Solvation of magnesium chloride dimer in water: The case of anionic and neutral clusters

The structures of magnesium chloride dimer-water clusters, (MgCl2)2(H2O)n-/0, were investigated with size-selected anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations to understand the dissolution of magnesium chloride in water. The most stable structures were confirmed by comparing vertical detachment energies (VDEs) with the experimental measurements. A dramatic drop of VDE at n = 3 has been observed in the experiment, which is in accordance with the structural change of (MgCl2)2(H2O)n-. Compared to the neutral clusters, the excess electron induces two significant phenomena in (MgCl2)2(H2O)n-. First, the planar D2h geometry can be converted into a C3v structure at n = 0, making the Mg-Cl bonds easier to be broken by water molecules. More importantly, a negative charge-transfer-to-solvent process occurs after adding three water molecules (i.e., at n = 3), which leads to an obvious deviation in the evolution of the clusters. Such electron transfer behavior was noticed at n = 1 in monomer MgCl2(H2O)n-, indicating that the dimerization between two MgCl2 molecules can make the cluster more capable of binding electron. In neutral (MgCl2)2(H2O)n, this dimerization provides more sites for the added water molecules, which can stabilize the entire cluster and maintain its initial structure. Specifically, filling the coordination number to be 6 for Mg atoms can be seen as a link between structural preferences in the dissolution of the monomers, dimers, and extended bulk-state of MgCl2. This work represents an important step forward into fully understanding the solvation of MgCl2 crystals and other multivalent salt oligomers.

Impacts of targeting different hydration free energy references on the development of ion potentials

Hydration free energy (HFE) as the most important solvation parameter is often targeted in ion model development, even though the reported values differ by dozens of kcal mol^-1 mainly due to the experimentally undetermined HFE of the proton ΔG°(H⁺). The choice of ΔG°(H⁺) obviously affects the hydration of single ions and the relative HFE between the ions with different (magnitude or sign) charges, and the impacts of targeted HFEs on the ion solvation and ion-ion interactions are largely unrevealed. Here we designed point charge models of K⁺, Mg²⁺, Al³⁺, and Cl^- ions targeting a variety of HFE references and then investigated the HFE influences on the simulations of dilute and concentrated ion solutions and of the salt ion pairs in gas, liquid, and solid phases. Targeting one more property of ion-water oxygen distances (IOD) leaves the ion-water binding distance invariant, while the binding strength increases with the decreasing (more negative) HFE of ions as a result of a decrease in ΔG°(H⁺) for the cation and an increase in ΔG°(H⁺) for the anion. The increase in ΔG°(H⁺) leads to strengthened cation-anion interactions and thus to close ion-ion contacts, low osmotic pressures, and small activity derivatives in concentrated ion solutions as well as too stable ion pairs of the salts in different phases. The ion diffusivity and water exchange rates around the ions are simply not HFE dependent but rather more complex. Targeting both the aqueous IOD and salt crystal properties of KCl was also attempted and the comparison between different models indicates the complexity and challenge in obtaining a balanced performance between different phases using classical force fields. Our results also support that a real ΔG°(H⁺) value of -259.8 kcal mol^-1 recommended by Hünenberger and Reif guides ion models to reproduce ion-water and ion-ion interactions reasonably at relatively low salt concentrations. Simulations of a metalloprotein show that a relatively more positive ΔG°(H⁺) for Mg²⁺ model is better for a reasonable description of the metal binding network.

Bridging atomistic simulations and thermodynamic hydration models of aqueous electrolyte solutions

Chemical thermodynamic models of solvent and solute activities predict the equilibrium behavior of aqueous solutions. However, these models are semi-empirical. They represent micro-scale ion and solvent behaviors controlling the macroscopic properties using small numbers of parameters whose values are obtained by fitting to activities and other partial derivatives of the Gibbs energy measured for the bulk solutions. We have conducted atomistic simulations of aqueous electrolyte solutions (MgCl₂ and CaCl₂) to determine the parameters of thermodynamic hydration models. We have implemented a cooperative hydration model to categorize the water molecules in electrolyte solutions into different subpopulations. The value of the electrolyte-specific parameter, k, was determined from the ion-affected subpopulation with the lowest absolute value of the free energy of removing the water molecule. The other equilibrium constant parameter, K₁, associated with the first degree of hydration, was computed from the free energy of hydration of hydrated clusters. The hydration number, h, was determined from a reorientation dynamic analysis of the water subpopulations compared to bulk-like behavior. The reparameterized models [R. H. Stokes and R. H. Robinson, J. Solution Chem. 2, 173 (1973) and Balomenos et al., Fluid Phase Equilib. 243, 29 (2006)] using the computed values of the parameters lead to the osmotic coefficients of MgCl₂ solutions that are consistent with measurements. Such an approach removes the dependence on the availability of experimental data and could lead to aqueous thermodynamic models capable of estimating the values of solute and solvent activities as well as thermal and volumetric properties for a wide range of compositions and concentrations.

