Rotational relaxation in molecular hydrogen and deuterium: Theory versus acoustic experiments

Laboratory study of rotationally inelastic collisions of CO2 at low temperatures

The rotational relaxation of CO2 by inelastic collisions has been studied in three supersonic jets. The jets were probed by means of Raman spectroscopy with high spectral and spatial resolutions, measuring the rotational populations and the total number density. The time evolution of the rotational populations was analyzed by means of a kinetic master equation, with the help of the energy-corrected sudden power law to relate the numerous state-to-state rate (STS rates) coefficients. In the thermal range investigated, 60-260 K, the STS rates decrease with increasing temperature and with increasing change in the rotational quantum number. Other quantities of interest for fluid dynamics, such as the rotational collision number, the relaxation cross section, and the bulk viscosity, have been derived from the STS rates.

Experimental study of rotational relaxation for D2(1,12) in collisions with N2

The rotational relaxation behavior of D2(1,12) in a D2-N2 mixture was investigated using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) technique. The rovibrational level v = 1 and J = 12 of D2 was selectively excited through stimulated Raman pumping while monitoring the temporal evolution of population for D2(1, J ≤ 12) molecules using time-resolved CARS spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the rotational relaxation processes of D2(1,12) encompass both multi-quantum relaxation and continuous single-quantum relaxation. When α, the molar ratio of N2, is less than 0.5, D2(1,12) predominantly undergoes a single quantum relaxation process transition. However, when α ≥ 0.5, the multi-quantum relaxation mechanism gradually predominates. The total rotational relaxation rate coefficients of D2(1,12) collisions with N2 and D2 at 295 K were determined to be 3.974 × 10-14 and 1.179 × 10-14 cm3 s-1, respectively. The temperature dependence of rotational relaxation rate of D2(1,12) was investigated within the temperature range of 295-453 K. With increasing temperature, the dominant relaxation process exhibited an accelerated behavior, while the minor relaxation process remained largely unaffected. The rotational temperature of the D2 molecule at various N2 molar ratios was determined through the utilization of Boltzmann plots. The rotational temperature undergoes a rapid decline within 2 μs, corresponding to the near-resonant rotation-vibration relaxation process of D2(1,12) collisions with N2. The system reaches a quasi-equilibrium state when the delay time is 3 μs. The findings of this study can serve as a valuable empirical basis for further validation of the kinetic theory and simulation.

Cold Collisions of Ro-Vibrationally Excited D2 Molecules

The H₂ + H₂ system has long been considered a benchmark system for ro-vibrational energy transfer in bimolecular collisions. However, most studies thus far have focused on collisions involving H₂ molecules in the ground vibrational level or in the first excited vibrational state. While H₂ + H₂/HD collisions have received wide attention due to the important role they play in astrophysics, D₂ + D₂ collisions have received much less attention. Recently, Zhou et al. [ Nat. Chem. 2022, 14, 658-663, DOI: 10.1038/s41557-022-00926-z] examined stereodynamic aspects of rotational energy transfer in collisions of two aligned D₂ molecules prepared in the v = 2 vibrational level and j = 2 rotational level. Here, we report quantum calculations of rotational and vibrational energy transfer in collisions of two D₂ molecules prepared in vibrational levels up to v = 2 and identify key resonance features that contribute to the angular distribution in the experimental results of Zhou et al. The quantum scattering calculations were performed in full dimensionality and using the rigid-rotor approximation using a recently developed highly accurate six-dimensional potential energy surface for the H₄ system that allows descriptions of collisions involving highly vibrationally excited H₂ and its isotopologues.

Predicting second virial coefficients of organic and inorganic compounds using Gaussian process regression

We show that by using intuitive and accessible molecular features it is possible to predict the temperature-dependent second virial coefficient of organic and inorganic compounds with Gaussian process regression. In particular, we built a low dimensional representation of features based on intrinsic molecular properties, topology and physical properties relevant for the characterization of molecule-molecule interactions. The featurization was used to predict second virial coefficients in the interpolative regime with a relative error ⪅1% and to extrapolate the prediction to temperatures outside of the training range for each compound in the dataset with a relative error of 2.1%. Additionally, the model's predictive abilities were extended to organic molecules unseen in the training process, yielding a prediction with a relative error of 2.7%. Test molecules must be well-represented in the training set by instances of their families, which are high in variety. The method shows a generally better performance when compared to several semi-empirical procedures employed in the prediction of the quantity. Therefore, apart from being robust, the present Gaussian process regression model is extensible to a variety of organic and inorganic compounds.
