Synchrotron-based double imaging photoelectron/photoion coincidence spectroscopy of radicals produced in a flow tube: OH and OD

Photoelectron spectrum of the pyridyl radical

We report the photoelectron spectrum of the pyridyl radical (C5H4N), a species of interest in astrochemistry and combustion. The radicals were produced via hydrogen abstraction in a fluorine discharge and ionized with synchrotron radiation. Mass-selected slow photoelectron spectra of the products were obtained from photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectra. A Franck-Condon simulation based on computed geometries and vibrational frequencies identified contributions of the o- and p-pyridyl radicals. For the o-isomer an adiabatic ionisation energy of 7.70 eV was obtained, in excellent agreement with a computed value of 7.72 eV. The spectrum of o-pyridyl is characterized by a long progression in an in-plane bending mode and the N-C stretch that contains the radical site.

Refining the thermochemical properties of CF, SiF, and their cations by combining photoelectron spectroscopy, quantum chemical calculations, and the Active Thermochemical Tables approach

Fluorinated species have a pivotal role in semiconductor material chemistry and some of them have been detected beyond the Earth's atmosphere. Achieving good energy accuracy on fluorinated species using quantum chemical calculations has long been a challenge. In addition, obtaining direct experimental thermochemical quantities has also proved difficult. Here, we report the threshold photoelectron and photoion yield spectra of SiF and CF radicals generated with a fluorine reactor. The spectra were analysed with the support of ab initio calculations, resulting in new experimental values for the adiabatic ionisation energies of both CF (9.128 ± 0.006 eV) and SiF (7.379 ± 0.009 eV). Using these values, the underlying thermochemical network of Active Thermochemical Tables was updated, providing further refined enthalpies of formation and dissociation energies of CF, SiF, and their cationic counterparts.

Photoelectron Photoion Coincidence Spectroscopy of Biradicals

The electronic structure of biradicals is characterized by the presence of two unpaired electrons in degenerate or near-degenerate molecular orbitals. In particular, some of the most relevant species are highly reactive, difficult to generate cleanly and can only be studied in the gas phase or in matrices. Unveiling their electronic structure is, however, of paramount interest to understand their chemistry. Photoelectron photoion coincidence (PEPICO) spectroscopy is an excellent approach to explore the electronic states of biradicals, because it enables a direct correlation between the detected ions and electrons. This permits to extract unique vibrationally resolved photoion mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectra (ms-TPES) to obtain insight in the electronic structure of both the neutral and the cation. In this review we highlight most recent advances on the spectroscopy of biradicals and biradicaloids, utilizing PEPICO spectroscopy and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron radiation.

Threshold photoelectron spectroscopy of trimethylborane and its pyrolysis products

Trimethylborane (TMB) and its chemistry upon pyrolysis have been investigated by threshold photoelectron spectroscopy. TMB shows an unstructured spectrum and its adiabatic ionization energy (IE_ad) has been determined to be 9.93 ± 0.1 eV. Dissociative photoionization induces a methyl radical loss in TMB and the barrier to dissociation in the cation is measured to be 0.65 ± 0.1 eV. Upon pyrolysis methane loss dominates, leading to C₂H₅B, which can exist in five different isomeric structures. Quantum chemical calculations were used to investigate possible methane loss mechanisms as well as the isomerization pathways on the C₂H₅B potential energy surface. Through isomer-selective photoion mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectroscopy (ms-TPES) the two isomers CH₃BCH₂ and CH₃CHBH were identified by their ms-TPE spectra and IE_ad values of 8.55 ± 0.02 eV and 8.73 ± 0.02 eV were determined, respectively. A second channel leading to the loss of ethene from TMB forms CH₂BH, which exhibits an IE_ad value of 9.37 ± 0.03 eV. The reaction mechanism in the literature needs to be expanded by an additional methane loss from the intermediately formed ethyl methyl borane.

