Functionalized carbon nanocones performance in water harvesting

In this work, we investigate the water capture process for functionalized carbon nanocones (CNCs) through molecular dynamic simulations in the following three scenarios: a single CNC in contact with a reservoir containing liquid water, a single CNC in contact with a water vapor reservoir, and a combination of more than one CNC in contact with vapor. We found that water flows through the nanocones when in contact with the liquid reservoir if the nanocone tip presents hydrophilic functionalization. In contact with steam, we observed the formation of droplets at the base of the nanocone only when hydrophilic functionalization is present. Then, water flows through in a linear manner, a process that is more efficient than that in the liquid reservoir regime. The scalability of the process is tested by analyzing the water flow through more than one nanocone. The results suggest that the distance between the nanocones is a fundamental ingredient for the efficiency of water harvesting.

Nanoscale Pore-Pore Coupling Effect on Ion Transport through Ordered Porous Monolayers

Distinct from the conventional view that nanopores are considered independent channels for mass transport, recent study on the covalent organic framework (COF)-based monolayers characteristic of an ordered nanopore array exhibits a series of interesting properties originating from the strong interactions between adjacent pores. These interactions are determined to be highly dependent on interpore distance and pose a significant influence on the ion transport, accounting for the exceptional membrane performance including both selectivity and conductance. In this Perspective, we discuss the recently discovered nanoscale pore-pore coupling as well as the exciting features of porous nanostructures. We also look at the challenges and future opportunities of ion transport in ordered porous monolayers in the aspects of both fundamental research and practical use.

Conditions for electroneutrality breakdown in nanopores

It has recently been suggested that a breakdown of electroneutrality occurs in highly confined nanopores that are encompassed by a dielectric material. This work elucidates the conditions for this breakdown. We show that the breakdown within the pore results from the response of the electric field within the dielectric. Namely, we show that this response is highly sensitive to the boundary condition at the dielectric edge. The standard Neumann boundary condition of no-flux predicts that the breakdown does not occur. However, a Dirichlet boundary condition for a zero-potential predicts a breakdown. Within this latter scenario, the breakdown exhibits a dependence on the thickness of the dielectric material. Specifically, infinite thickness dielectrics do not exhibit a breakdown, while dielectrics of finite thickness do exhibit a breakdown. Numerical simulations confirm theoretical predictions. The breakdown outcomes are discussed with regard to single pore systems and multiple pore systems.