Comparison of the Microsolvation of CaX2 (X = F, Cl, Br, I) in Water: Size-Selected Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Theoretical Calculations

To understand the microsolvation of alkaline-earth dihalides in water and provide information about the dependence of solvation processes on different halides, we investigated CaBr₂(H₂O)_n^-, CaI₂(H₂O)_n^-, and CaF₂(H₂O)_n^- (n = 0-6) clusters using size-selected anion photoelectron spectroscopy and conducted theoretical calculations on these clusters and their neutrals. The results are compared with those of CaCl₂(H₂O)_n^-/0 clusters reported previously. It is found that the vertical detachment energies (VDEs) of CaCl₂(H₂O)_n^-, CaBr₂(H₂O)_n^-, and CaI₂(H₂O)_n^- show a similar trend with increasing cluster size, while the VDEs of CaF₂(H₂O)_n^- show a different trend. The VDEs of CaF₂(H₂O)_n^- are much lower than those of CaCl₂(H₂O)_n^-, CaBr₂(H₂O)_n^-, and CaI₂(H₂O)_n^-. A detailed probing of the structures shows that a significant increase of the Ca-X distance (separation of Ca²⁺-X^- ion pair) in CaCl₂(H₂O)_n^-/0, CaBr₂(H₂O)_n^-/0, and CaI₂(H₂O)_n^-/0 clusters occurred at about n = 5. However, for CaF₂(H₂O)_n^-/0, no abrupt change of the Ca-F distance with the increasing cluster size has been observed. In CaCl₂(H₂O)₆^-/0, CaBr₂(H₂O)₆^-/0, and CaI₂(H₂O)₆^-/0, the Ca atom coordinates directly with 5 H₂O molecules. However, in CaF₂(H₂O)_n^-/0, the Ca atom coordinates directly with only 2 or 3 H₂O molecules. The similarity or differences in the structures and coordination numbers are consistent with the fact that CaCl₂, CaBr₂, and CaI₂ have similar solubility, while CaF₂ has much lower solubility.

Kirkwood-Buff-Derived Force Field for Peptides and Proteins: Philosophy and Development of KBFF20

A new classical nonpolarizable force field, KBFF20, for the simulation of peptides and proteins is presented. The force field relies heavily on the use of Kirkwood-Buff theory to provide a comparison of simulated and experimental Kirkwood-Buff integrals for solutes containing the functional groups common in proteins, thus ensuring intermolecular interactions that provide a good balance between the peptide-peptide, peptide-solvent, and solvent-solvent distributions observed in solution mixtures. In this way, it differs significantly from other biomolecular force fields. Further development and testing of the intermolecular potentials are presented here. Subsequently, rotational potentials for the ϕ/ψ and χ dihedral degrees of freedom are obtained by analysis of the Protein Data Bank, followed by small modifications to provide a reasonable balance between simulated and observed α and β percentages for small peptides. This, the first of two articles, describes in detail the philosophy and development behind KBFF20.

Characterization of a Bacillus megaterium strain with metal bioremediation potential and in silico discovery of novel cadmium binding motifs in the regulator, CadC

Bioremediation of toxic metal ions using bacterial strains is a promising tool. Metal binding motifs in microbial proteins are involved in the regulation and transport of such toxic metals for metal detoxification. A bacterial strain designated TWSL_4 with metal (Cu, Cd, and Pb) resistance and removal ability was isolated and identified as a Bacillus megaterium strain using 16S rRNA gene analysis. An operon with 2 open reading frames (ORFs) was identified, cloned, and sequenced. ORF1 and ORF2 were identical to the cadmium efflux system accessory protein (CadC) and cadmium-translocating P-type ATPases (CadA) of B. megaterium strain YC4-R4 respectively. A protein homology search using Swiss model retrieved no crystal structures for CadC and CadA of Bacillus sp.. CadC of TWSL_4 had a sequence identity of 53% to the CadC (121aa) protein and 51.69% to the CadC crystal structure (1U2W.1.B; GMQE=0.75) of Staphylococcus sp. pI258. Molecular dynamic simulation studies revealed the presence of three metal binding regions in CadC of TWSL_4, [ASP7-TYR9], [ASP100-HIS102], and [LYS113-ASP116]. This is the first report showing evidence for the presence of Cd²⁺ and Zn²⁺ metal binding motifs in the CadC regulator of the Bacillus megaterium cad operon. The bacterial strain TWSL_4 was also found to contain two different P type ATPases encoding genes, cadA and zosA involved in metal resistance. Furthermore, the metal bioremediation potential of strain TWSL_4 was confirmed using an industrial effluent. KEY POINTS: • Isolation of a metal-resistant bacterial strain with potential for industrial bioremediation. • Discovery of novel Cd binding sites in CadC of the cad operon from B. megaterium. • Involvement of aspartic acid in the coordination of metal ions (Cd²⁺).

