ReaxFF reactive force field for molecular dynamics simulations of liquid Cu and Zr metals

The formation mechanism of Sc-based metallofullerenes: a molecular dynamics simulation study

The practical applications of endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) are mainly constrained by their low yields. Understanding the formation mechanisms is therefore crucial for developing methods for high-yield and selective synthesis. To address this, a novel force-field parameter set, "CSc.ff", was created using a single-parameter search optimization method, then molecular dynamics simulations of various systems with a carbon-to-scandium atomic ratio of 12.5 were carried out. The simulations were run under a constant atomic number, volume, and energy (NVE) ensemble. The influence of the working gas, helium, as well as temperature gradients on the formation process was examined. Our simulations reveal that the cage growth patterns of Sc-based EMFs (Sc-EMFs) closely resemble those of hollow fullerenes, evolving from free carbon atoms to chains, rings, and, ultimately, to cage-shaped clusters. Importantly, the Sc-EMFs formed in the simulation frequently exhibit structural defects or under-coordinated carbon atoms. Scandium atoms, whether at the periphery or on the surface of these cages, can be incorporated into the cages, forming Sc-EMFs. Helium was found to not only promote the formation of carbon cages but also facilitate the encapsulation of scandium atoms, playing a crucial role in the formation of cluster fullerenes. Moreover, cooling effectively inhibits the uncontrollable growth of the carbon cage and is essential for forming stable, appropriate-sized cages. This study enhances our understanding of the formation of Sc-EMFs and provides valuable insights for developing more efficient synthetic methods.

Machine learning interatomic potentials for aluminium: application to solidification phenomena

In studying solidification process by simulations on the atomic scale, the modeling of crystal nucleation or amorphization requires the construction of interatomic interactions that are able to reproduce the properties of both the solid and the liquid states. Taking into account rare nucleation events or structural relaxation under deep undercooling conditions requires much larger length scales and longer time scales than those achievable byab initiomolecular dynamics (AIMD). This problem is addressed by means of classical molecular dynamics simulations using a well established high dimensional neural network potential trained on a set of configurations generated by AIMD relevant for solidification phenomena. Our dataset contains various crystalline structures and liquid states at different pressures, including their time fluctuations in a wide range of temperatures. Applied to elemental aluminium, the resulting potential is shown to be efficient to reproduce the basic structural, dynamics and thermodynamic quantities in the liquid and undercooled states. Early stages of crystallization are further investigated on a much larger scale with one million atoms, allowing us to unravel features of the homogeneous nucleation mechanisms in the fcc phase at ambient pressure as well as in the bcc phase at high pressure with unprecedented accuracy close to theab initioone. In both cases, a single step nucleation process is observed.

On the Mechanical Properties of Popgraphene-Based Nanotubes: a Reactive Molecular Dynamics Study

Carbon-based tubular materials have sparked a great interest in future electronics and optoelectronics device applications. In this work, we computationally studied the mechanical properties of nanotubes generated from popgraphene (PopNTs). Popgraphene is a 2D carbon allotrope composed of 5-8-5 rings. We carried out fully atomistic reactive (ReaxFF) molecular dynamics for PopNTs of different chiralities ( n , 0 and 0 , n ) and/or diameters and at different temperatures (from 300 up to 1200 K). Results showed that the tubes are thermally stable (at least up to 1200 K). All tubes presented stress/strain curves with a quasi-linear behavior followed by an abrupt drop of stress values. Interestingly, armchair-like PopNTs ( 0 , n ) can stand a higher strain load before fracturing when contrasted to the zigzag-like ones ( n , 0 ). Moreover, it was obtained that Young's modulus (Y_Mod ) (750-900 GPa) and ultimate strength (σ_US ) (120-150 GPa) values are similar to the ones reported for conventional armchair and zigzag carbon nanotubes. Y_Mod values obtained for PopNTs are not significantly temperature-dependent. While the σ_US values for the 0 , n showed a quasi-linear dependence with the temperature, the n , 0 exhibited no clear trends.

The mechanism of hydrogen-accelerated melting of polycrystalline copper

We investigate the melting process of polycrystalline copper doped with hydrogen atoms by using the newly developed Cu/H ReaxFF force field. Hydrogen atoms are found to effectively promote the melting of copper, and even make it happen at temperatures below the equilibrium melting temperature of copper during rapid heating. The enhanced melting is closely relevant to the interaction of hydrogen atoms with the grain boundary. We find that host Cu atoms perform cooperative vibration around the grain boundaries as the precursor of premelting. The doping of hydrogen atoms is shown to drive the vibration more violent so that the grain boundary becomes broader and the premelting is prematurely triggered. Meanwhile, hydrogen atoms segregated in grain boundaries massively diffuse into the bulk region with increasing temperature, resulting in intensification of lattice distortion of the bulk phase. This facilitates the rapid advancement of the liquid-solid interface during melting in contrast to the slow and discontinuous interface advancement in hydrogen-free polycrystalline copper. Our results suggest that even a small amount of hydrogen atoms is expected to significantly affect the thermodynamic properties of metals with the existence of structural defects.

ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations of electrolyte-water systems at supercritical temperature

We have performed ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations of alkali metal-chlorine pairs in different water densities at supercritical temperature (700 K) to elucidate the structural and dynamical properties of the system. The radial distribution function and the angular distribution function explain the inter-ionic structural and orientational arrangements of atoms during the simulation. The coordination number of water molecules in the solvation shell of ions increases with an increase in the radius of ions. We find that the self-diffusion coefficient of metal ions increases with a decrease in density under supercritical conditions due to the formation of voids within the system. The hydrogen bond dynamics has been interpreted by the residence time distribution of various ions, which shows Li⁺ having the highest water retaining capability. The void distribution within the system has been analyzed by using the Voronoi polyhedra algorithm providing an estimation of void formation within the system at high temperatures. We observe the formation of salt clusters of Na⁺ and K⁺ at low densities due to the loss of dielectric constants of ions. The diffusion of ions gets altered dramatically due to the formation of voids and nucleation of ions in the system.
