Local and global dynamics of multi-resolved polymer chains: Effects of the interactions atoms-beads on the dynamic of the chains

Slip-Spring Hybrid Particle-Field Molecular Dynamics for Coarse-Graining Branched Polymer Melts: Polystyrene Melts as an Example

The topology of chains significantly modifies the dynamical properties of polymer melts. Here, we extend a recently developed efficient simulation method, namely the slip-spring hybrid particle-field (SS-hPF) model, to study the structural and dynamical properties of branched polymer melts over large spatial-temporal scales. In the coarse-grained SS-hPF simulation of polymers, the bonded potentials are derived by iterative Boltzmann inversion from the underlying fine-grained model. The nonbonded potentials are computed from a density functional field instead of pairwise interactions used in standard molecular dynamics simulations, which increases the computational efficiency by a factor of 10-20. The entangled dynamics is lost due to the soft-core nature of density functional field interactions. It is recovered by a multichain slip-spring model that is rigorously parametrized from existing experimental or simulation data. To quantitatively predict the relaxation and diffusion of branched polymers, which are dominated by arm retraction rather than chain reptation, the slip-spring algorithm is augmented to improve the polymer dynamics near the branch point. Multiple dynamical observables, e.g., diffusion coefficients, arm relaxations, and tube survival probabilities, are characterized in an example coarse-grained model of symmetric and asymmetric star-shaped polystyrene melts. Consistent dynamical behaviors are identified and compared with theoretical predictions. With a single rescaling factor, the prediction of diffusion coefficients agrees well with the available experimental measurements. In this work, an efficient approach is provided to build chemistry-specific coarse-grained models for predicting the dynamics of branched polymers.

Development of hybrid coarse-grained atomistic models for rapid assessment of local structuring of polymeric semiconductors

Decades of work in the field of computational study of semiconducting polymers using atomistic models illustrate the challenges of generating equilibrated models for this class of materials. While adopting a coarse-grained model can be helpful, the process of developing a suitable model is particularly non-trivial and time-consuming for semiconducting polymers due to a large number of different interactions with some having an anisotropic nature. This work introduces a procedure for the rapid generation of a hybrid model for semiconducting polymers where atoms of secondary importance (those in the alkyl side chains) are transformed into coarse-grained beads to reduce the computational cost of generating an equilibrated structure. The parameters are determined from easy-to-equilibrate simulations of very short oligomers and the model is constructed to enable a very simple back-mapping procedure to reconstruct geometries with atomistic resolution. The model is illustrated for three related polymers containing DPP (diketopyrrolopyrrole) to evaluate the transferability of the potential across different families of polymers. The accuracy of the model, determined by comparison with the results of fully equilibrated simulations of the same material before and after back-mapping, is fully satisfactory for two out of the three cases considered. We noticed that accuracy can be determined very early in the workflow so that it is easy to assess when the deployment of this method is advantageous. The hybrid representation can be used to evaluate directly the electronic properties of structures sampled by the simulations.

Multi-resolution dimer models in heat baths with short-range and long-range interactions

This work investigates multi-resolution methodologies for simulating dimer models. The solvent particles which make up the heat bath interact with the monomers of the dimer either through direct collisions (short-range) or through harmonic springs (long-range). Two types of multi-resolution methodologies are considered in detail: (a) describing parts of the solvent far away from the dimer by a coarser approach; (b) describing each monomer of the dimer by using a model with different level of resolution. These methodologies are then used to investigate the effect of a shared heat bath versus two uncoupled heat baths, one for each monomer. Furthermore, the validity of the multi-resolution methods is discussed by comparison to dynamics of macroscopic Langevin equations.

Systematic derivation of hybrid coarse-grained models

Molecular dynamics represents a key enabling technology for applications ranging from biology to the development of new materials. However, many real-world applications remain inaccessible to fully resolved simulations due to their unsustainable computational costs and must therefore rely on semiempirical coarse-grained models. Significant efforts have been devoted in the last decade towards improving the predictivity of these coarse-grained models and providing a rigorous justification of their use, through a combination of theoretical studies and data-driven approaches. One of the most promising research efforts is the (re)discovery of the Mori-Zwanzig projection as a generic, yet systematic, theoretical tool for deriving coarse-grained models. Despite its clean mathematical formulation and generality, there are still many open questions about its applicability and assumptions. In this work, we propose a detailed derivation of a hybrid multiscale system, generalizing and further investigating the approach developed in Español [Europhys. Lett. 88, 40008 (2009)10.1209/0295-5075/88/40008]. Issues such as the general coexistence of atoms (fully resolved degrees of freedom) and beads (larger coarse-grained units), the role of the fine-to-coarse mapping chosen, and the approximation of effective potentials are discussed. The theoretical discussion is supported by numerical simulations of a monodimensional nonlinear periodic benchmark system with an open-source parallel Julia code, easily extensible to arbitrary potential models and fine-to-coarse mapping functions. The results presented highlight the importance of introducing, in the macroscopic model, nonconstant fluctuating and dissipative terms, given by the Mori-Zwanzig approach, to correctly reproduce the reference fine-grained results, without requiring ad hoc calibration of interaction potentials and thermostats.

Multi-resolution polymer Brownian dynamics with hydrodynamic interactions

A polymer model given in terms of beads, interacting through Hookean springs and hydrodynamic forces, is studied. A Brownian dynamics description of this bead-spring polymer model is extended to multiple resolutions. Using this multiscale approach, a modeller can efficiently look at different regions of the polymer in different spatial and temporal resolutions with scalings given for the number of beads, statistical segment length, and bead radius in order to maintain macro-scale properties of the polymer filament. The Boltzmann distribution of a Gaussian chain for differing statistical segment lengths gives a diffusive displacement equation for the multi-resolution model with a mobility tensor for different bead sizes. Using the pre-averaging approximation, the translational diffusion coefficient is obtained as a function of the inverse of a matrix and then in closed form in the long-chain limit. This is then confirmed with numerical experiments.
