A novel model for smectic liquid crystals: Elastic anisotropy and response to a steady-state flow

Optimal Replica-Exchange Molecular Simulations in Combination with Evolution Strategies

We have incorporated Evolution Strategies into the Replica-Exchange Monte Carlo simulation method to predict the phase behavior of several example fluids. The replica-exchange method allows one system to exchange temperatures with its neighbors to search for the most stable structure relatively efficiently in a single simulation. However, if the temperature intervals of the replicas are not positioned carefully, there is an issue that local exchange does not occur. Our results for a simple Lennard-Jones fluid and the liquid-crystal Yukawa model demonstrate the utility of the approach when compared to conventional methods. When Evolution Strategies were applied to the Replica-Exchange Monte Carlo simulation, the problem of a significant localized decrease in exchange probability near the phase transition was avoided. By obtaining the optimal temperature intervals, the system efficiently traverses a broader parameter space with a small number of replicas. This is equivalent to accelerating molecular simulations with limited computational resources and can be useful when attempting to predict the phase behavior of complex systems.

Emergence and stabilization of transient twisted defect structures in confined achiral liquid crystals at a phase transition

Spontaneous emergence of chirality is a pervasive theme in soft matter. We report a transient twist forming in achiral nematic liquid crystals confined to a capillary tube with square cross section. At the smectic-nematic phase transition, intertwined disclination line pairs are observed with both helical and kinked lozenge-like contours, configurations that we promote through capillary cross-section geometry and stabilize using fluorescent amphiphilic molecules. The observed texture is similar to that found in "exotic" materials such as chromonics, but it is here observed in common thermotropic nematics upon heating from the smectic into the nematic phase. Numerical modeling further reveals that the disclinations may possess winding characters that are intermediate between wedge and twist, and that vary along the defect contours. In our experiments, we utilize a phase transition to generate otherwise elusive defect structures in common liquid crystal materials.

The Impact of Colloidal Surface-Anchoring on the Smectic A Phase

Liquid-crystalline phases are known for their unique properties, i.e., the combination of fluidity and long-range orientational and/or positional order. The presence of a colloidal particle gives rise to perturbations of this order locally. These perturbations are the origin of intercolloidal forces driving the colloidal self-assembly in a directed manner. Hence, the understanding of these perturbations is the first step in understanding and controlling the self-assembly process. Here, we perform Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the perturbations of orientational and positional order in a smectic A phase caused by a spherical colloid. We model the host phase via an interaction potential that reproduces characteristic features of phase behavior, structure, dynamics, and elasticity [S. Püschel-Schlotthauer et al. J. Chem. Phys. 2016, 145, 164903]. For strong homeotropic anchoring conditions, we find a Saturn ring defect and an onion structure in the smectic A phase; the latter has never been reported for colloids so far. For strong planar anchoring conditions, we find Boojum defects that become elongated at low temperature, similar to what is observed in experiments. However, for weak planar anchoring conditions, a double surface ring defect is exhibited in the smectic A phase.
