How accurate is the determination of equilibrium structures for van der Waals complexes? The dimer N2O⋯CO as an example

A New Ab Initio Potential Energy Surface and Rovibrational Spectra for the CO-N2O Complex

We constructed a new ab initio potential energy surface (PES) for CO-N2O which includes the intramolecular Q3 normal coordinate for the N2O ν3 antisymmetric stretching vibration. The intermolecular potential was evaluated employing the supermolecular method at the [CCSD(T)]-F12a level, with the aug-cc-pVTZ basis set plus bond functions. By integral over the intramolecular Q3 coordinate, we obtained the vibrationally averaged PESs for the CO-N2O system in the ground and ν3 excited states of N2O. Each PES features one nearly T-shaped global minimum and one skewed T-shaped local minimum. Based on these obtained PESs of CO-N2O, the radial discrete variable representation/angle finite base representation method and the Lanczos algorithm were applied for the calculations of bound states and rovibrational energy levels. The calculated ν3 vibrational band origin shift of the N2O monomer in CO-N2O is 2.7570 cm-1, matching well with the observed value of 2.9048 cm-1. The computed microwave and infrared transition frequencies, as well as the rotational parameters, are consistent with the experimental observations.

Water binding to the atmospheric oxidation product methyl vinyl ketone

Methyl vinyl ketone is one of the major oxidation products of isoprene, and therefore, an important precursor of secondary organic aerosol. Understanding its interactions with water is relevant to gain insight into aerosol formation and improve the predictive power of atmospheric chemistry models. The molecular complex formed between methyl vinyl ketone and water has been generated in a supersonic jet and characterized using high-resolution microwave spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemistry calculations. In this study, we show that methyl vinyl ketone interacts with water forming four 1:1 isomers connected by O - H···O and C - H···O hydrogen bond interactions. Water has been found to preferentially bind to the antiperiplanar conformation of methyl vinyl ketone. Evidence of a large amplitude motion arising from the methyl internal rotation has been found in the rotational spectra of the dimer. The threefold methyl internal rotation barrier heights have been further determined and discussed for all the species.

Stacked but not Stuck: Unveiling the Role of π→π* Interactions with the Help of the Benzofuran-Formaldehyde Complex

The 1:1 benzofuran–formaldehyde complex has been chosen as model system for analyzing π→π* interactions in supramolecular organizations involving heteroaromatic rings and carbonyl groups. A joint “rotational spectroscopy–quantum chemistry” strategy unveiled the dominant role of π→π* interactions in tuning the intermolecular interactions of such adduct. The exploration of the intermolecular potential energy surface led to the identification of 14 low‐energy minima, with 4 stacked isomers being more stable than those linked by hydrogen bond or lone‐pair→π interactions. All energy minima are separated by loose transition states, thus suggesting an effective relaxation to the global minimum under the experimental conditions. This expectation has been confirmed by the experimental detection of only one species, which was unambiguously assigned owing to the computation of accurate spectroscopic parameters and the characterization of 11 isotopologues. The large number of isotopic species opened the way to the determination of the first semi‐experimental equilibrium structure for a molecular complex of such a dimension.