Pure Rotational Spectroscopy of the CH2CN Radical Extended to the Sub-Millimeter Wave Spectral Region

We present a thorough pure rotational investigation of the CH₂CN radical in its ground vibrational state. Our measurements cover the millimeter and sub-millimeter wave spectral regions (79-860 GHz) using a W-band chirped-pulse instrument and a frequency multiplication chain-based spectrometer. The radical was produced in a flow cell at room temperature by H abstraction from acetonitrile using atomic fluorine. The newly recorded transitions of CH₂CN (involving N″ and K_a″ up to 42 and 8, respectively) were combined with the literature data, leading to a refinement of the spectroscopic parameters of the species using a Watson S-reduced Hamiltonian. In particular, the A rotational constant and K-dependent parameters are significantly better determined than in previous studies. The present model, which reproduces all experimental transitions to their experimental accuracy, allows for confident searches for the radical in cold to warm environments of the interstellar medium.

Ring-Opening Dynamics of the Cyclopropyl Radical and Cation: the Transition State Nature of the Cyclopropyl Cation

We provide compelling experimental and theoretical evidence for the transition state nature of the cyclopropyl cation. Synchrotron photoionization spectroscopy employing coincidence techniques together with a novel simulation based on high-accuracy ab initio calculations reveal that the cation is unstable via its allowed disrotatory ring-opening path. The ring strains of the cation and the radical are similar, but both ring opening paths for the radical are forbidden when the full electronic symmetries are considered. These findings are discussed in light of the early predictions by Longuet-Higgins alongside Woodward and Hoffman; we also propose a simple phase space explanation for the appearance of the cyclopropyl photoionization spectrum. The results of this work allow the refinement of the cyclopropane C-H bond dissociation energy, in addition to the cyclopropyl radical and cation cyclization energies, via the Active Thermochemical Tables approach.

Tunneling motion and splitting in the CH2OH radical: (Sub-)millimeter wave spectrum analysis

The (sub-)millimeter wave spectrum of the non-rigid CH2OH radical is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Ab initio calculations are carried out to quantitatively characterize its potential energy surface as a function of the two large amplitude ∠H1COH and ∠H2COH dihedral angles. It is shown that the radical displays a large amplitude torsional-like motion of its CH2 group with respect to the OH group. The rotation–torsion levels computed with the help of a 4D Hamiltonian accounting for this torsional-like motion and for the overall rotation exhibit a tunneling splitting, in agreement with recent experimental investigations, and a strong rotational dependence of this tunneling splitting on the rotational quantum number K a due to the rotation–torsion Coriolis coupling. Based on an internal axis method approach, a fitting Hamiltonian accounting for tunneling effects and for the fine and hyperfine structure is built and applied to the fitting of the new (sub)-millimeter wave transitions measured in this work along with previously available high-resolution data. 778 frequencies and wavenumbers are reproduced with a unitless standard deviation of 0.79 using 27 parameters. The N = 0 tunneling splitting, which could not be determined unambiguously in the previous high-resolution investigations, is determined based on its rotational dependence.

Accounting for molecular flexibility in photoionization: case of tert-butyl hydroperoxide

tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (tBuOOH) is a common intermediate in the oxidation of organic compounds that needs to be accurately quantified in complex gas mixtures for the development of chemical kinetic models of low temperature combustion. This work presents a combined theoretical and experimental investigation on the synchrotron-based VUV single photon ionization of gas-phase tBuOOH in the 9.0 - 11.0 eV energy range, including dissociative ionization processes. Computations consist of the determination of the structures, vibrational frequencies and the energetics of neutral and ionic tBuOOH. The Franck-Condon spectrum for the tBuOOH⁺ (X⁺) + e^- ← tBuOOH (X) + hν transition is computed, where special treatment is undertaken because of the flexibility of tBuOOH, in particular regarding the OOH group. Through comparison of the experimental mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectra with explicitly correlated coupled cluster calculations and Franck-Condon simulations that account for the flexibility of the molecule, an estimation of the ionization energy is given. The appearance energy of the only fragment observed within the above-mentioned energy range, identified as the tert-butyl C₄H₉⁺, is also reported. Finally, the signal branching ratio between the parent and the fragment ions is provided as a function of photon energy, essential to quantify tBuOOH in gas-phase oxidation/combustion experiments via advanced mass spectrometry techniques.

