"Nonlinear" pursuit of understanding pollutant accumulation and chemistry at environmental and biological interfaces

Over the past few decades, the public recognition of the prevalence of certain classes of pollutants, such as perfluoroalkyl substances and nanoplastics, within the environment, has sparked growing concerns over their potential impact on environmental and human health. Within both environmental and biological systems, the adsorption and structural organization of pollutants at aqueous interfaces can greatly impact the chemical reactivity and transformation. Experimentally probing chemical behavior at interfaces can often pose a problem due to bulk solvated molecules convoluting molecular signatures from interfacial molecules. To solve this problem, there exist interface-specific nonlinear spectroscopy techniques that can directly probe both macroscopic planar interfaces and nanoplastic interfaces in aqueous environments. These techniques can provide essential information such as chemical adsorption, structure, and reactivity at interfaces. In this perspective, these techniques are presented with obvious advantages for studying the chemical properties of pollutants adsorbed to environmental and biological interfaces.

Solvation, Surface Propensity, and Chemical Reactions of Solutes at Atmospheric Liquid-Vapor Interfaces

surface is covered by oceans, a large number of liquid aerosol particles fill the air, and clouds hold a tiny but critical fraction of Earth's water in the air to influence our climate and hydrology, enabling the lives of humans and ecosystems. The surfaces of these liquids provide the interface for the transfer of gases, for nucleation processes, and for catalyzing important chemical reactions. Coupling a range of spectroscopic tools to liquid microjets has become an important approach to better understanding dynamics, structure, and chemistry at liquid interfaces. Liquid microjets offer stability in vacuum and ambient pressure environments, thus also allowing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) with manageable efforts in terms of differential pumping. Liquid microjets are operated at speeds sufficient to allow for a locally equilibrated surface in terms of water dynamics and solute surface partitioning. XPS is based on the emission of core-level electrons, the binding energy of which is selective for the element and its chemical environment. Inelastic scattering of electrons establishes the probing depth of XPS in the nanometer range and thus its surface sensitivity.In this Account, we focus on aqueous solutions relevant to the surface of oceans, aqueous aerosols, or cloudwater. We are interested in understanding solvation and acid dissociation at the interface, interfacial aspects of reactions with gas-phase reactants, and the interplay of ions with organic molecules at the interface. The strategy is to obtain a link between the molecular-level picture and macroscopic properties and reactivity in the atmospheric context.We show consistency between surface tension and XPS for a range of surface-active organic species as an important proof for interrogating an equilibrated liquid surface. Measurements with organic acids and amines offer important insight into the question of apparent acidity or basicity at the interface. Liquid microjet XPS has settled the debate of the surface enhancement of halide ions, shown using the example of bromide and its oxidation products. Despite the absence of a strong enhancement for the bromide ion, its rate of oxidation by ozone is surface catalyzed through the stabilization of the bromide ozonide intermediate at the interface. In another reaction system, the one between Fe²⁺ and H₂O₂, a similar intermediate in the form of highly valent iron species could not be detected by XPS under the experimental conditions employed, shedding light on the abundance of this intermediate in the environment but also on the constraints within which surface species can be detected. Emphasizing the importance of electrostatic effects, we show how a cationic surfactant attracts charged bromide anions to the interface, accompanied by enhanced oxidation rates by ozone, overriding the role of surfactants as a barrier for the access of gas-phase reactants. The reactivity and structure at interfaces thus result from a subtle balance between hygroscopic and hydrophobic interactions, electrostatic effects, and the structural properties of both liquids and solutes.

Windowless detection geometry for sum frequency scattering spectroscopy in the C-D and amide I regions

Understanding the structure and chemistry of nanoscopic surfaces is an important challenge for biointerface sciences. Sum frequency scattering (SFS) spectroscopy can specifically probe the surfaces of nanoparticles, vesicles, liposomes, and other materials relevant to biomaterial research, and, as a vibrational spectroscopy method, it can provide molecular level information about the surface chemistry. SFS is particularly promising to probe the structure of proteins, and other biological molecules, at nanoparticle surfaces. Here, amide I spectra can provide information about protein folding and orientation, while spectra in the C-D and C-H stretching regions allow experiments to determine the mode of interaction between particle surfaces and proteins. Methods used currently employ a closed liquid cell or cuvette, which works extremely well for C-H and phosphate regions but is often impeded in the amide I and C-D regions by a strong background signal that originates from the window material of the sample cells. Here, we discuss a windowless geometry for collecting background-free and high-fidelity SFS spectra in the amide I and C-D regions. We demonstrate the improvement in spectra quality by comparing SFS spectra of unextruded, multilamellar vesicles in a sample cuvette with those recorded using the windowless geometry. The sample geometry we propose will enable new experiments using SFS as a probe for protein-particle interactions.

Identifying the Molecular Orientation and Clusters in the Liquid-Vapor Interface of 1-Propanol by Time-Delayed Mass Spectrometry

Structural inhomogeneity of the liquid-vapor interface, such as the spatial orientation of molecular specific groups and the non-uniform distribution of hydrogen-bonded (HB) clusters, is crucial for understanding the physicochemical processes therein. Although the molecular orientation at the outermost layer was authenticated, to date, direct experimental evidence of the in situ existence of different-sized HB clusters, as a long-standing theoretical argument, is still lacking. Here we report time-delayed electron-impact tandem mass spectrometry, and its powerful ability to identify the local structures of the liquid-vapor interface of 1-propanol is demonstrated not only by mapping the molecular orientations both in the outermost layer and in the subsurface but also by validating the existence of the HB molecular dimers in the subsurface by detecting their protonated ions. We further distinguish two different sources of the protonated dimer: the gas-phase protonation of the neutral dimer that evaporates in advance and the time-lag evaporation of the protonated dimer produced in the subsurface. This methodology is a brand-new way to explore the microstructures and the electron-driven chemical reactions in different local regions of the liquid-vapor interface.

Time-delayed mass spectrometry of the low-energy electron impact with a liquid beam surface

We set up an experimental apparatus to investigate the low-energy electron impact with a liquid beam surface, in which a cylindrical liquid beam with a diameter of 25 μm emits as the laminar flow from a microjet and the positively charged ions produced by the electron-impact ionizations are detected with a linear time-of-flight mass spectrometer. We propose a time-delayed mass spectrometry for this apparatus to identify the cationic fragments produced on the liquid surface, in which the application of the ion extracting pulse is delayed with different time intervals after the electron beam pulse. Sensitivity and specificity of the present methodology are demonstrated by the combinational experiments of the gas-phase and liquid ethanol. In comparison with the gas-phase experiments, the ion peaks become much broader in the mass spectra of the liquid beam, primarily due to the molecular evaporation and diffusion. After delaying with about 2 μs, we find that the hydrocarbon ions are ultimately the predominant products in the mass spectra of the liquid ethanol and they are proposed to be produced on the liquid surface. Above observations are in line with the widely accepted picture of the molecular orientation on the liquid surface; namely, the ethanol's CH₃-CH₂- group on the liquid surface prefers to be oriented outside. Therefore, we demonstrate a new mass spectrometry to explore the molecular structures of the liquid surface.
