on the example of fitting of molecular potential energy surfaces of increasing dimensionality, the practical disappearance of the property of locality of a Gaussian-like kernel in high dimensionality. We also formulate a multi-zeta approach to the kernel and show that it significantly improves the quality of regression in low dimensionality but loses any advantage in high dimensionality, which is attributed to the loss of the property of locality.

Modified Gaussian Wave Packet Method for Calculating Initial State Wave Functions in Photodissociation

A modified Gaussian wave packet relaxation method is proposed to calculate the ground state wave function using an expansion of frozen Gaussian wave packets. This new procedure consists of two steps. In the first step, a multidimensional Gaussian product placed at the ground state equilibrium geometry is propagated in imaginary time. The relaxation optimizes the widths of the one-dimensional Gaussians. In the second step, additional Gaussian wave packets with the same widths are placed near the equilibrium geometry, and the corresponding expansion coefficients are optimized using the same relaxation method. This new algorithm is tested in photodissociation of NOCl and NH₃, and the results show good agreement with the exact results in the energy, wave function, and absorption spectrum. In particular, the highly structured absorption spectrum of NH₃ is reproduced, underscoring the accuracy of both the initial wave packet and the excited state propagation.

A diabatic electronic state system to describe the internal conversion of azulene

A diabatic system of two electronic potential energy surfaces as well as the coupling between them is presented. The system is to be used to study the dynamics of the S₁ → S₀ internal conversion of azulene and is based on single point calculations of the minima of the two surfaces and a dipole-quadrupole (DQ) diabatization. Based on this, a couple of harmonic diabatic surfaces together with a linear coupling surface have been devised. Some preliminary dynamics results are shown.

Simulation of Vibronic Spectra of Flexible Systems: Hybrid DVR-Harmonic Approaches

Our general framework for the simulation of vibrational signatures in electronic spectra has been extended to treat one large-amplitude motion (LAM) at the anharmonic level, coupled to the other small-amplitude motions (SAM) treated as harmonic. The coupling between LAM and SAM is minimized thanks to the use of delocalized internal coordinates, which are built automatically from the molecular topology. General LAMs can be employed, ranging from intrinsic reaction coordinates to rigid or flexible paths based on the distinguished coordinate approach. The anharmonic model is based on a fully numerical method based on the discrete variable representation (DVR) theory, supporting different types of boundary conditions. The inclusion of this model in a general-purpose electronic structure code makes available to the user a large panel of quantum chemistry models, for both isolated and condensed phases. The flexibility and reliability of the new framework are illustrated by some case studies, covering various types of LAMs, ranging from a small test case, the photoelectron spectrum of ammonia, to larger systems, such as phenylanthracene and cyclobutanone.

A Modular Implementation for the Simulation of 1D and 2D Solid-State NMR Spectra of Quadrupolar Nuclei in the Virtual Multifrequency Spectrometer-Draw Graphical Interface

We present the implementation of the solid state (SoS)NMR module for the simulation of several 1D and 2D NMR spectra of all the elements in the periodic table in the virtual multifrequency spectrometer (VMS). This module is fully integrated with the graphical user interface of VMS (VMS-Draw) [Licari et al., J. Comput. Chem. 36, 2015, 321-334], a freeware tool which allows a user-friendly handling of structures and analyses of advanced spectroscopical properties of chemical compounds-from model systems to real-world applications. Besides the numerous modules already available in VMS for the study of electronic, optical, vibrational, vibronic, and EPR properties, here the simulation of NMR spectra is presented with a particular emphasis on those techniques usually employed to investigate solid state systems. The SoSNMR module benefits from its ability to work under both periodic and nonperiodic conditions, such that small molecules/molecular clusters can be treated, as well as extended three-dimensional systems enforcing (or not) translational periodicity. These features allow VMS to simulate spectra resulting from NMR calculations by some popular quantum chemistry codes, namely Gaussian09/16, Castep, and Quantum Espresso. The effectiveness of the SoSNMR module of VMS is examined throughout the manuscript, and applied to simulate 1D static, MAS, and VAS NMR spectra as well as 2D correlation (90°, MAS) and MQMAS spectra of active NMR nuclei embedded in different amorphous and crystalline systems of actual interest in chemistry and material science. Finally, the program is able to simulate the spectra of both the total ensemble of spin-active nuclei present in the system and of subensembles differentiated depending on the chemical environment of the first and second coordination sphere in a very general way applicable to any kind of systems.

Nonadiabatic photodynamics of phenol on a realistic potential energy surface by a novel multilayer Gaussian MCTDH program

We report the main features of a new implementation of the Gaussian Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree (G-MCTDH) model. The code allows effective computations of time-dependent phenomena, including calculation of vibronic spectra (in one or more electronic states), relative state populations etc., with the possibility of a multilayer formulation. We have validated the code on the diabatic surfaces recently published by Truhlar and coworkers to study the nonadiabatic photodynamics of phenol. Using an Ehrenfest-like, single-nuclear-configuration (but in a fully quantum formalism) model we calculate the optical spectrum and relative state populations of the system as a function of time.