High-Resolution Double Velocity Map Imaging Photoelectron Photoion Coincidence Spectrometer for Gas-Phase Reaction Kinetics

We present a new photoelectron photoion coincidence (PEPICO) spectrometer that combines high mass resolution of cations with independently adjustable velocity map imaging of both cations and electrons. We photoionize atoms and molecules using fixed-frequency vacuum ultraviolet radiation. Mass-resolved photoelectron spectra associated with each cation's mass-to-charge ratio can be obtained by inversion of the photoelectron image. The mass-resolved photoelectron spectra enable kinetic time-resolved probing of chemical reactions with isomeric resolution using fixed-frequency radiation sources amenable to small laboratory settings. The instrument accommodates a variety of sample delivery sources to explore a broad range of physical chemistry. To demonstrate the time-resolved capabilities of the instrument, we study the 193 nm photodissociation of SO₂ via the C̃(¹B₂) ← X̃(¹A₁) transition. In addition to the well-documented O(³P_j) + SO(³Σ^-) channel, we observe direct evidence for a small yield of S(³P_j) + O₂(³Σ_g^-) as a primary photodissociation product channel, which may impact sulfur mass-independent fractionation chemistry.

Photoelectron spectroscopy in molecular physical chemistry

Photoelectron spectroscopy has long been a powerful method in the toolbox of experimental physical chemistry and molecular physics. Recent improvements in coincidence methods, charged-particle imaging, and electron energy resolution have greatly expanded the variety of environments in which photoelectron spectroscopy can be applied, as well as the range of questions that can now be addressed. In this Perspectives Article, we focus on selected recent studies that highlight these advances and research areas. The topics include reactive intermediates and new thermochemical data, high-resolution comparisons of experiment and theory using methods based on pulsed-field ionisation (PFI), and the application of photoelectron spectroscopy as an analytical tool to monitor chemical reactions in complex environments, like model flames, catalytic or high-temperature reactors.

Photoelectron Photoion Coincidence Spectroscopy of NCl3 and NCl2

We investigate NCl₃ and the NCl₂ radical by photoelectron‐photoion coincidence spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. The mass selected threshold photoelectron spectrum (ms‐TPES) of NCl₃ is broad and unstructured due to the large geometry change. An ionization energy of 9.7±0.1 eV is estimated from the spectrum and supported by computations. NCl₂ is generated by photolysis at 213 nm from NCl₃ and its ms‐TPES shows an extended vibrational progression with a 90 meV spacing that is assigned to the symmetric N−Cl stretching mode in the cation. An adiabatic ionization energy of 9.94 ± 0.02 eV is determined.

Threshold Photoelectron Spectroscopy of the CH2I, CHI, and CI Radicals

VUV photoionization of the CH_nI radicals (with n = 0, 1, and 2) is investigated by means of synchrotron radiation coupled with a double imaging photoion-photoelectron coincidence spectrometer. Photoionization efficiencies and threshold photoelectron spectra (TPES) for photon energies ranging between 9.2 and 12.0 eV are reported. An adiabatic ionization energy (AIE) of 8.334 ± 0.005 eV is obtained for CH₂I, which is in good agreement with previous results [8.333 ± 0.015 eV, Sztáray J. Chem. Phys. 2017, 147, 013944], while for CI an AIE of 8.374 ± 0.005 eV is measured for the first time and a value of ∼8.8 eV is estimated for CHI. Ab initio calculations have been carried out for the ground state of the CH₂I radical and for the ground state and excited states of the radical cation CH₂I⁺, including potential energy curves along the C-I coordinate. Franck-Condon factors are calculated for transitions from the CH₂I(X̃²B₁) ground state of the neutral radical to the ground state and excited states of the radical cation. The TPES measured for the CH₂I radical shows several structures that correspond to the photoionization into excited states of the radical cation and are fully assigned on the basis of the calculations. The TPES obtained for the CHI is characterized by a broad structure peaking at 9.335 eV, which could be due to the photoionization from both the singlet and the triplet states and into one or more electronic states of the cation. A vibrational progression is clearly observed in the TPES for the CI radical and a frequency for the C-I stretching mode of 760 ± 60 cm^-1 characterizing the CI⁺ electronic ground state has been extracted.

