High-performance small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) experiments on a multi-functional laboratory goniometer platform with easily exchangeable X-ray modules

Frontal polymerization-triggered simultaneous ring-opening metathesis polymerization and cross metathesis affords anisotropic macroporous dicyclopentadiene cellulose nanocrystal foam

Multifunctionality and effectiveness of macroporous solid foams in extreme environments have captivated the attention of both academia and industries. The most recent rapid, energy-efficient strategy to manufacture solid foams with directionality is the frontal polymerization (FP) of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD). However, there still remains the need for a time efficient one-pot approach to induce anisotropic macroporosity in DCPD foams. Here we show a rapid production of cellular solids by frontally polymerizing a mixture of DCPD monomer and allyl-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals (ACs). Our results demonstrate a clear correlation between increasing % allylation and AC wt%, and the formed pore architectures. Especially, we show enhanced front velocity (v_f) and reduced reaction initiation time (t_init) by introducing an optimal amount of 2 wt% AC. Conclusively, the small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS, WAXS) analyses reveal that the incorporation of 2 wt% AC affects the crystal structure of FP-mediated DCPD/AC foams and enhances their oxidation resistance.

Mesostructural study on graphenic-based carbon prepared from coconut shells by heat treatment and liquid exfoliation

In this study, the effect of heating temperature on the structure of graphenic-based carbon (GC) has been successfully investigated. A series of GC materials was prepared from coconut shells by a green synthesis method. The process includes heating at four temperatures (T = 400, 600, 800 and 1000 °C) followed by an exfoliation process assisted by hydrochloric acid (HCl). These materials were characterized by wide- and small-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The WAXS analysis shows Braggs peaks corresponding to the reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-like phase. Investigations by FTIR and XPS methods show the presence of carbon-oxygen functional groups such as C=C (carbon with sp² hybridization), C–C (carbon with sp³ hybridization), and C=O bonds. The sp² bonds form a 2-dimensional (2D) network in hexagonal lattice, while carbon with sp³ bonds tends to form a 3-dimensional (3D) tetrahedral structure. The BET analysis revealed meso- and micro-pore structures in GC. Heating process reduces the specific surface area and increases pore size of GC. Moreover, increasing the heating temperature induces a decrease in radius of gyration (R_g) and an increase in the formation of 2D structures in GC. The fitting results of SAXS profiles, proved by TEM and XPS, yielded the structure of GC containing the mixture of 2D and 3D structures. Thus, it is suggested that the GC has a mesostructure.

Polymer Adsorbents vs. Functionalized Oxides and Carbons: Particulate Morphology and Textural and SurfaceCharacteristics

Various methods for morphological, textural, and structural characterization of polymeric, carbon, and oxide adsorbents have been developed and well described. However, there are ways to improve the quantitative information extraction from experimental data for describing complex sorbents and polymer fillers. This could be based not only on probe adsorption and electron microscopies (TEM, SEM) but also on small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), cryoporometry, relaxometry, thermoporometry, quasi-elastic light scattering, Raman and infrared spectroscopies, and other methods. To effectively extract information on complex materials, it is important to use appropriate methods to treat the data with adequate physicomathematical models that accurately describe the dependences of these data on pressure, concentration, temperature, and other parameters, and effective computational programs. It is shown that maximum accurate characterization of complex materials is possible if several complemented methods are used in parallel, e.g., adsorption and SAXS with self-consistent regularization procedures (giving pore size (PSD), pore wall thickness (PWTD) or chord length (CLD), and particle size (PaSD) distribution functions, the specific surface area of open and closed pores, etc.), TEM/SEM images with quantitative treatments (giving the PaSD, PSD, and PWTD functions), as well as cryo- and thermoporometry, relaxometry, X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopies (giving information on the behavior of the materials under different conditions).

Highly versatile laboratory X-ray scattering instrument enabling (nano-)material structure analysis on multiple length scales by covering a scattering vector range of almost five decades

A compact laboratory X-ray scattering platform that uniquely enables for high-performance ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS), small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), and total scattering (atomic pair distribution function analysis; PDF) experiments was developed. It covers Bragg spacings from sub-Angstroms to 1.7 μm, thus allowing the analysis of dimensions and complex structures in (nano-)materials on multiple length scales. The accessible scattering vector q-range spans over almost five decades (q_min = 0.0036 nm^-1, q_max = 215 nm^-1), without any gaps. Whereas SAXS is suitable to characterize materials on a length scale of 1-100 nm, with USAXS, this range can be significantly extended to the micrometer range. On the other end, from WAXS and particularly from PDF measurements, information about the local atomic order and disorder can be obtained. The high performance, exceptional versatility, and ease-of-use of the instrument are enabled by a high-resolution 2-circle goniometer with kinematic mounts, a modular concept based on prealigned, quickly interchangeable X-ray components, and advanced detector technology. For USAXS measurements, a modified Bonse-Hart experimental setup with single crystal collimator and analyzer optics is used. SAXS/WAXS measurements are enabled by focusing optics, an evacuated beam path, and a 2D detector. For total scattering experiments, a high-energy X-ray source is used in combination with a hybrid pixel array detector that is based on a CdTe sensor for the highest counting efficiency. To ensure high resolution and sensitivity in these various applications, special care is taken to suppress any type of background scattering signal. The high resolution that can be achieved with the USAXS collimation system is demonstrated on a set of monodisperse, colloidal silica dispersions and derived colloidal crystals, with particle diameters in the range of hundreds of nanometers up to 1.6 µm. USAXS and SAXS results are shown to be consistent with those obtained by static light scattering (SLS) and dynamic light scattering. It is demonstrated that the obtainable USAXS data bridge the gap in q between SAXS and SLS. The capabilities of the instrument to acquire high-quality total scattering data for PDF analysis are demonstrated on amorphous SiO₂ nanoparticles as well as on NaYF₄ upconversion nanocrystals. To the best of our knowledge, it is for the first time that we present a single laboratory instrument that enables measurements of high-quality X-ray scattering data within such a wide q-range, by combining four complementary elastic X-ray scattering techniques. The modular design concept of the instrument allows for incremental improvements as well as to add more applications in the future.
