Relative density and isobaric expansivity of cold and supercooled heavy water from 254 to 298 K and up to 100 MPa

Isotope effects in supercooled H2O and D2O and a corresponding-states-like rescaling of the temperature and pressure

Water shows anomalous properties that are enhanced upon supercooling. The unusual behavior is observed in both H2O and D2O, however, with different temperature dependences for the two isotopes. It is often noted that comparing the properties of the isotopes at two different temperatures (i.e., a temperature shift) approximately accounts for many of the observations-with a temperature shift of 7.2 K in the temperature of maximum density being the most well-known example. However, the physical justification for such a shift is unclear. Motivated by recent work demonstrating a "corresponding-states-like" rescaling for water properties in three classical water models that all exhibit a liquid-liquid transition and critical point [Uralcan et al., J. Chem. Phys. 150, 064503 (2019)], the applicability of this approach for reconciling the differences in the temperature- and pressure-dependent thermodynamic properties of H2O and D2O is investigated here. Utilizing previously published data and equations-of-state for H2O and D2O, we show that the available data and models for these isotopes are consistent with such a low temperature correspondence. These observations provide support for the hypothesis that a liquid-liquid critical point, which is predicted to occur at low temperatures and high pressures, is the origin of many of water's anomalies.

Dual-capillary dilatometer for density measurements of supercooled water

An apparatus tailored to accurate density measurements of supercooled water, i.e. liquid water in a metastable state below the freezing point temperature, was recently developed at the Institute of Thermomechanics of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The apparatus, dual-capillary dilatometer, is described, together with the measurement procedure and the evaluation methodology. The primary result of the dual-capillary method are relative densities with respect to the density at a reference temperature and given pressure. In order to calculate absolute densities, densities at the reference temperature as a function of pressure are needed. For calculation of such pressure dependence of density, so called thermodynamic integration involving literature thermodynamic data and our experimental results is used. The dual-capillary dilatometer was successfully employed in density measurements of ordinary water, heavy water and seawater. The data in the temperature range from 238.15 to 303.15 K at pressures from atmospheric up to 200 MPa are presented and compared with respective IAPWS formulations of thermodynamic properties. The data for ordinary water are also compared with an accurate equation of state for supercooled water of Holten et al. (2014) revealing good mutual agreement. The expanded uncertainty of relative densities acquired by means of the dual-capillary method is estimated to be lower than 50 ppm.

Heavy Water Models for Classical Molecular Dynamics: Effective Inclusion of Nuclear Quantum Effects

Small differences in physical and chemical properties of H₂O and D₂O, such as melting and boiling points or pK_a, can be traced back to a slightly stronger hydrogen bonding in heavy versus normal water. In particular, deuteration reduces zero-point vibrational energies as a demonstration of nuclear quantum effects. In principle, computationally demanding quantum molecular dynamics is required to model such effects. However, as already demonstrated by Feynmann and Hibbs, zero-point vibrations can be effectively accounted for by modifying the interaction potential within classical dynamics. In the spirit of the Feymann-Hibbs approach, we develop here two water models for classical molecular dynamics by fitting experimental differences between H₂O and D₂O. We show that a three-site SPCE-based model accurately reproduces differences between properties of the two water isotopes, with a four-site TIP4P-2005/based model in addition capturing also the absolute values of key properties of heavy water. The present models are computationally simple enough to allow for extensive simulations of biomolecules in heavy water relevant, for example, for experimental techniques such as NMR or neutron scattering.

Long-Range Orientational Organization of Dipolar and Steric Liquids

Long-range orientational correlations in liquids have received recent renewed interest, in particular for the neat water case. These long-range orientational correlations, exceeding several tens of nanometers, originate from the presence of the strong permanent water dipolar moment. However, the exact dependence with the dipolar moment and the role of other local forces like steric hindrance has never been addressed. In this work, we experimentally measure long-range correlations for a set of liquids differing by their molecular weight and dipolar moment, in order to reveal the origin of their long-range organization. Hence, we show that the dipolar moment of a solvent molecule is not the unique feature determining the orientational correlation. Steric hindrance significantly helps to structure the liquids as well. In order to quantify these long-range correlations, we also derive theoretically the polarization resolved second harmonic scattering intensity as a function of the rotational invariants describing the dipolar and octupolar interaction.

Possible Anomaly in the Surface Tension of Supercooled Water: New Experiments at Extreme Supercooling down to -31.4 °C

The surface tension of water is suspected to show a substantial increase at low temperatures, which is considered to be one of the many anomalies of water. The second inflection point (SIP) anomaly, originally claimed to be at around -8 °C, was experimentally refuted down to -25 °C by Hrubý et al. (J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2014, 5, 425-428). Recent molecular simulations predict the SIP anomaly near or even below the homogeneous freezing limit of around -38 °C. To contribute to an ongoing discussion about the SIP anomaly, new experiments focused on extreme levels of supercooling were carried out in this study. Unique experimental data down to -31.4 °C were collected using two measuring techniques based on the capillary rise method. A significant deviation from the extrapolated IAPWS formulation R1-76(2014) for surface tension of ordinary water was detected below -20 °C. Contrary to previous data, new experiments provide room for an anomaly in the course of surface tension in the deeply supercooled region.