Conformer-dependent vacuum ultraviolet photodynamics and chiral asymmetries in pure enantiomers of gas phase proline

Proline is a unique amino-acid, with a secondary amine fixed within a pyrrolidine ring providing specific structural properties to proline-rich biopolymers. Gas-phase proline possesses four main H-bond stabilized conformers differing by the ring puckering and carboxylic acid orientation. The latter defines two classes of conformation, whose large ionization energy difference allows a unique conformer-class tagging via electron spectroscopy. Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is an intense chiroptical effect sensitive to molecular structures, hence theorized to be highly conformation-dependent. Here, we present experimental evidence of an intense and striking conformer-specific PECD, measured in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization of proline, as well as a conformer-dependent cation fragmentation behavior. This finding, combined with theoretical modeling, allows a refinement of the conformational landscape and energetic ordering, that proves inaccessible to current molecular electronic structure calculations. Additionally, astrochemical implications regarding a possible link of PECD to the origin of life's homochirality are considered in terms of plausible temperature constraints.

Threshold photoelectron spectroscopy of the HO2 radical

We report a synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet photoionization study of the hydroperoxyl radical (HO₂), a key reaction intermediate in combustion and atmospheric chemistry as well as astrochemistry, using double imaging photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy. The HO₂ radical is formed in a microwave discharge flow tube reactor through a set of reactions initiated by F atoms in a CH₄/O₂/He gas mixture. The high-resolution threshold photoelectron spectrum of HO₂ in the 11 eV-12 eV energy range is acquired without interferences from other species and assigned with the aid of theoretically calculated adiabatic ionization energies (AIEs) and Franck-Condon factors. The three vibrational modes of the radical cation HO₂ ⁺, the H-O stretch, the H-O-O bend, and the O-O stretch, have been identified, and their individual frequencies are measured. In addition, the AIEs of the X³A″ ground state and the a¹A' first excited electronic state of HO₂ ⁺ are experimentally determined at 11.359 ± 0.003 eV and 11.639 ± 0.005 eV, respectively, in agreement with high-level theoretically computed results. Furthermore, the former AIE value provides validation of thermochemical networks used to extract the enthalpy of formation of the HO₂ radical.

Photoionization of C4H5 Isomers

Single-photon, photoelectron-photoion coincidence spectroscopy is used to record the mass-selected ion spectra and slow photoelectron spectra of C₄H₅ radicals produced by the abstraction of hydrogen atoms from three C₄H₆ precursors by fluorine atoms generated by a microwave discharge. Three different C₄H₅ isomers are identified, with the relative abundances depending on the nature of the precursor (1-butyne, 1,2-butadiene, and 1,3-butadiene). The results are compared with our previous work using 2-butyne as a precursor [Hrodmarsson, H. R. J. Phys. Chem. A 2019, 123, 1521-1528]. The slow photoelectron spectra provide new information on the three radical isomers that is in good agreement with previous experimental and theoretical results [Lang, M. J. Phys. Chem. A 2015, 119, 3995-4000; Hansen, N. J. Phys. Chem. A 2006, 110, 3670-3678]. The energy scans of the C₄H₅ photoionization signal are recorded with substantially better resolution and signal-to-noise ratio than those in earlier work, allowing the observation of autoionizing resonances based on excited states of the C₄H₅ cation. Photoelectron images recorded at several energies are also reported, providing insight into the decay processes of these excited states. Finally, in contrast to the earlier work using 2-butyne as a precursor, where H-atom abstraction was the only observed process, F- and H-atom additions to the present precursors are also observed through the detection of C₄H₆F, C₄H₅F, and C₄H₇.

