Hyperfine-resolved spectra of HDS together with a global ro-vibrational analysis

Despite their chemical simplicity, the spectroscopic investigation of light hydrides, such as hydrogen sulfide, is challenging due to strong hyperfine interactions and/or anomalous centrifugal-distortion effects. Several hydrides have already been detected in the interstellar medium, and the list includes H2S and some of its isotopologues. Astronomical observation of isotopic species and, in particular, those bearing deuterium is important to gain insights into the evolutionary stage of astronomical objects and to shed light on interstellar chemistry. These observations require a very accurate knowledge of the rotational spectrum, which is so far limited for mono-deuterated hydrogen sulfide, HDS. To fill this gap, high-level quantum-chemical calculations and sub-Doppler measurements have been combined for the investigation of the hyperfine structure of the rotational spectrum in the millimeter- and submillimeter-wave region. In addition to the determination of accurate hyperfine parameters, these new measurements together with the available literature data allowed us to extend the centrifugal analysis using a Watson-type Hamiltonian and a Hamiltonian-independent approach based on the Measured Active Ro-Vibrational Energy Levels (MARVEL) procedure. The present study thus permits to model the rotational spectrum of HDS from the microwave to far-infrared region with great accuracy, thereby accounting for the effect of the electric and magnetic interactions due to the deuterium and hydrogen nuclei.

Quantum Chemical Approaches to the Calculation of NMR Parameters: From Fundamentals to Recent Advances

Quantum chemical methods for the calculation of indirect NMR spin–spin coupling constants and chemical shifts are always in progress. They never stay the same due to permanently developing computational facilities, which open new perspectives and create new challenges every now and then. This review starts from the fundamentals of the nonrelativistic and relativistic theory of nuclear magnetic resonance parameters, and gradually moves towards the discussion of the most popular common and newly developed methodologies for quantum chemical modeling of NMR spectra.

Measurement of local magnetic fields in actinide tetrafluorides

Fluorine-19 magnetic shielding tensors have been measured in a series of actinide tetrafluorides (AnF₄) by solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Tetravalent actinide centers with 0-8 valence electrons can form tetrafluorides with the same monoclinic structure type, making these compounds an attractive choice for a systematic study of the variation in the electronic structure across the 5f row of the Periodic Table. Pronounced deviations from predictions based on localized valence electron models have been detected by these experiments, which suggests that this approach may be used as a quantitative probe of electronic correlations.

Deuterium isotope effects on 17O nuclear shielding in a single water molecule from NMR gas phase measurements

The ¹⁷O NMR shielding constants of the isolated molecules: H₂O, HOD and D₂O were measured in the gas phase; the isotope effects were established and small nonadditivity was stated.

17O and 1H NMR spectral parameters in isolated water molecules

Small amounts of water enriched in oxygen-17 were studied by 17O and 1H NMR in binary gaseous mixtures with Xe, Kr, CHF3 and CH3F and CO2. The distinct linear dependences of 17O and 1H chemical shifts and 1J(17O,1H) spin-spin coupling on the density of every gas solvent were measured. After the extrapolation of experimental results to zero density the relevant parameters in the isolated H217O molecule were determined. The same procedure was applied for H216O when its proton chemical shift was analyzed but the secondary isotope effect in the 1H shielding of H217O and H216O molecules was too small for detection. As shown, all the intermolecular effects in nuclear magnetic shielding are negative and these effects are more significant for 17O nuclei than for protons. It is consistent with the appropriate gas-to-liquid shifts of water which also indicate deshielding effects for both the investigated nuclei. On the other hand, the 1J0(17O,1H) coupling constant in H217O, which is completely free from intermolecular interactions, considerably differs from the 1J(17O,1H) experimental values obtained for water in liquid solutions. The present experimental data of the isolated H217O molecule are compared with selected results of shielding and spin-spin coupling calculations available from the literature and with the recent experimental data for a water molecule encapsulated in the C60 fullerene. Additionally, on the basis of actual results the magnetic dipole moment of the 17O nucleus is revalued for greater accuracy.

Insight into the local environment of magnesium and calcium in low-coordination-number organo-complexes using 25Mg and 43Ca solid-state NMR: a DFT study

With the increasing number of organocalcium and organomagnesium complexes under development, there is a real need to be able to characterize in detail their local environment in order to fully rationalize their reactivity. For crystalline structures, in cases when diffraction techniques are insufficient, additional local spectroscopies like ²⁵Mg and ⁴³Ca solid-state NMR may provide valuable information to help fully establish the local environment of the metal ions. In this current work, a prospective DFT investigation on crystalline magnesium and calcium complexes involving low-coordination numbers and N-bearing organic ligands was carried out, in which the ²⁵Mg and ⁴³Ca NMR parameters [isotropic chemical shift, chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) and quadrupolar parameters] were calculated for each structure. The analysis of the calculated parameters in relation to the local environment of the metal ions revealed that they are highly sensitive to very small changes in geometry/distances, and hence that they could be used to assist in the refinement of crystal structures. Moreover, such calculations provide a guideline as to how the NMR measurements will need to be performed, revealing that these will be very challenging.

On the calculation of second-order magnetic properties using subsystem approaches in a relativistic framework

The implementation of second-order magnetic properties in a frozen density embedding scheme in a four component relativistic framework is outlined and applied to model H₂X–H₂O systems (X = Se, Te, Po).

Relativistic Calculations of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Parameters

Relativistic effects are important for the accurate evaluation of the observables of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, the nuclear magnetic shielding and the indirect spin–spin coupling tensors. Some of the most notable relativistic effects, in particular for light elements in the vicinity of heavy nuclei, are due to spin–orbit effects, an effect difficult to evaluate when starting from a non-relativistic wavefunction. Two- and four-component relativistic methods include spin–orbit effects variationally, and the recent improvements in the computational efficiency of these methods open new opportunities for accurate calculations of NMR parameters also for molecules with heavy elements. We here present an overview of the different approximations that have been introduced for calculating relativistic effects with two- and four-component methods and how these methods can be used to calculate the NMR parameters. We will also give some examples of systems that have been studied computationally with two- and four-component relativistic methods and discuss the importance of relativistic effects on the shielding and indirect spin–spin coupling constants.