Hydration processes of barium chloride: Size-selected anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations of BaCl2-water clusters

In order to understand the hydration processes of BaCl₂, we investigated BaCl₂(H₂O)_n ^- (n = 0-5) clusters using size-selected anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. The structures of neutral BaCl₂(H₂O)_n clusters up to n = 8 were also investigated by theoretical calculations. It is found that in BaCl₂(H₂O)_n ^-/0, the Ba-Cl distances increase very slowly with the cluster size. The hydration process is not able to induce the breaking of a Ba-Cl bond in the cluster size range (n = 0-8) studied in this work. In small BaCl₂(H₂O)_n clusters with n ≤ 5, the Ba atom has a coordination number of n + 2; however, in BaCl₂(H₂O)_6-8 clusters, the Ba atom coordinates with two Cl atoms and (n - 1) water molecules, and it has a coordination number of n + 1. Unlike the previously studied MgCl₂(H₂O)_n ^- and CaCl₂(H₂O)_n ^-, negative charge-transfer-to-solvent behavior has not been observed for BaCl₂(H₂O)_n ^-, and the excess electron of BaCl₂(H₂O)_n ^- is mainly localized on the Ba atom rather on the water molecules. No observation of Ba²⁺-Cl^- separation in current work is consistent with the lower solubility of BaCl₂ compared to MgCl₂ and CaCl₂. Considering the BaCl₂/H₂O mole ratio in the saturated solution, one would expect that about 20-30 H₂O molecules are needed to break the first Ba-Cl bond in BaCl₂.

Theory of electrolytes including steric, attractive, and hydration interactions

We present a continuum theory of electrolytes composed of a waterlike solvent and univalent ions. First, we start with a density functional F for the coarse-grained solvent, cation, and anion densities, including the Debye-Hückel free energy, the Coulombic interaction, and the direct interactions among these three components. These densities fluctuate obeying the distribution ∝exp(-F/k_BT). Eliminating the solvent density deviation in F, we obtain the effective non-Coulombic interactions among the ions, which consist of the direct ones and the solvent-mediated ones. We then derive general expressions for the ion correlation, the apparent partial volume, and the activity and osmotic coefficients up to linear order in the average salt density n_s. Second, we perform numerical analysis using the Mansoori-Carnahan-Starling-Leland model [J. Chem. Phys. 54, 1523 (1971)] for three-component hardspheres. The effective interactions sensitively depend on the cation and anion sizes due to competition between the steric and hydration effects, which are repulsive between small-large ion pairs and attractive between symmetric pairs. These agree with previous experiments and Collins' rule [Biophys. J. 72, 65 (1997)]. We also give simple approximate expressions for the ionic interaction coefficients valid for any ion sizes.

Ion and water transport reasonably involves rotation and pseudorotation: measurement and modeling the temperature dependence of small-angle neutron scattering from aqueous SrI2

X-ray and neutron scattering have provided insight into the short range (<8 Å) structures of ionic solutions for over a century. For longer distances, single scattering bands have, however, been seen. For the non-hydrolyzing salt SrI2 in aqueous (D2O) solution, a structure sufficient to scatter slow neutrons has been seen to persist down to a concentration of 0.1 mol L-1 where the measured average spacing between scatterers is over 20 Å. Theoretical studies of such long distance solution structures are difficult, and these difficulties are discussed. The width of the distribution in distances between the scatterers (ions, ion pairs, etc.) remains less than 10 Å, which approximates the average size of the ions and their first hydration shell. Here, we measure the temperature dependence from 10 °C to 90 °C of the small angle neutron scattering (SANS) by a 0.5 molar SrI2 solution in D2O and find that this surprisingly narrow distribution of the distances remains constant within experimental uncertainty. This structure of the ions in the solution appears to endure because changes in interion distances along any single spatial dimension require displacements near the size of a water molecule. Together, the experimental measurements support a rotatory mechanism for simultaneous ion transport and water countertransport. Since rotation minimizes displacement of the solution framework, it is suggested that water transport alone also involves rotation of multimolecular structures, and that the interpretation of single-molecule water rotation is confounded by pseudorotation that results from paired picosecond proton exchanges. It is pointed out that NMR-determined millisecond to microsecond proton exchange times of chelated-metal-ion bound waters and the much faster chelate rotational correlation times around 10 picoseconds, both of which require making and breaking of hydrogen bonds, are difficult to impossible to reconcile.