Online analysis of gas-phase radical reactions using vacuum ultraviolet lamp photoionization and time-of-flight mass spectrometry

A home-made vacuum ultraviolet photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer has been developed and coupled to an atmospheric simulation chamber operated at atmospheric pressure and to a fast flow tube at low pressure (1-10 Torr). Gas sampling from the simulation chamber is realized directly via a capillary effusive beam, and sampling from the flow tube is via a continuous molecular beam inlet. Both devices are connected simultaneously to the ionization chamber of the mass spectrometer and can be switched in-between within minutes to study gas-phase radical reactions of atmospheric interest in a large range of reaction conditions and reaction times (from milliseconds in the flow tube to hours in the simulation chamber). A cage-shaped photoionization source combined with a commercial 10.6 eV krypton lamp has been developed to provide a high ion collection efficiency along the long light path in the cage. This way, a multiplexed detection with high sensitivity down to the sub-parts per billion volume concentration range, e.g., a limit of detection of 0.3 ppbv with an accumulation time of 60 s for benzene and 1.3 ppbv for the methyl radical, is obtained. The performance and suitability of the setup are illustrated by the study of the chlorine-initiated oxidation reaction of toluene in the atmospheric simulation chamber and in the fast flow tube. Stable products and reactive intermediates have been well-determined and their reaction dynamics are discussed.

To see C2: Single-photon ionization of the dicarbon molecule

The C₂ carbon cluster is found in a large variety of environments including flames, electric discharges, and astrophysical media. Due to spin-selection rules, assessing a complete overview of the dense vibronic landscape of the C₂ ⁺ cation starting from the ground electronic state X Σg+1 of the neutral is not possible, especially since the C₂ ⁺ ground state is of X⁺ Σg-4 symmetry. In this work, a flow-tube reactor source is employed to generate the neutral C₂ in a mixture of both the lowest singlet X Σg+1 and triplet a ³Π_u electronic states. We have investigated the vibronic transitions in the vicinity of the first adiabatic ionization potential via one-photon ionization with vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation coupled with electron/ion double imaging techniques. Using ab initio calculations and Franck-Condon simulations, three electronic transitions are identified and their adiabatic ionization energy is determined E_i(a^{+  2}Π_u←X ¹Σ_g ⁺)=12.440(10) eV, E_i(X^{+  4}Σ_g ^-←a ³Π_u)=11.795(10) eV, and E_i(a⁺²Π_u ← a³Π_u) = 12.361(10) eV. From the three origin bands, the following energy differences are extracted: ΔE(a - X) = 0.079(10) eV and ΔE(a⁺ - X⁺) = 0.567(10) eV. The adiabatic ionization potential corresponding to the forbidden one-photon transition X⁺ ← X is derived and amounts to 11.873(10) eV, in very good agreement with the most recent measurement by Krechkivska et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 144, 144305 (2016)]. The enthalpy of formation of the doublet ground state C₂ ⁺ cation in the gas phase is determined at 0 K, Δ_fH⁰(0K)(C₂ ⁺(Πu2))=2019.9(10) kJ mol^-1. In addition, we report the first experimental ion yield of C₂ for which only a simple estimate was used up to now in the photochemistry models of astrophysical media due to the lack of experimental data.

Identifying isomers of peroxy radicals in the gas phase: 1-C3H7O2vs. 2-C3H7O2

The two isomers of propylperoxy radical 1-C₃H₇O₂ and 2-C₃H₇O₂, together with their rotamers, are individually identified and assigned.

VUV photoionization of the CH2NC radical: adiabatic ionization energy and cationic vibrational mode wavenumber determinations

The photoelectron spectroscopy of CH₂NC (isocyanomethyl) radical species is investigated for the first time between 9.3 and 11.2 eV in the vicinity of the first photoionizing transition X⁺¹A₁ ← X ²B₁.

Selective identification of cyclopentaring-fused PAHs and side-substituted PAHs in a low pressure premixed sooting flame by photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy

Selective on-line identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) formed in a low-pressure methane sooting flame, carried out using the double imaging Photoelectron Photoion Coincidence Spectroscopy method (i²PEPICO).

Threshold Photoelectron Spectroscopy of IO and HOI

Iodine oxides appear as reactive intermediates in atmospheric chemistry. Here, we investigate IO and HOI by mass-selective threshold photoelectron spectroscopy (ms-TPES), using synchrotron radiation. IO and HOI are generated by photolyzing iodine in the presence of ozone. For both molecules, accurate ionization energies are determined, 9.71±0.02 eV for IO and 9.79±0.02 eV for HOI. The strong spin-spin interaction in the ³ Σ^- ground state of IO⁺ leads to an energy splitting into the Ω=0 and Ω=±1 sublevels. Upon ionization, the I-O bond shortens significantly in both molecules; thus, a vibrational progression, assigned to the I-O stretch, is apparent in both spectra.

Origin band of the first photoionizing transition of hydrogen isocyanide

The photoelectron spectrum of the X1Σ+ → X+2Σ+ ionizing transition of hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) is measured for the first time at a fixed photon energy (13 eV). The assignment of the spectrum is supported by wave-packet calculations simulating the photoionization transition spectrum and using ab initio calculations of the potential energy surfaces for the three lowest electronic states of the cation. The photoelectron spectrum allows the retrieval of the fundamental of the CN stretching mode of the cationic ground state ([small nu, Greek, tilde]3 = 2260 ± 80 cm-1) and the adiabatic ionization energy of hydrogen isocyanide: IE(HNC) = 12.011 ± 0.010 eV, which is far below that of HCN (IE(HCN) = 13.607 eV). In light of this latter result, the thermodynamics of the HCN+/HNC+ isomers is discussed and a short summary of the values available in the literature is given.

The absolute photoionization cross section of the mercapto radical (SH) from threshold up to 15.0 eV

We present the absolute photoionization cross-section of the mercapto radical, SH, recorded from its first ionization energy at 10.4 eV up to a photon energy of 15 eV.

Photoionization studies of reactive intermediates using synchrotron radiation

Photoionization with synchrotron radiation enables sensitive and selective monitoring of reactive intermediates in environments such as flames and plasmas.

Diborene: Generation and Photoelectron Spectroscopy of an Inorganic Biradical

Diborenes, R-BB-R', are of current interest in inorganic chemistry because they offer the opportunity to tune the properties of a biradical by modifying the substituents of the diborene parent, HBBH. Here we synthesize the elusive diborene by H atom abstraction from diborane, B₂H₆, using fluorine atoms and report a vibrationally resolved photoelectron spectrum of the HBBH biradical. The spectrum is interpreted by comparison with high-level ab initio computations, taking into account the Renner-Teller splitting in the X^+ 2Π ionic ground state, which show an excellent agreement with the experimental spectrum. An adiabatic ionization energy of 9.080 ± 0.015 eV was determined, and a vibrational progression in the boron-boron stretching vibration of 0.14 eV is visible. This is due to the reduction of bond order upon ionization, accompanied by an increase of the computed boron-boron bond length, R_BB, from 1.514 to 1.606 Å.

Radical Thermometers, Thermochemistry, and Photoelectron Spectra: A Photoelectron Photoion Coincidence Spectroscopy Study of the Methyl Peroxy Radical

We investigated the simplest alkylperoxy radical, CH₃OO, formed by reacting photolytically generated CH₃ radicals with O₂, using the new combustion reactions followed by photoelectron photoion coincidence (CRF-PEPICO) apparatus at the Swiss Light Source. Modeling the experimental photoion mass-selected threshold photoelectron spectrum using Franck-Condon simulations including transitions to triplet and singlet cationic states yielded the adiabatic ionization energy of 10.265 ± 0.025 eV. Dissociative photoionization of CH₃OO generates the CH₃⁺ fragment ion at the appearance energy of 11.164 ± 0.010 eV. Combining these two values with Δ_fH_0K^°(CH₃) yields Δ_fH_0K^°(CH₃OO) = 22.06 ± 0.97 kJ mol^-1, reducing the uncertainty of the previously determined value by a factor of 5. Statistical simulation of the CH₃OO breakdown diagram provides a molecular thermometer of the free radical's internal temperature, which we measured to be 330 ± 30 K.

Valence shell threshold photoelectron spectroscopy of C3Hx (x = 0–3)

We present the photoelectron spectra of C₃H_x (x = 0–3) formed in a microwave discharge flow-tube reactor by consecutive H abstractions from C₃H₄ (C₃H_x + F → C₃H_x−1 + HF (x = 1–4)), but also from F + CH₄ schemes by secondary reactions.