Nanometer-Scale Correlations in Aqueous Salt Solutions

The intermediate-range (1-4 nm) correlation of cations, anions, and water in aqueous alkaline earth salt solutions is measured using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We differentiate from the entire solution structure factor, S_X(Q), a separate region at low Q (<1.5 Å^-1) containing local diffraction maxima (prepeaks) that indicate nanometer-scale oscillatory behavior. These features are quantitatively reproduced with classical molecular dynamics simulations. At high concentrations, the prepeaks emerge from correlations arising from the existence of small quasi close-packed lattice-like structures comprised of cation hydration spheres. We also analyze the concentration dependence of the prepeak and discuss the overall results in light of the rich literature dealing with intermediate-range correlations underlying universal phenomena in concentrated electrolytes.

Thermodynamics of N-Isopropylacrylamide in Water: Insight from Experiments, Simulations, and Kirkwood-Buff Analysis Teamwork

The behavior of thermoresponsive polymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNiPAM), an essential building block in the design of smart soft materials, in aqueous solutions has attracted much interest, which contrasts with our knowledge of N-isopropylacrylamide (NiPAM) monomer. Strikingly, the physicochemical properties of aqueous NiPAM are similarly rich, and their understanding is far from being complete. This stems from the lack of accurate thermodynamic data and quantitative model for atomistic simulations. In this joint study, we have probed the thermodynamic behavior of aqueous NiPAM by experimental methods, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and Kirkwood-Buff (KB) analysis at ambient conditions. From the partial molar volumes and simultaneously correlated osmotic coefficients, with excess partial molar enthalpies of NiPAM in water, the concentration and temperature dependence of KB integrals was determined. For the purpose of this work, we have developed and employed a novel NiPAM force field, which not only reproduces KB integrals (G_ij) and adequately captures macroscopic thermodynamic quantities but also provides more accurate structural insight than the original force fields. We revealed in the vicinity of NiPAM the competing effect of amide hydration with interaction between nonpolar regions. This microscopic picture is reflected in the experimentally observed NiPAM-NiPAM association, which is present from highly dilute conditions up to the solubility limit and is evidenced by G₂₂. From intermediate concentrations, it is accompanied by the existence of apparent dense-water regions, as indicated by positive G₁₁ values. The here-employed KB-based framework provided a mutually consistent thermodynamic and microscopic insight into the NiPAM solution and may be further extended for ion-specific effects. Moreover, our findings contribute to the understanding of thermodynamic grounds behind PNiPAM collapse transition.

On the Solute-Induced Structure-Making/Breaking Effect: Rigorous Links among Microscopic Behavior, Solvation Properties, and Solution Non-Ideality

We studied the solute-induced perturbation of the solvent environment around a solute species from a microscopic viewpoint and propose a novel approach to the understanding of the structure-making/breaking process, regardless of the type and nature of the solute-solvent interactions. Based on the Kirkwood-Buff fluctuation formalism, we present a rigorous statistical mechanics description of the evolution of the solvent structure around the solute, analyze its response to small perturbations of the ( TP) state conditions and composition of the system, and make direct connections between a few equivalent micro- and macroscopic manifestations as probes for, and targets of, experimental measurements. We illustrate the analysis with theoretical results from integral equation calculations of model fluids and experimental evidence from available data for a variety of aqueous electrolyte and nonelectrolyte real fluid solutions. Finally, we provide a critical discussion about the inadequacy underlying a widely used de facto criterion for the classification of structure-making/breaking solutes.

Thermodynamic Analysis of n-Hexane-Ethanol Binary Mixtures Using the Kirkwood-Buff Theory

A complete thermodynamic analysis of mixtures consisting of molecules with complex chemical constitution can be rather demanding. The Kirkwood-Buff theory of solutions allows the estimation of thermodynamic properties, which cannot be directly extracted from atomistic simulations, such as the Gibbs energy of mixing (Δ_mix G). In this work, we perform molecular dynamics simulations of n-hexane-ethanol binary mixtures in the liquid state under two temperature-pressure conditions and at various mole fractions. On the basis of the recently published methodology of Galata [ Fluid Phase Equilib. 2018 , 470 , 25 - 37 ] , we first calculate the Kirkwood-Buff integrals in the isothermal-isobaric ( NpT) ensemble, identifying how system size affects their estimation. We then extract the activity coefficients, excess Gibbs energy, excess enthalpy, and excess entropy for the n-hexane-ethanol binary mixtures we simulate. We employ two approaches for quantifying composition fluctuations: one based on counting molecular centers of mass and a second one based on counting molecular segments. Results from the two approaches are practically indistinguishable. We compare our results against predictions of vapor-liquid equilibria obtained in a previous simulation work using the same force field, as well as with experimental data, and find very good agreement. In addition, we develop a simple methodology to identify the hydrogen bonds between ethanol molecules and analyze their effects on mixing properties.