Unveiling the Ionization Energy of the CN Radical

The cyano radical is a ubiquitous molecule and was, for instance, one of the first species detected in astrophysical media such as comets or diffuse clouds. In photodissociation regions, the reaction rate of CN⁺ + CO → CN + CO⁺ is one of the critical parameters defining nitrile chemistry. The enthalpy of this charge transfer reaction is defined as the difference of ionization energies (E_I) between CN and CO. Although E_I(CO) is known accurately, the E_I(CN) values are more dispersed and deduced indirectly from thermodynamic thresholds only, all above E_I(CO), leading to the assumption that the reaction is fast even at low temperature. Using a combination of synchrotron radiation, electron/ion imaging coincidence techniques, and supporting ab initio calculations, we directly determine the first adiabatic ionization energy of CN at 13.956(7) eV, and we demonstrate that E_I(CN) < E_I(CO). The findings suggest a very slow reaction in the cold regions of interstellar media.

An imaging photoelectron-photoion coincidence investigation of homochiral 2R,3R-butanediol clusters

We report an experimental investigation of homochiral cluster formation in seeded molecular beam expansions of (2R,3R)-butanediol. Synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet photoionization measurements have been performed using a double imaging electron-ion spectrometer in various configurations and modes of operation. These include measurements of the cluster ion mass spectra, wavelength scanned ion yields, and threshold electron spectra. Protonated cluster ions ranging up to n = 7 have been observed and size-selected photoelectron spectra and photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) have been recorded by velocity map imaging, recorded in coincidence with ions, at a number of fixed photon energies. Translation temperatures of the cluster ions have been further examined by ion imaging measurements. As well as the sequence of protonated clusters with integral numbers of butanediol monomer units, a second series with half-integral monomer masses is observed and deduced to result from a facile cleavage of a butanediol monomer moiety within the nascent cluster. This second sequence of half-integral masses displays quite distinct behaviours. PECD measurements are used to show that the half-integral mass cluster ions do not share a common parentage with whole integer masses. Using an analogy developed with simple theoretical calculations of butanediol dimer structures, it is inferred that the dissociative branching into integral and half-integral ion mass sequences is controlled by the presence of different butanediol monomer conformations within the hydrogen bonded clusters.

Communication: On the first ionization threshold of the C2H radical

The slow photoelectron spectrum of the ethynyl radical has been recorded for the first time by using the DESIRS beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron facility. Ethynyl was generated using a microwave discharge flow tube. The observation of the X⁺Π3←XΣ+2 transition allowed the first direct measurement of the adiabatic ionization threshold of this radical (E_I = 11.641(5) eV). The experimental results are supported by ab initio calculations. Our preliminary investigation of the cationic ground state potential energy surfaces predicts a non-negligible Renner-Teller effect which has not been discussed previously.

Pyrolysis of n-butane investigated using synchrotron threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy

Synchrotron TPEPICO and a flash pyrolysis micro-reactor were utilized to investigate thermal decomposition of n-butane and its reaction mechanisms were revealed.

Vacuum upgrade and enhanced performances of the double imaging electron/ion coincidence end-station at the vacuum ultraviolet beamline DESIRS

We report here the recent upgrade of the SAPHIRS permanent photoionization end-station at the DESIRS vacuum ultraviolet beamline of synchrotron SOLEIL, whose performances have been enhanced by installing an additional double-skimmer differential chamber. The smaller molecular beam profile obtained at the interaction region has increased the mass resolution of the double imaging photoelectron photoion coincidence (i(2)PEPICO) spectrometer, DELICIOUS III, installed in the photoionization chamber of the SAPHIRS endstation, by a factor of two, to M/ΔM ∼ 1700 (FWHM). The electron kinetic energy resolution offered by the velocity map imaging (VMI) part of the spectrometer has been improved down to 2.8% (ΔE/E) as we show on the N2 photoionization case in the double skimmer configuration. As a representative example of the overall state-of-the-art i(2)PEPICO performances, experimental results of the dissociation of state-selected O2(+)(B(2)∑(g)(-), v(+) = 0-6) molecular ions performed at the fixed photon energy of hν = 21.1 eV are presented.
